Nonhuman primate models of stroke for translational neuroprotection research.

ABSTRACT: Despite the discovery of several promising neuroprotective therapies in rodent models of stroke, no therapy other than the fibrinolytics has been found to be effective in human clinical trials. To address potential discrepancies between rodent and human studies, the Stroke Therapy Academic Industry Roundtable (STAIR) committee suggested that nonhuman primates (NHPs) be used for preclinical, translational stroke studies. Due to the paucity of stroke studies in NHPs, few experimental models have been described. Critical factors in designing NHP stroke models include the choice of species, the method of inducing the stroke and the choice of outcome measures.
