ABSTRACT: In the title mol-ecule, C(20)H(26)O(3), a clerodane diterpenoid isolated from Dodonaea viscosa-, the trans-fused six-membered rings of the deca-line system display chair conformations. The five-membered lactone ring adopts an envelope conformation and the five-membered furan ring is essentially planar with a maximum deviation of 0.0052 (12) Å.

The mean plane, calculated through all non-H atoms of the mol-ecule, except for the central CH2 atoms of the cyclo-hexene ring, which deviate by 0.340 (3) and -0.369 (3) Å from this mean plane, has an r.m.s. deviation of 0.012 Å. In the crystal, there are C-H⋯π contacts present, resulting in the formation of zigzag chains propagating along the [010] direction.

Project description:The title compound, C(15)H(20)O(4), is a eudesmanolide isolated from the Chinese medicinal plant Carpesium tris-te Maxim. The mol-ecule contains three rings, viz. two fused six-membered rings in chair conformations and a five-membered ring in a flattened envelope conformation. In the crystal, two hy-droxy groups are involved in the formation of intra- and inter-molecular O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The H atoms in these groups are split, with site-occupation factors of 0.5. The inter-molecular hydrogen bonds link mol-ecules into chains propagating in [010].

Conformational disorder occurs at the indol-2-yl-idene N atom, which results in two orientations for the hy-droxy-ethyl group [occupancy ratio = 0.896 (2):0.104 (2)], and the hy-droxy O atom of the 2-hy-droxy-ethyl group is located over three sites [occupancy ratio = 0.548 (2):0.348 (2):0.104 (2)]. An intra-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bond involving the lowest occupancy hy-droxy O atom is observed. In the crystal, the mol-ecules pack in parallel dimeric sheets about centres of symmetry, utilizing O-H⋯N(cyano), C-H⋯N(cyano) and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, in two sets parallel to (02-1) and (021) planes.

Each end of the twisted diacid [dihedral angle between the benzene rings = 74.33 (17)°] forms a strong O-H⋯N hydrogen bond with a 2,9-dimethyl-phenanthroline mol-ecule, forming a trimeric aggregate. The crystal structure comprises layers of acid and THF mol-ecules, and layers of 2,9-dimethyl-phenanthroline mol-ecules that alternate along the a axis, the main connections between them being of the type C-H⋯O.
