Project description:The title molecular salt, C(6)H(16)N(+)·CH(3)SO(3) (-), has been determined at 150 K. Two diisopropyl-ammonium cations (dipH) and two anions form N-H⋯O hydrogen-bonded cyclic dimers lying around centers of symmetry. Only two of the three O atoms of the methane-sulfonate anion are involved in hydrogen bonding, resulting in slightly longer S-O bond lengths. The title structure represents an example of a sulfonate anion that is part of a hydrogen-bonding R(4) (4)(12) graph-set motif, which is well known for related dipH acetates. Additionally, the Raman and the IR spectroscopic data for the title compound are presented.

Project description:The cations and anions of the title salt, 3C(6)H(16)N(+)·HSO(4) (-)·SO(4) (2-), are linked by N-H⋯O and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds into a three-dimensional network. The hydrogensulfate ion, with a single S-O(H) bond of 1.563 (2) Å, forms a short O-H⋯O hydrogen bond [O⋯O = 2.609 (2) Å] to the sulfate ion. The hydrogensulfate ion accepts two hydrogen bonds from two cations, whereas the sulfate ion, as an acceptor, binds to four cations. The sulfate ion is disordered approximately equally over two sites related by rotation around one of the O-S bonds.

Project description:The title compound, (C(6)H(16)N)(2)[SnCl(6)], crystallizes with one diisopropyl-ammonium cation lying on a general position and the hexa-chloridostannate(IV) anion about a centre of inversion. The [SnCl(6)](2-) anion undergoes a slight distortion from octa-hedral symmetry as the result of the formation of four unforked charge-supported N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds. The hydrogen bonds between the cations and anions form layers perpendicular to [101]. These layers are built by 24-membered rings which can be classified with an R(8) (8)(24) graph-set descriptor. According to this hydrogen-bonding motif, the title compound is isostructural with (C(6)H(16)N)(2)[IrCl(6)].

Simultaneous nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane and ammonium oxidation processes.

Project description:Nitrite-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (n-damo) and ammonium (anammox) are two recently discovered processes in the nitrogen cycle that are catalyzed by n-damo bacteria, including "Candidatus Methylomirabilis oxyfera," and anammox bacteria, respectively. The feasibility of coculturing anammox and n-damo bacteria is important for implementation in wastewater treatment systems that contain substantial amounts of both methane and ammonium. Here we tested this possible coexistence experimentally. To obtain such a coculture, ammonium was fed to a stable enrichment culture of n-damo bacteria that still contained some residual anammox bacteria. The ammonium supplied to the reactor was consumed rapidly and could be gradually increased from 1 to 20 mM/day. The enriched coculture was monitored by fluorescence in situ hybridization and 16S rRNA and pmoA gene clone libraries and activity measurements. After 161 days, a coculture with about equal amounts of n-damo and anammox bacteria was established that converted nitrite at a rate of 0.1 kg-N/m(3)/day (17.2 mmol day(-1)). This indicated that the application of such a coculture for nitrogen removal may be feasible in the near future.
