The logic of fashion cycles.

ABSTRACT: Many cultural traits exhibit volatile dynamics, commonly dubbed fashions or fads. Here we show that realistic fashion-like dynamics emerge spontaneously if individuals can copy others' preferences for cultural traits as well as traits themselves. We demonstrate this dynamics in simple mathematical models of the diffusion, and subsequent abandonment, of a single cultural trait which individuals may or may not prefer. We then simulate the coevolution between many cultural traits and the associated preferences, reproducing power-law frequency distributions of cultural traits (most traits are adopted by few individuals for a short time, and very few by many for a long time), as well as correlations between the rate of increase and the rate of decrease of traits (traits that increase rapidly in popularity are also abandoned quickly and vice versa). We also establish that alternative theories, that fashions result from individuals signaling their social status, or from individuals randomly copying each other, do not satisfactorily reproduce these empirical observations.

Project description:Understanding the kinetics of circadian transcriptional regulation has recently advanced thanks to genome-wide dynamic mapping of RNA Polymerase II, chromatin marks such as histone 3 modifications, and several core clock regulatory factors. To obtain deeper mechanistic insights into the determinant of phase-specific transcription, we here extend previous analyses of the CycliX Consortium by integrating new genome-wide datasets enabling systematic identification of active regulatory regions in the mouse liver. DNase I hypersensitive sites (DHS)-mapping within nuclear chromatin is a powerful method to identify active regulatory elements in the genome. Experiments were performed throughout the diurnal cycle to obtain a temporal map of active regulatory elements. In addition, we quantified H3K27ac, which mark active regulatory regions, throughout the diurnal cycle and RNA Polymerase II using chromatin immunoprecipitation data analysis. DHS were validated as likely regulatory elements by footprinting analyses and overlaps with published ChIP-seq datasets. Analysis of the regions displaying diurnal patterns revealed promoter, transcription start site (TSS)-proximal and TSS-distal elements potentially involved in the regulation of rhythmic gene transcription. Peak phases of DNase I accessibility and H3K27ac levels correlated well with RNA Polymerase II loadings, and regulatory elements oscillated with phases close to those of nearest TSS, which prompted us to use these signals to infer regulatory relationships. Comparisons with results in a Bmal1 -/- genotype (KO) revealed comparable levels of diurnal transcription oscillations likely driven by nutrient and food-entrained rhythms. Using linear modeling, we inferred activities of transcription factors around the clock in WT and KO datasets to reveal that in absence of a functional core circadian clock, FOX transcription factors and glucocorticoid receptor appear to be the main drivers of phase-specific expression. This raises the interesting question of whether light-driven circadian entrainment from the central pacemaker in the SCN acts to counter effect food-related signals.

Project description:BackgroundLogic models are commonly used in evaluations to represent the causal processes through which interventions produce outcomes, yet significant debate is currently taking place over whether they can describe complex interventions which adapt to context. This paper assesses the logic models used in healthcare research from a complexity perspective. A typology of existing logic models is proposed, as well as a formal methodology for deriving more flexible and dynamic logic models.AnalysisVarious logic model types were tested as part of an evaluation of a complex Patient Experience Toolkit (PET) intervention, developed and implemented through action research across six hospital wards/departments in the English NHS. Three dominant types of logic model were identified, each with certain strengths but ultimately unable to accurately capture the dynamics of PET. Hence, a fourth logic model type was developed to express how success hinges on the adaption of PET to its delivery settings. Aspects of the Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (PARIHS) model were incorporated into a traditional logic model structure to create a dynamic "type 4" logic model that can accommodate complex interventions taking on a different form in different settings.ConclusionLogic models can be used to model complex interventions that adapt to context but more flexible and dynamic models are required. An implication of this is that how logic models are used in healthcare research may have to change. Using logic models to forge consensus among stakeholders and/or provide precise guidance across different settings will be inappropriate in the case of complex interventions that adapt to context. Instead, logic models for complex interventions may be targeted at facilitators to enable them to prospectively assess the settings they will be working in and to develop context-sensitive facilitation strategies. Researchers should be clear as to why they are using a logic model and experiment with different models to ensure they have the correct type.
