Catena-Poly[[[tetra-aqua-cobalt(II)]-μ-4,4'-bipyridine-κN:N'] pyridine-3,5-dicarboxyl-ate trihydrate].

ABSTRACT: The crystal structure of the title compound, {[Co(C(10)H(8)N(2))(H(2)O)(4)](C(7)H(3)NO(4))·3H(2)O}(n), consists of Co(II) polymeric complex cations, uncoordinated pyridine-3,5-dicarboxyl-ate anions and lattice water mol-ecules. The Co(II) cation is coordinated by two N atoms from two 4,4'-bipyridine ligands and four water mol-ecules in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. The 4,4'-bipyridine ligands bridge Co cations, forming a polymeric chain running along the b axis. The two pyridine rings of the 4,4'-biyridine are twisted to each other by a dihedral angle of 8.95 (9)°. Extensive O-H⋯O hydrogen bonding network is present in the crystal structure.

In the chain, the Zn(II) atom adopts a slightly distorted octa-hedral coordination geometry involving four water mol-ecules at the equatorial positions. The noncoordinated benzene-1,4-dicarboxyl-ate anion, which is also located on a twofold rotation axis, bridges adjacent chains through O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional supra-molecular network.

These are connected into supra-molecular layers by hydrogen bonding involving aqua ligands, perchlorate anions and uncoordinated water mol-ecules. A twofold inter-penetrated primitive cubic supra-molecular network is formed by the inter-action of pseudo-layers by hydrogen bonding between aqua ligands and unligated 4,4'-bipyridine mol-ecules.

Project description:The two independent Mn(II) ions in the polymeric title compound, {[Mn(2)(C(6)H(2)N(2)O(4))(C(10)H(8)N(2))(H(2)O)(6)]SO(4)·3H(2)O}, exhibit distorted MnN(2)O(4) octa-hedral coordination geometries, with the pyrimidine-4,6-dicarboxyl-ate (pmdc) ligand acting in the bis-chelating μ-(κO,κN:κO',κN') bridging mode and the 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy) ligand in the μ-(κN:κN') bridging mode. The remaining coordination sites are occupied by O atoms of water mol-ecules. As a consequence, cationic chains of [Mn(2)(μ-pmdc)(μ-4,4'-bpy)(H(2)O)(6)](2+) are generated, which extend approximately along the a axis. Sulfate counter-anions and three uncoordinated water mol-ecules complete the structure, which is stabilized by multiple O-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions between the structural units.

The Zn(II) ion, 4,4'-bipy ligand and anion lie on special positions of 2/m site symmetry.
