ABSTRACT: The title compound, C(7)H(11)NO(7)P(2), exists as a zwitterion in which the positive charge resides on the protonated pyridyl N atom and the negative charge on one of the two phosphate groups. In the crystal, adjacent molcules are linked by O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds into a three-dimensional network.

Project description:The crystal structure of the title salt, C(5)H(6)NO(+)·HSO(4) (-), consists of planar(r.m.s. deviation = 0.001 Å) 4-hydroxy-pyridinium cations and hydrogen sulfate anions which are hydrogen bonded into a layer motif. In the anion, the S-O bond [1.551 (2) Å] involving the O atom bearing the acid H atom is longer than the other three S-O bonds, which range from 1.437 (1) to 1.454 (1) Å.

Project description:In the title salt hydrate, C(5)H(6)NO(+)·C(6)HCl(2)O(4) (-)·H(2)O, the three components are held together by O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, as well as by C-H⋯O contacts, forming a double-tape structure along the c axis. Within each tape, the pyridinium ring and the chloranilate ring are almost coplanar, forming a dihedral angle of 2.35 (7)°.

Project description:In the crystal structure of the title salt, 3C(5)H(6)NO(+)·HSO(4) (-)·SO(4) (2-)·H(2)O, the hydrogen sulfate ion is linked to the sulfate ion by an O-H⋯O hydrogen bond. The hydrogen sulfate-sulfate anion is a hydrogen-bond acceptor for the three independent cations and the uncoordinated water mol-ecule, the hydrogen-bonding inter-actions giving rise to a three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded network. In the hydrogen sulfate-sulfate species, one of the sulfate groups is disordered in respect of its O atoms in a 2:1 ratio.

Project description:The crystal structure of the title compound, 2C(5)H(6)NO(2) (+)·C(4)H(2)O(4) (2-), consists of 3-hydroxy-pyridinium cations and fumarate dianions. The dianion is located on an inversion center and the cation is linked to it by O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The cation is twisted with respect to the anion by 24.83 (5)°.

Project description:In the title compound, C(5)H(8)N(3) (+)·C(7)H(5)O(3) (-), the pyridine N atom is protonated. In the 4-hydroxy-benzoate anion, the carboxyl-ate group is twisted slightly out of the benzene ring plane by an angle of 3.77 (5)°. The protonated N atom and one of the two amino groups are hydrogen-bonded to the 4-hydroxy-benzoate anion through a pair of N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming an R(2) (2)(8) ring motif. The crystal structure is further stabilized by O-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and π-π inter-actions involving the pyridinium rings [centroid-centroid distance of 3.6277 (5) Å], leading to the formation of a three-dimensional network.

Three in One: The Versatility of Hydrogen Bonding Interaction in Halide Salts with Hydroxy-Functionalized Pyridinium Cations.

Project description:The paradigm of supramolecular chemistry relies on the delicate balance of noncovalent forces. Here we present a systematic approach for controlling the structural versatility of halide salts by the nature of hydrogen bonding interactions. We synthesized halide salts with hydroxy-functionalized pyridinium cations [HOCn Py]+ (n=2, 3, 4) and chloride, bromide and iodide anions, which are typically used as precursor material for synthesizing ionic liquids by anion metathesis reaction. The X-ray structures of these omnium halides show two types of hydrogen bonding: 'intra-ionic' H-bonds, wherein the anion interacts with the hydroxy group and the positively charged ring at the same cation, and 'inter-ionic' H-bonds, wherein the anion also interacts with the hydroxy group and the ring system but of different cations. We show that hydrogen bonding is controllable by the length of the hydroxyalkyl chain and the interaction strength of the anion. Some molten halide salts exhibit a third type of hydrogen bonding. IR spectra reveal elusive H-bonds between the OH groups of cations, showing interaction between ions of like charge. They are formed despite the repulsive interaction between the like-charged ions and compete with the favored cation-anion H-bonds. All types of H-bonding are analyzed by quantum chemical methods and the natural bond orbital approach, emphasizing the importance of charge transfer in these interactions. For simple omnium salts, we evidenced three distinct types of hydrogen bonds: Three in one!

Each of the two amino groups are hydrogen-bonded to the O atoms of two different sets of succinate groups.. The crystal structure is further stabilized by O-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.
