It belongs to type II of the structural family of M(I)Ln(III)(PO(3))(4) compounds (M(I) = alkali metal and Ln(III) = rare earth metal) and is composed of (∞)(PO(3))(n)](n-) polyphosphate chains with a repeating unit of four PO(4) tetra-hedra. The chains extend parallel to [100] and share O atoms with irregular SmO(8) polyhedra, forming a three-dimensional framework which delimits tunnels occupied by Na(+) cations in a distorted octa-hedral environment.

Project description:The title compound, K(2)Sm(MoO(4))(PO(4)), has been prepared under atmospheric conditions using a high temperature solution growth (HTSG) method. The structure of K(2)Sm(MoO(4))(PO(4)) is isotypic with other A(2)M(MoO(4))(PO(4)) compounds, where A = Na or K, and M = trivalent rare earth cation. It can be described as being built up from two-dimensional anionic layers with composition [Sm(MoO(4))(PO(4))](2-) that are stacked along the c axis and are inter-connected by K(+) cations which are in an eightfold coordination by O atoms. The SmO(8), MoO(4) and PO(4) polyhedra exhibit 2 symmetry.

Reduced inositol polyphosphate accumulation and inositol supply induced by lithium in stimulated cerebral cortex slices.

Project description:The ability of lithium to interfere with phosphoinositide metabolism in rat cerebral cortex slices has been examined by monitoring the accumulation of CMP-phosphatidate (CMP-PtdOH) and the reduction in Ins(1,4,5)P3 and Ins(1,3,4,5)P4 levels. A small accumulation of [14C]CMP-PtdOH was seen in slices prelabelled with [14C]cytidine and stimulated with carbachol (1 mM) or Li+ (1 mM). However, simultaneous addition of both agents for 30 min produced a 22-fold accumulation, with Li+ producing a half-maximal effect at a concentration of 0.61 +/- 0.19 mM. Kinetic studies revealed that the effects of carbachol and Li+ on CMP-PtdOH accumulation occurred with no initial lag apparent under these conditions and that preincubation with myo-inositol (10 or 30 mM) dramatically attenuated CMP-PtdOH accumulation. myo-Inositol could also attenuate the rate of accumulation of CMP-PtdOH when added 20 min after carbachol and Li+; these effects were not observed when equimolar concentrations of scyllo-inositol were added. Use of specific radioreceptor assays allowed the mass accumulations of Ins(1,4,5)P3 and Ins(1,3,4,5)P4 to be monitored. Following a lag of 5-10 min, Li+ resulted in a marked reduction in the accumulation of both inositol polyphosphates resulting from muscarinic-cholinergic stimulation. Preincubation of cerebral cortex slices with myo- (but not scyllo-) inositol delayed, but did not prevent, the reduction in the accumulation of Ins(1,4,5)P3 or Ins(1,3,4,5)P4. The results suggest that cerebral cortex, at least in vitro, is very sensitive to myo-inositol depletion under conditions of muscarinic receptor stimulation. The relationship of such depletion to the generation of inositol polyphosphate second messengers is discussed.

In Situ Li<sub>3</sub>PO<sub>4</sub>/PVA Solid Polymer Electrolyte Protective Layer Stabilizes the Lithium Metal Anode.

Project description:A lithium metal anode is regarded as the most promising anode material for the next generation of high-energy density batteries because of its high specific capacity and low reduction potential. However, dendritic deposition and severe side reactions in continuous Li plating/stripping inevitably hinder the practical application of Li metal batteries. A solid polymer electrolyte protective layer with synergistic Li3PO4/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) features is in situ constructed on a lithium metal anode to obtain a stable interface during charge/discharge cycles. The protective layer can adapt to volume changes and inhibit lithium dendrites. The in situ reaction guaranteed the uniformity of ion transport and a tight interface between the protective layer and the lithium metal, so that the lithium deposition behavior was effectively regulated. The PP-Li anode presented a stable Li plating/stripping for 1000 h in a symmetrical cell system and exhibited an enhanced performance of the lithium titanium oxide cell. The in situ Li3PO4/PVA solid polymer electrolyte protective layer provided a promising strategy to tackle the challenges raised by the intrinsic properties of the lithium metal anode.

Samarium hexaboride is a trivial surface conductor.

Project description:SmB6 is predicted to be the first member of the intersection of topological insulators and Kondo insulators, strongly correlated materials in which the Fermi level lies in the gap of a many-body resonance that forms by hybridization between localized and itinerant states. While robust, surface-only conductivity at low temperature and the observation of surface states at the expected high symmetry points appear to confirm this prediction, we find both surface states at the (100) surface to be topologically trivial. We find the [Formula: see text] state to appear Rashba split and explain the prominent [Formula: see text] state by a surface shift of the many-body resonance. We propose that the latter mechanism, which applies to several crystal terminations, can explain the unusual surface conductivity. While additional, as yet unobserved topological surface states cannot be excluded, our results show that a firm connection between the two material classes is still outstanding.

Samarium-Activated La2Hf2O7 Nanoparticles as Multifunctional Phosphors.

Project description:Recent developments in the field of designing novel nanostructures with various functionalities have pushed the scientific world to design and develop high-quality nanomaterials with multifunctional applications. Here, we propose a new kind of doped metal oxide pyrochlore nanostructure for solid-state phosphor, X-ray scintillator, and optical thermometry. The developed samarium-activated La2Hf2O7 (LHOS) nanoparticles (NPs) emit a narrow and stable red emission with lower color temperature and adequate critical distance under near-UV and X-ray excitations. When the LHOS NPs are exposed to an energetic X-ray beam, the Sm3+ ions situated at the symmetric environment get excited along with those located at the asymmetric environment, which results in a low asymmetry ratio of Sm3+ under radioluminescence compared to photoluminescence. High activation energy and adequate thermal sensitivity of the LHOS NPs highlight their potential as a thermal sensor. Our results indicate that these Sm3+-activated La2Hf2O7 NPs can serve as a multifunctional UV, X-ray, and thermographic phosphor.

Polyphosphate synthetic activity of polyphosphate:AMP phosphotransferase in Acinetobacter johnsonii 210A.

Project description:Polyphosphate:AMP phosphotransferase (PAP) has been identified as an enzyme that catalyzes the phosphorylation of AMP with inorganic polyphosphates [poly(P)] as phosphate donors. We found that the purified PAP of Acinetobacter johnsonii 210A has poly(P) synthetic activity. The PAP catalyzes the dephosphorylation of ADP and processively synthesizes poly(P) of 200 to 700 residues. Comparatively lower concentrations of MgCl(2) (20 mM) were required to obtain optimum poly(P) synthetic activity, whereas higher concentrations of MgCl(2) (100 mM) were necessary for optimum PAP activity. ADP is preferred over GDP as a phosphate donor for poly(P) synthesis. The K(m) and V(max) values for ADP in the poly(P) synthetic activity of PAP were 8.3 mM and 55 micromol min(-1) mg(-1), respectively. We concluded that the PAP of A. johnsonii 210A is a novel type of poly(P) kinase that uses ADP and GDP as substrates.

Project description:ATP-dependent glucokinase is suggested to have evolved from a hypothetical polyphosphate (polyP)-dependent glucokinase (polyP-GK) via a bifunctional polyP/ATP glucokinase (polyP/ATP-GK). Here we showed that polyP-GK is present in a polyP-accumulating bacterium, Microlunatus phosphovorus. The polyP-GK produced glucose-6-P(i) from glucose and polyP, but it could not phosphorylate glucose with ATP. The polyP-GK was most closely related to the polyP/ATP-GK of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
