Prototheca wickerhamii mimicking yeast: a cautionary tale.

ABSTRACT: Prototheca spp. are environmental algae that may cause serious infection in the immunocompromised patient. Clinical manifestations may mimic other diseases. We present a case of fatal infection in a 78-year-old cardiac transplant recipient and discuss pitfalls in the clinical and laboratory diagnoses.
