The genus Hygrocrates Deeleman-Reinhold, 1988 (Araneae, Dysderidae) in Turkey.

ABSTRACT: A new species, Hygrocrates deelemanus Kunt & Yağmur sp. n., is described on the basis of both sexes from the Mediterranean region of Turkey. Detailed morphological descriptions, diagnosis and figures of the copulatory organs of both Turkish species are presented. An identification key is presented for all the currently known species of Hygrocrates.

Project description:Two new species, Harpactea arnedoisp. n. and Harpactea kenceisp. n., are described on the basis of both sexes from the eastern Mediterranean and Aegean regions of Turkey. Harpactea kenceisp. n. can be easily distinguished from all other Turkish and European representatives of the genus by the structure of the flattened, massive embolus on the male copulatory organ. Although resembling Stalagtia in palpal morphology, we describe one of the new species as Harpactea arnedoisp. n. For both Turkish species, detailed morphological descriptions and diagnoses are presented together with figures of the copulatory organs.

A geographical distribution database of the genus <i>Dysdera</i> in the Canary Islands (Araneae, Dysderidae).

Project description:The ground-dweller spider genus Dysdera shows very high species richness on the oceanic archipelago of the Canary Islands, providing one of the most outstanding examples of island radiation among spiders, only paralleled by Tetragnatha spiders on the Hawaiian archipelago. A georeferenced database of the 48 Dysdera species occurring in the Canary Islands was assembled to facilitate ongoing and future research on this remarkable lineage. All species are endemic to the archipelago except for the cosmopolitan Dysdera crocata. The dataset consists of 794 distributional records documented from 1971 to 2015, each locality being represented only once per species. Distribution maps are provided for each species, along with basic diversity and distribution information. The database and geographical maps included in this article stand for the most updated, accurate and complete information on the distribution of the spider genus Dysdera in the Canary Islands.

A survey of East Mediterranean Dasumia (Araneae, Dysderidae) with description of new species.

Project description:Dasumia gasparoisp. n. isdescribed based on specimens of both sexes. The new species is compared with the similar Dasumia crassipalpis (Simon, 1882), described from Syria; and with Dasumia mariandyna Brignoli, 1979, the only previously known species of the genusrecordedfrom Turkey. Furthermore, we point out that, due to some contradictions to the original description of the genus, Dasumia mariandyna may necessarily belong to another genus. Detailed morphological descriptions, diagnosis and figures of the copulatory organs of the new species are presented.

Notes on Dysderidae (Arachnida, Araneae) of Armenia and Iran, with new species and records.

Project description:New data are provided on dysderid spiders of Armenia and Iran. Dysderahaykanasp. nov. is described based on male specimens collected in Kotayk and Lor provinces, central and northern Armenia. The female of Dysderanakhchivanica Beydizade, Shafaie & Guseinov, 2018 is described for the first time, and the species is newly recorded from Armenia. Furthermore, new distribution data are provided for Harpacteaarmenica Dunin, 1989, including the first record of the species from Iran. Photographs and a distribution map are provided for all three species.

Project description:The taxonomy of the Iranian species of the dysderid spider genus Dysdera Latreille, 1804 is revised. Currently, the only species of this genus known from Iran is D.pococki Dunin, 1985, albeit on the basis of a doubtful record. The following 14 species are described as new to science in this paper: D.achaemenessp. nov. (♀; Fars), D.bakhtiarisp. nov. (♂; Chaharmahal & Bakhtiari), D.damavandicasp. nov. (♂; Mazandaran), D.genoensissp. nov. (♂♀; Hormozgan), D.hormuzensissp. nov. (♀; Hormozgan), D.iranicasp. nov. (♂♀; Fars, Hormozgan), D.isfahanicasp. nov. (♂♀; Isfahan), D.mazerunisp. nov. (♀; Mazandaran), D.medessp. nov. (♂; Tehran), D.persicasp. nov. (♂♀; Golestan, Mazandaran), D.sagartiasp. nov. (♂♀; Tehran), D.tapuriasp. nov. (♂♀; Mazandaran), D.verkanasp. nov. (♂; Golestan), and D.xerxesisp. nov. (♂; Bushehr). Distribution records of all species are mapped. Also, the taxonomy of Mistura Petrunkevitch, 1971 and Segistriites Straus, 1967, two fossil genera currently considered in Dysderidae, is discussed and the latter is transferred to Segestriidae.

Decreasing trends in cardiovascular mortality in Turkey between 1988 and 2008.

Project description:BackgroundCardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality increased in developed countries until the 1970s then started to decline. Turkey is about to complete its demographic transition, which may also influence mortality trends. This study evaluated trends in coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke mortality between 1988 and 2008.MethodsThe number of deaths by cause (ICD-8), age and sex were obtained from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) annually between 1988 and 2008. Population statistics were based on census data (1990 and 2000) and Turkstat projections. European population standardised mortality rates for CHD and stroke were calculated for men and women over 35 years old. Joinpoint Regression was used to identify the points at which a statistically significant (p < 0.05) change of the trend occurred.ResultsThe CHD mortality rate increased by 2.9% in men and 2.0% in women annually from 1988 to 1994, then started to decline. The annual rate of decline for men was 1.7% between 1994-2008, whilst in women it was 2.8% between 1994-2000 and 6.7% between 2005-2008 (p < 0.05 for all periods).Stroke mortality declined between 1990-1994 (annual fall of 3.8% in both sexes), followed by a slight increase between 1994-2004 (0.6% in men, 1.1% in women), then a further decline until 2008 (annual reduction of 4.4% in men, 7.9% in women) (p < 0.05 for all periods).ConclusionsA decrease in CVD mortality was observed from 1995 onwards in Turkey. The causes need to be explored in detail to inform future policy priorities in noncommunicable disease control.

First Cytogenetic Analysis of Eratigena agrestris (Araneae: Agelenidae) From Turkey.

Project description:In this study, chromosomal characteristics of Eratigena agrestris (Agelenidae) were investigated for the first time. Karyotype features including diploid chromosome number, sex chromosome system, chromosome morphology, and meiotic behavior were obtained from specimens collected in two localities of Mediterranean region. A spreading method including dissection, hypotonization, fixation, and staining was used to prepare the chromosome slides. In a total, 10 adult males were used due to having high numbers of dividing cells. Cytogenetical results showed that the diploid chromosome number and sex chromosome system was 2n? = 42 (X1X20). The sex chromosomes were identified tentatively. All chromosomes were telocentric. Relative chromosome lengths of autosomal pairs ranged between 5.65 and 3.32%, and relative chromosome lengths of X1 and X2 were 5.33 and 4.19%, respectively. In the first meiotic division stages, bivalents usually had one chiasma, but some had two chiasmata. At the end of the meiosis, two kinds of nuclei, with or without sex chromosomes, have occurred. These results contribute to a better characterization of the Agelenidae cytogenetic.
