Metal-ligand multiple bonds as frustrated Lewis pairs for C-H functionalization.

ABSTRACT: The concept of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) has received considerable attention of late, and numerous reports have demonstrated the power of non- or weakly interacting Lewis acid-base pairs for the cooperative activation of small molecules. Although most studies have focused on the use of organic or main-group FLPs that utilize steric encumbrance to prevent adduct formation, a related strategy can be envisioned for both organic and inorganic complexes, in which "electronic frustration" engenders reactivity consistent with both nucleophilic (basic) and electrophilic (acidic) character. Here we propose that such a description is consistent with the behavior of many coordinatively unsaturated transition-metal species featuring metal-ligand multiple bonds, and we further demonstrate that the resultant reactivity may be a powerful tool for the functionalization of C-H and E-H bonds.

Project description:Metal ligand cooperativity (MLC) and frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chemistry both feature the cooperative action of a Lewis acidic and a Lewis basic site on a substrate. A lot of work has been carried out in the field of FLPs to prevent Lewis adduct formation, which often reduces the FLP reactivity. Parallels are drawn between the two systems by looking at their reactivity with CO2, and we explore the role of steric bulk in preventing dimer formation in MLC systems.

Unraveling Reactivity Pathways: Dihydrogen Activation and Hydrogenation of Multiple Bonds by Pyramidalized Boron-Based Frustrated Lewis Pairs.

Project description:The activation of H2 by pyramidalized boron-based frustrated Lewis Pairs (FLPs) (B/E-FLP systems where "E" refers to N, P, As, Sb, and Bi) have been explored using density functional theory (DFT) based computational study. The activation pathway for the entire process is accurately characterized through the utilization of the activation strain model (ASM) of reactivity, shedding light on the underlying physical factors governing the process. The study also explores the hydrogenation process of multiple bonds with the help of B/N-FLP. The research findings demonstrate that the liberation of activated dihydrogen occurs in a synchronized, albeit noticeably asynchronous, fashion. The transformation is extensively elucidated using the activation strain model and the energy decomposition analysis. This approach suggests a co-operative double hydrogen-transfer mechanism, where the B-H hydride triggers a nucleophilic attack on the carbon atom of the multiple bonds, succeeded by the migration of the protic N-H.

Metal-free electrocatalytic hydrogen oxidation using frustrated Lewis pairs and carbon-based Lewis acids.

Project description:Whilst hydrogen is a potentially clean fuel for energy storage and utilisation technologies, its conversion to electricity comes at a high energetic cost. This demands the use of rare and expensive precious metal electrocatalysts. Electrochemical-frustrated Lewis pairs offer a metal-free, CO tolerant pathway to the electrocatalysis of hydrogen oxidation. They function by combining the hydrogen-activating ability of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) with electrochemical oxidation of the resultant hydride. Here we present an electrochemical-FLP approach that utilises two different Lewis acids - a carbon-based N-methylacridinium cation that possesses excellent electrochemical attributes, and a borane that exhibits fast hydrogen cleavage kinetics and functions as a "hydride shuttle". This synergistic interaction provides a system that is electrocatalytic with respect to the carbon-based Lewis acid, decreases the required potential for hydrogen oxidation by 1 V, and can be recycled multiple times.

Reactions of Frustrated Lewis Pairs with Chloro-Diazirines: Cleavage of N=N Double Bonds.

Project description:The reactions of FLPs with diazomethanes leads to the rapid loss of N2 . In contrast, in this work, we reported reactions of phosphine/borane FLPs with chlorodiazirines which led to the reduction of the N=N double bond, affording linked phosphinimide/amidoborate zwitterions of the general form R3 PNC(Ar)NR'BX(C6 F5 )2 . A detailed DFT mechanistic study showed that these reactions proceed via FLP addition to the N=N bond, followed by subsequent group transfer reactions to nitrogen and capture of the halide anion.

An electrochemical study of frustrated Lewis pairs: a metal-free route to hydrogen oxidation.

Project description:Frustrated Lewis pairs have found many applications in the heterolytic activation of H2 and subsequent hydrogenation of small molecules through delivery of the resulting proton and hydride equivalents. Herein, we describe how H2 can be preactivated using classical frustrated Lewis pair chemistry and combined with in situ nonaqueous electrochemical oxidation of the resulting borohydride. Our approach allows hydrogen to be cleanly converted into two protons and two electrons in situ, and reduces the potential (the required energetic driving force) for nonaqueous H2 oxidation by 610 mV (117.7 kJ mol(-1)). This significant energy reduction opens routes to the development of nonaqueous hydrogen energy technology.

Reactions of Diethylazo-Dicarboxylate with Frustrated Lewis Pairs.

Project description:Reactions of PAr3 /B(C6 F5 )3 (Ar=o-Tol, Mes, Ph) FLPs with diethyl azodicarboxylate (DEAD) afford the corresponding FLP addition products 1-3 in which P-N and B-O linkages are formed. In contrast, the reaction of BPh3 , PPh3 and DEAD gave product 4 where P-N and N-B linkages were confirmed. In all cases, other binding modes were computed to be both higher in energy and readily distinguishable by 31 P and 11 B NMR parameters. These data illustrate the influence of steric demands and electronic structures on the nature of the products of FLP reactions with DEAD.

Regioselective aliphatic C-H functionalization using frustrated radical pairs.

Project description:Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) are well documented for the activation of small molecules such as dihydrogen and carbon dioxide1-4. Although canonical FLP chemistry is heterolytic in nature, recent work has shown that certain FLPs can undergo single-electron transfer to afford radical pairs5. Owing to steric encumbrance and/or weak bonding association, these radicals do not annihilate one another, and they have thus been named frustrated radical pairs (FRPs). Notable preliminary results suggest that FRPs may be useful reagents in chemical synthesis6-8, although their applications remain limited. Here we demonstrate that the functionalization of C(sp3)-H bonds can be accomplished using a class of FRPs generated from disilazide donors and an N-oxoammonium acceptor. Together, these species undergo single-electron transfer to generate a transient and persistent radical pair capable of cleaving unactivated C-H bonds to furnish aminoxylated products. By tuning the structure of the donor, it is possible to control regioselectivity and tailor reactivity towards tertiary, secondary or primary C-H bonds. Mechanistic studies lend strong support for the formation and involvement of radical pairs in the target reaction.

Theoretical Characterization of New Frustrated Lewis Pairs for Responsive Materials.

Project description:In recent years, responsive materials including dynamic bonds have been widely acclaimed due to their expectation to pilot advanced materials. Within these materials, synthetic polymers have shown to be good candidates. Recently, the so-called frustrated Lewis pairs (FLP) have been used to create responsive materials. Concretely, the activation of diethyl azodicarboxylate (DEAD) by a triphenylborane (TPB) and triphenylphosphine (TPP) based FLP has been recently exploited for the production of dynamic cross-links. In this work, we computationally explore the underlying dynamic chemistry in these materials, in order to understand the nature and reversibility of the interaction between the FLP and DEAD. With this goal in mind, we first characterize the acidity and basicity of several TPB and TPP derivatives using different substituents, such as electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups. Our results show that strong electron-donating groups increase the acidity of TPB and decrease the basicity of TPP. However, the FLP-DEAD interaction is not mainly dominated by the influence of these substituents in the acidity or basicity of the TPB or TPP systems, but by attractive or repulsive forces between substituents such as hydrogen bonds or steric effects. Based on these results, a new material is proposed based on FLP-DEAD complexes.

Exploiting the Electronic Tuneability of Carboranes as Supports for Frustrated Lewis Pairs.

Project description:The first example of a carborane with a catecholborolyl substituent, [1-Bcat-2-Ph-closo-1,2-C₂B10H10] (1), has been prepared and characterized and shown to act as the Lewis acid component of an intermolecular frustrated Lewis pair in catalyzing a Michael addition. In combination with B(C₆F₅)₃ the C-carboranylphosphine [1-PPh₂-closo-1,2-C₂B10H11] (IVa) is found to be comparable with PPh₂(C₆F₅) in its ability to catalyze hydrosilylation, whilst the more strongly basic B-carboranylphosphine [9-PPh₂-closo-1,7-C₂B10H11] (V) is less effective and the very weakly basic species [μ-2,2'-PPh-{1-(1'-1',2'-closo-C₂B10H10)-1,2-closo-C₂B10H10}] (IX) is completely ineffective. Base strengths are rank-ordered via measurement of the ¹J31P-77Se coupling constants of the phosphineselenides [1-SePPh₂-closo-1,2-C₂B10H11] (2), [9-SePPh₂-closo-1,7-C₂B10H11] (3), and [SePPh₂(C₆F₅)] (4).
