3,9'-Bi(9H-fluorene).

ABSTRACT: THE TITLE COMPOUND [SYSTEMATIC NAME: 9-(9H-fluoren-3-yl)-9H-fluorene], C(26)H(18), was obtained unintentionally as the product of the synthesis of a compound based on fluorene-thio-phene units. The two fluorene rings are connected through C atoms in the 3- and 9'-positions, and the dihedral angle between the mean planes of the two fluorene units is 78.57 (6)°.

Project description:The title compound, C34H34, systematic name 9,9,9',9'-tetra-ethyl-2,2'-bi(9H-fluorene), crystallized with two crystallographically independent mol-ecules (A and B) in the asymmetric unit. These differ mainly in the orientation of the lateral ethyl chains: in mol-ecule A, they are both on the same side of the mol-ecule whereas in mol-ecule B, one di-ethyl-fluorene moiety has undergone a 180° rotation such that the two pairs of ethyl residues appear on opposite sides of the mol-ecule. The fluorene ring systems subtend dihedral angles of 31.37 (4) and 43.18 (3)° in mol-ecules A and B, respectively. Hence the two fluorene moieties are tilted slightly toward one another. This may be due to the presence of inter-molecular C-H⋯π inter-actions between neighboring mol-ecules. The lateral ethyl chains (excluding H atoms) are also almost planar, with each pair almost perpendicular to the plane of the fluorene system to which they are attached with dihedral angles between the ethyl and fluorene planes in the range 86.04 (8)-89.5 (1)°.

Project description:The title compound, C(29)H(24)Cl(2)O(2), a fluorene derivative, features a C atom that is connected to four phenyl-ene rings, two of which are almost coplanar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.035 Å) as they belong to the fluorene system. The other two rings are aligned at angles of 67.5 (5) and 85.5 (5)° with respect to the pair. The O and Cl atoms of the -OCH(2)CH(2)Cl- units adopt a gauche conformation [torsion angles = 61.6 (6) and 66.6 (5)°].

The two benzene rings are twisted with respect to the fluorene ring system at dihedral angles of 72.81 (6) and 81.83 (6)°. One C(ar-yl)-O-C-C fragment is extended, with a C-O-C-C torsion angle of -178.77 (13)°, but the other C(ar-yl)-O-C-C fragment is bent, with a C-O-C-C torsion angle of 64.78 (19)°. Inter-molecular weak C-H⋯O hydrogen bonding is present in the crystal structure.

The three-dimensional architecture is consolidated by C-H⋯π inter-actions. The four-atom -O-CH(2)-C(=O)-O- chain between the p-phenyl-ene ring and the tert-butyl group assumes a more regular W-shaped conformation for one substituent [O-C-C-C torsion angle = 171.9 (2)°] but a less regular W-shaped conformation for the other [torsion angle = 147.4 (2)°].
