Room-temperature synthesis of nanometric and luminescent silver-MOFs.

Project description:Three silver-MOFs were prepared using an optimized, room-temperature methodology starting from AgNO₃ and dicarboxylate ligands in water/ethanol yielding Ag 2 BDC, Ag 2 NDC (UAM-1), and Ag 2 TDC (UAM-2) at 38%-48% (BDC, benzenedicarboxylate; NDC, 1,8-naphthalene-dicarboxylate; TDC, p-terphenyl-4,4″-dicarboxylate). They were characterized by PXRD/FT-IR/TGA/photoluminescence spectroscopy, and the former two by SEM. These materials started decomposing at 330°C, while showing stability. The crystal structure of UAM-1 was determined by PXRD, DFT calculations, and Rietveld refinement. In general, the structure was 3D, with the largest Ag-O bond interlinking 2D layers. The FT-IR spectra revealed 1450 and 1680 bands (cm-1) of asymmetrically stretching aniso-/iso-bidentate -COO in coordination with 2/3-Ag atoms, accompanied by Ag-O bands at 780-740 cm-1, all demonstrating the network formation. XRD and SEM showed nanometric-scale crystals in Ag₂BDC, and UAM-1 developed micrometric single-stranded/agglomerated fibrillar particles of varying nanometric widths. Luminescence spectroscopy showed emission by Ag₂BDC, which was attributed to ligand-to-metal or ligand-to-metal-metal transitions, suggesting energy transfer due to the short distance between adjacent BDC molecules. UAM-1 and UAM-2 did not show luminescence emission attributable to ligand-to-metal transition; rather, they presented only UV emission. The stabilities of Ag₂BDC and UAM-1 were evaluated in PBS/DMEM/DMEM+FBS media by XRD, which showed that they lost their crystallinity, resulting in AgCl due to soft-soft (Pearson's principle) affinity.

Green room temperature synthesis of silver-gold alloy nanoparticles.

Project description:Metallic alloy nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit interesting optical, electrical and catalytic properties, dependent on their size, shape and composition. In particular, silver-gold alloy NPs are widely applied as model systems to better understand the syntheses and formation (kinetics) of alloy NPs, as the two elements are fully miscible. Our study targets product design via environmentally friendly synthesis conditions. We use dextran as the reducing and stabilizing agent for the synthesis of homogeneous silver-gold alloy NPs at room temperature. Our approach is a one-pot, low temperature, reaction-controlled, green and scalable synthesis route of well-controlled composition and narrow particle size distribution. The composition over a broad range of molar gold contents is confirmed by scanning transmission electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM-EDX) measurements and auxiliary inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy measurements (ICP-OES). The distributions of the resulting particles in size and composition are obtained from multi-wavelength analytical ultracentrifugation using the optical back coupling method and further confirmed by high-pressure liquid chromatography. Finally, we provide insight into the reaction kinetics during the synthesis, discuss the reaction mechanism and demonstrate possibilities for scale-up by a factor of more than 250 by increasing the reactor volume and NP concentration.

Room temperature processed protective layer for printed silver electrodes.

Project description:Low-temperature processed printed silver electrodes pave the way for electrical connections in flexible substrates with reduced energy consumption. Despite their excellent performance and simple process, printed silver electrodes' poor stability limits their applications. This study demonstrates a transparent protective layer without thermal annealing for printed silver electrodes, which maintains its electrical properties for a long period of time. A fluoropolymer, specifically a cyclic transparent optical polymer (CYTOP), was used as a protective layer for silver. The CYTOP is room temperature processable and chemically stable against carboxyl acid. The introduction of the CYTOP film on the printed silver electrodes mitigates the chemical reaction between silver and carboxyl acid, thereby elongating its lifetime. Under heated acetic acid, the printed silver electrodes with a CYTOP protective layer maintained their initial resistance for up to 300 hours, while the electrodes without a protective layer were damaged within a few hours. A microscopic image shows that the protective layer enables printed electrodes to maintain their shape without damage. Hence, the protective layer guarantees the accurate and reliable performance of electronic devices with printed electrodes under actual operating conditions. This research will contribute to designing chemically reliable flexible devices in the near future.

Synthesis of functionalized benzo[1,3]dioxin-4-ones from salicylic acid and acetylenic esters and their direct amidation.

Project description:Direct synthesis of 4H-benzo[d][1,3]dioxin-4-one derivatives from salicylic acids and acetylenic esters (both mono- and disubstituted) has been described. The reaction is mediated by CuI and NaHCO3 in acetonitrile. Room temperature amidation of the synthesized 1,3-benzodioxinones with primary amines readily afforded the corresponding salicylamides in moderate to good yields.

Formation of porous ice frameworks at room temperature.

Project description:Bulk crystalline ices with ultralow densities have been demonstrated to be thermodynamically metastable at negative pressures. However, the direct formation of these bulk porous ices from liquid water at negative pressures is extremely challenging. Inspired by approaches toward porous media based on host-guest chemistry, such as metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks, we herein demonstrate via molecular dynamics simulations that a class of ultralow-density porous ices with upright channels can be formed spontaneously from liquid water at 300 K with the assistance of carbon nanotube arrays. We refer to these porous ice polymorphs as water oxygen-vertex frameworks (WOFs). Notably, our simulations revealed that the liquid-WOF phase transition is first-order and occurs at room temperature. All the WOFs exhibited the unique structural feature that they can be regarded as assemblies of nanoribbons of hexagonal bilayer ice (2D ice I) at their armchair or zigzag edges. Based on density functional theory calculations, a comprehensive phase diagram of the WOFs was constructed considering both the thermodynamic and thermal stabilities of the porous ices at negative pressures. Like other types of porous media, these WOFs may be applicable to gas storage, purification, and separation. Moreover, these biocompatible porous ice networks may be exploited as medical-related carriers.

Base-Promoted Chemodivergent Formation of 1,4-Benzoxazepin-5(4H)-ones and 1,3-Benzoxazin-4(4H)-ones Switched by Solvents.

Project description:The KOH-promoted chemodivergent benzannulation of ortho-fluorobenzamides with 2-propyn-1-ol can afford either 1,4-benzoxazepin-5(4H)-ones or 1,3-benzoxazin-4(4H)-ones in good yields with high selectivity, depending greatly upon the use of solvents. In the case of using DMSO, the intermolecular benzannulation produced seven-membered benzo-fused heterocycles of 1,4-benzoxazepin-5(4H)-ones, whereas in MeCN, the six-membered benzo-fused heterocycles of 1,3-benzoxazin-4(4H)-ones were formed. The KOH-promoted benzannulation proceeded most probably through the C-F nucleophilic substitution of ortho-fluorobenzamides with 2-propyn-1-ol to give the intermediate of ortho-[(2-propynyl)oxy]benzamide, which underwent the intramolecular hydroamidation in a different manner to afford either seven- or six-membered benzo-fused heterocycles.

Photochemical Preparation of 1,2-Dihydro-3 H-indazol-3-ones in Aqueous Solvent at Room Temperature.

Project description:o-Nitrosobenzaldehyde is a reactive intermediate useful in the synthesis of nitrogen heterocycles. Previous strategies for using o-nitrosobenzaldehyde involve its isolation via chromatography and/or formation under harsh conditions. Herein, this intermediate was photochemically generated in situ from o-nitrobenzyl alcohols in a mild, efficient manner for the construction of 1,2-dihydro-3 H-indazol-3-ones using an aqueous solvent at room temperature. This convenient reaction offers several advantages over reported methods. The commercially available photoreactor employed 3 × 18 W bulbs outputting broad emission above 365 nm.

Silver Enhances Hematite Nanoparticles Based Ethanol Sensor Response and Selectivity at Room Temperature.

Project description:Gas sensors are fundamental for continuous online monitoring of volatile organic compounds. Gas sensors based on semiconductor materials have demonstrated to be highly competitive, but are generally made of expensive materials and operate at high temperatures, which are drawbacks of these technologies. Herein is described a novel ethanol sensor for room temperature (25 °C) measurements based on hematite (α‑Fe2O3)/silver nanoparticles. The AgNPs were shown to increase the oxide semiconductor charge carrier density, but especially to enhance the ethanol adsorption rate boosting the selectivity and sensitivity, thus allowing quantification of ethanol vapor in 2-35 mg L-1 range with an excellent linear relationship. In addition, the α-Fe2O3/Ag 3.0 wt% nanocomposite is cheap, and easy to make and process, imparting high perspectives for real applications in breath analyzers and/or sensors in food and beverage industries. This work contributes to the advance of gas sensing at ambient temperature as a competitive alternative for quantification of conventional volatile organic compounds.

Room-Temperature High-Detectivity Flexible Near-Infrared Photodetectors with Chalcogenide Silver Telluride Nanoparticles.

Project description:Herein, flexible near-infrared (NIR) photodetectors were prepared using silver telluride (Ag5Te3) nanoparticles (NPs) for optoelectronic applications. For the main channel materials of the photodetectors, Ag5Te3 NPs were used, which were synthesized in an aqueous solution. Moreover, Ag5Te3 thin films were successfully fabricated on plastic substrates at 150 °C using redistributed Ag5Te3 NPs in aqueous inks. The crystal structure, chemistry, and optoelectronic properties of the synthesized photodetectors were studied. The fabricated flexible Ag5Te3-based photodetectors achieved a detectivity of 6.27 × 109 cm Hz1/2 W-1 (>109) at room temperature under ∼0.35% compressive and tensile strains. The obtained detectivity value exceeds those of two-dimensional inorganic layered material phototransistors-such as MoS2-or commercial thermistor bolometers at room temperature (∼109). Furthermore, the proposed novel method for the synthesis of Ag5Te3 thin films on plastic substrates can be applied to other Ag5Te3-based applications in the future.
