Project description:Although the risk for depression appears to be related to daily dietary habits, how the proportion of major macronutrients affects the occurrence of depression remains largely unknown. This study aims to estimate the association between macronutrients (i.e., carbohydrate, protein, fat) and depression through national survey datasets from the United States and South Korea. Association between the prevalence of depression and each macronutrient was measured from 60,935 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and 15,700 participants from the South Korea NHANES (K-NHANES) databases. When the proportion of calories intake by protein increased by 10%, the prevalence of depression was significantly reduced both in the United States [Odds Ratio, OR (95% CI), 0.621 (0.530-0.728)] and South Korea [0.703 (0.397-0.994)]. An association between carbohydrate intake and the prevalence of depression was seen in the United States [1.194 (1.116-1.277)], but not in South Korea. Fat intake was not significantly associated with depression in either country. Subsequent analysis showed that the low protein intake groups had significantly higher risk for depression than the normal protein intake groups in both the United States [1.648 (1.179-2.304)] and South Korea [3.169 (1.598-6.286)]. In the daily diet of macronutrients, the proportion of protein intake is significantly associated with the prevalence of depression. These associations were more prominent in adults with insufficient protein intake, and the pattern of association between macronutrients and depression in Asian American and South Korean populations were similar. Our findings suggest that the proportion of macronutrients intake in everyday life may be related to the occurrence of depression.

Project description:BackgroundThe Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic resulted in a dramatic increase in the prevalence of anxiety and depression globally. Although the impact on the mental health of young adults was especially strong, its underlying mechanisms remain elusive.Materials and methodsUsing a network approach, the present study investigated the putative pathways between pandemic-related factors and anxiety and depressive symptoms among young adults in South Korea and the U.S. Network analyses were conducted on cross-country data collected during the COVID-19 lockdown period (n = 1,036). Our model included depression symptoms (PHQ-9), generalized anxiety symptoms (GAD-7), and COVID-19-related factors (e.g., COVID-19-related traumatic stress, pandemic concerns, access to medical/mental health services).ResultsThe overall structure of pandemic-to-symptom networks of South Korea and the U.S. were found to be similar. In both countries, COVID-related stress and negative future anticipation (an anxiety symptom) were identified as bridging nodes between pandemic-related factors and psychological distress. In addition, worry-related symptoms (e.g., excessive worry, uncontrollable worry) were identified as key contributors in maintaining the overall pandemic-to-symptom network in both countries.ConclusionThe similar network structures and patterns observed in both countries imply that there may exist a stable relationship between the pandemic and internalizing symptoms above and beyond the sociocultural differences. The current findings provide new insights into the common potential pathway between the pandemic and internalizing symptoms in South Korea and in the U.S. and inform policymakers and mental health professionals of potential intervention targets to alleviate internalizing symptoms.

Project description:Variations in ambient temperature (Ta) may significantly influence the gut microbiotas of ectothermic and endothermic animals, affecting fitness. It remains unclear, however, whether temperature fluctuations affect the gut microbial communities of hibernating animals during torpor. To investigate temperature-induced changes in the gut microbiota during hibernation under entirely natural conditions, we took advantage of two adjacent but distinct populations of the least horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus pusillus), which inhabit sites with a similar summer Ta but a different winter Ta. Using 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing, we estimated differences in gut microbial diversity and composition between the hibernating (winter) and active (summer) R. pusillus populations at both sites. During the active period, gut microbiotas did not differ significantly between the two populations, probably due to the similar Tas. However, during hibernation, a higher Ta was associated with decreased α-diversity in the gut microbiome. During hibernation, temperature variation did not significantly affect the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, the dominant phylum at both sites, but marked site-specific differences were detected in the relative abundances of Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Tenericutes. In total, 74 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) were significantly differentially abundant between the hibernating and active bat guts across the two sites; most of these ASVs were associated with the cooler site, and many belonged to pathogenic genera, suggesting that lower ambient temperatures during hibernation may increase the risk of pathogen proliferation in the host gut. Our findings help to clarify the mechanisms underlying the gut microbiota-driven adaptation of hibernating mammals to temperature changes. IMPORTANCE Temperature variations affect gut microbiome diversity and structure in both ectothermic and endothermic animals. Here, we aimed to characterize temperature-induced changes in the gut microbiotas of adjacent natural populations of the least horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus pusillus) which hibernate at different ambient temperatures. We found that the ambient temperature significantly affected the α-diversity, but not the β-diversity, of the gut microbiota. Bats hibernating at cooler temperatures experienced more drastic shifts in gut microbiome structure, with consequent effects on energy-related metabolic pathways. Our results provide novel insights into the effects of ambient temperature on the gut microbiotas of hibernating animals.

Project description:The substantial social and economic burden attributable to smoking is well-known, with heavy smokers at higher risk of chronic disease and premature mortality than light smokers and nonsmokers. In aging societies with high rates of male smoking such as in East Asia, smoking is a leading preventable risk factor for extending lives (including work-lives) and healthy aging. However, little is known about whether smoking interventions targeted at heavy smokers relative to light smokers lead to disproportionately larger improvements in life expectancy and prevalence of chronic diseases and how the effects vary across populations. Using a microsimulation model, we examined the health effects of smoking reduction by simulating an elimination of smoking among subgroups of smokers in South Korea, Singapore, and the United States. We found that life expectancy would increase by 0.2 to 1.5 years among light smokers and 2.5 to 3.7 years among heavy smokers. Whereas both interventions led to an increased life expectancy and decreased the prevalence of chronic diseases in all three countries, the life-extension benefits were greatest for those who would otherwise have been heavy smokers. Our findings illustrate how smoking interventions may have significant economic and social benefits, especially for life extension, that vary across countries.

Project description:Background/aimsSouth Korean soldiers are exposed to similar environmental factors. In this study, we sought to evaluate the gut microbiome of healthy young male soldiers (HYMS) and to identify the primary factors influencing the microbiome composition.MethodsWe prospectively collected stool from 100 HYMS and performed next-generation sequencing of the 16S rRNA genes of fecal bacteria. Clinical data, including data relating to the diet, smoking, drinking, and exercise, were collected.ResultsThe relative abundances of the bacterial phyla Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria were 72.3%, 14.5%, 8.9%, and 4.0%, respectively. Fifteen species, most of which belonged to Firmicutes (87%), were detected in all examined subjects. Using cluster analysis, we found that the subjects could be divided into the two enterotypes based on the gut microbiome bacterial composition. Compared with enterotype 2 subjects, subjects classified as enterotype 1 tended to be characterized by higher frequencies of potentially harmful lifestyle habits (current smoker: 55.6% vs 36.6%, p=0.222; heavy drinker: 16.7% vs 3.7%, p=0.120; insufficient physical activity: 27.8% vs 14.6%, p=0.318). We identified a significant difference in the microbiome compositions of current and noncurrent smokers (p=0.008); the former differed from the latter mainly in a relatively lower abundance of Bifidobacterium species and a higher abundance of Negativicutes.ConclusionsA high abundance of Actinobacteria and low abundance of Bacteroidetes were the main features distinguishing the gut microbiomes of HYMS, and current smokers could be differentiated from noncurrent smokers by their lower abundance of Bifidobacterium and higher abundance of Negativicutes.

Project description:BackgroundCarotid plaque has emerged as a marker of coronary heart disease (CHD) risk. Comparison of carotid plaque burden between different race/ethnic groups may provide a relative estimate of their future CHD risk.MethodsWe conducted a population-based study among apparently healthy middle-aged men aged 40-49 years (ERA JUMP study (n = 924)) and recruited 310 Whites in Pittsburgh, US, 313 Japanese in Otsu, Japan, and 301 Koreans in Ansan, South Korea. The number of carotid plaque and CHD risk factors was assessed using a standardized protocol across all centers. The burden of carotid plaque was compared between race/ethnic groups after adjustment for age and BMI, and after multivariable adjustment for other CHD risk factors using marginalized zero-inflated Poisson regression models. Cross-sectional associations of risk factors with plaque were examined.ResultsWhites (22.8%) had more than four-fold higher prevalence (p < 0.01) of carotid plaque than Japanese men (4.8%) while the prevalence among Koreans was 10.6%. These differences remained significant after adjustment for age, BMI as well as other risk factors - incidence density ratio (95% confidence interval) for plaque was 0.13 (0.07, 0.24) for Japanese and 0.32 (0.18, 0.58) for Koreans as compared to Whites. Age, hypertension and diabetes were the only risk factors significantly associated with presence of carotid plaque in the overall population.ConclusionWhites have significantly higher carotid plaque burden than men in Japan and Korea. Lower carotid plaque burden among Japanese and Koreans is independent of traditional CVD risk factors.

Project description:Introduction:In the context of different regulatory environments, different patterns of e-cigarette use have emerged among adolescents worldwide. The United States and South Korea are two examples, the latter of which has maintained much more extensive regulation of e-cigarettes. Methods:This analysis compares the prevalence of e-cigarette and conventional cigarette use between 2011 and 2015 from the Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey and the U.S. National Youth Tobacco Survey, both nationally representative samples of middle and high school students that use similar questions. Results:E-cigarette prevalence (past 30 days) among South Korean adolescents decreased from 4.7% in 2011 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 4.4-5.0) to 4.0% (3.7-4.3) in 2015 but increased dramatically among US adolescents from 0.9% (0.7-1.2) to 11.2% (9.9-12.7). Cigarette prevalence (past 30 days) decreased in South Korea from 12.1% (11.6-12.7) to 7.8% (CI: 7.3-8.3) and in the United States from 11.1% (9.5-12.6) to 6.1% (5.1-7.3). Combined prevalence of cigarette and e-cigarette use (adjusting for dual users) decreased in South Korea from 13.2% (12.7-13.8) to 8.5% (8.0-9.1) but increased in the United States from 11.3% (9.7-12.9) to 14.0% (12.4-15.7). Conclusions:In South Korea, where e-cigarettes are extensively regulated, adolescent e-cigarette use remained stable at a low level, whereas in the United States, where e-cigarette regulation has been limited, e-cigarette use increased. Combined e-cigarette plus cigarette use declined in South Korea whereas it increased in the United States. The restrictive policies in South Korea likely contributed to lower overall product use. Implications:This paper compared the strength of regulation of South Korea and the United States with the prevalence of adolescents' e-cigarette and cigarette use and suggests that more restrictive policies likely to contribute to lower e-cigarette use and overall use of e-cigarette and cigarette.
