Project description:Bi2Te3, as a topological insulator, is able to support plasmonic emission in the visible spectral range. Thin Bi2Te3 flakes can be exfoliated directly from a Bi2Te3 crystal, and the shape of Bi2Te3 flakes can be further modified by focused ion beam milling. Therefore, we have designed a Bi2Te3 triangular antenna with distinct tip angles for the application of plasmonic resonance. The plasmonic emission of the Bi2Te3 triangular antenna is excited and investigated by cathodoluminescence in the scanning electron microscope. Enhanced tip plasmons have been observed from distinct tips with angles of 20º, 36º, 54º, 70º, and 90º, respectively. Due to the confinement of geometric boundaries for oscillating charges, the resonant peak position of tip plasmon with a smaller angle has a blue shift. Moreover, the dependence of plasmonic behavior on the excitation position has been discovered as well. This research provides a unique approach to fabricate Bi2Te3 nanostructures and manipulate the corresponding plasmonic properties.

Project description:Due to the competitive growth on the crystal face of seed, it is always difficult to control the morphology of the formation of nanoparticles precisely by a seed-mediated growth method. Herein, we provided a simple but effective technique to synthesize silver nanotriangles using a new silver seed that is capped with citrate-CTA+ (CTA+ is cetyltrimethyl ammonium cation). Compared to the preparation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by a conventional seed-mediated method, in this paper, we presented a growth technique with two distinct innovative changes. First, the concentrations of CTAB that we added in silver seed collosol have a significant impact on the size distribution, and silver nanotriangles, nanorods, and nanospheres could be obtained by adjusting the CTAB concentration. Second, the seed prepared by our method has a longer use time, and silver nanotriangles, nanospheres, and nanorods could be prepared by adjusting the aged time of the seed colloid. We have also shown a simple way to control the morphology of silver nanoparticles in almost the same reactive medium by varying the NaOH concentration. Using the new silver seed capped with citrate-CTA+, we obtained triangular silver nanoparticles with relatively high regularity. Based on the limited experimental results and IR analysis, a possible mechanism was preliminarily proposed to explain the formation of the seed and the truncated triangular AgNPs.

Project description:This article presents a mechanistic study of the photomediated growth of silver nanoprisms. The data show that the photochemical process is driven by silver redox cycles involving reduction of silver cations by citrate on the silver particle surface and oxidative dissolution of small silver particles by O2. Bis(p-sulfonatophenyl)phenylphosphine increases the solubility of the Ag(+) by complexing it and acts as a buffer to keep the concentration of Ag(+) at 20 microM. The silver particles serve as photocatalysts and, under plasmon excitation, facilitate Ag(+) reduction by citrate. Higher Ag(+) concentrations favor a competitive thermal process, which results in increased prism thickness.

Project description:The production of colloidal metal nanostructures with complex geometries usually involves shape-directing additives, such as metal ions or thiols, which stabilize high-index facets. These additives may however affect the nanoparticles' surface chemistry, hindering applications, e.g., in biology or catalysis. We report herein the preparation of gold bipyramids with no need for additives and shape yields up to 99%, using pentatwinned Au nanorods as seeds and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride as surfactant. For high-growth solution:seed ratios, the bipyramids exhibit an unusual "belted" structure. Three-dimensional electron microscopy revealed the presence of high-index {117}, {115}, and {113} side facets, with {113} and {112} facets at the belt. Belted bipyramids exhibit strong near-field enhancement and high extinction in the near-infrared, in agreement with electromagnetic simulations. These Ag-free bipyramids were used to seed chiral overgrowth using 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diamine as a chiral inducer, with g-factor up to 0.02, likely the highest reported for bipyramid seeds so far.

Project description:This study marks the first ever attempt at the successful fabrication of a novel reactive membrane to combat fouling through layer-by-layer (LBL) surface modification with polyelectrolyte (PE), followed by anisotropic triangular silver nanoparticles (TSNP). The morphology and the presence of TSNP on the membrane was confirmed by HR-TEM, FE-SEM and XPS. The charge density of the novel membrane (PE-TSNP) was increased 15.6 fold, as a result of the sharp-tip morphology of the TSNP forming tip-based "hot spots" on the membrane surface and high-atom-density active facets, which also enhanced the membrane hydrophilicity by 36%. Owing to these improved features, the novel membrane displayed remarkable antibacterial and anti-adhesion properties by achieving 100% bactericidal effect against high initial bacterial concentration (107 CFU mL-1). The membrane flux was improved by 31% while retaining a high flux recovery rate of 98.2% against biofouling. The membrane also mitigated organic and bio-organic fouling by maintaining high flux recovery rates of 96% and 95% respectively. As compared with a spherical silver nanoparticle modified membrane (PE-SSNP), the PE-TSNP membrane was 25.7% more hydrophilic and achieved 10% higher bacterial killing. Moreover, the novel membrane displayed 9.5%, 11.6%, and 14% higher flux recovery rates than that of the PE-SSNP membrane against biofouling, organic and bio-organic fouling respectively. Furthermore, the novel membrane retained a long-term biocidal capability of 93% even after 4 months of successive tests. ICP-MS revealed silver ion leaching of 4 μg L-1 and the total silver loss of 14% from the PE-TSNP membrane after 14 days.

Project description:The emergence of antibiotic resistance makes the therapeutic effect of traditional antibiotics far from satisfactory. Here, chiral gold nano-bipyramids (GBPs) with sea cucumber-like morphology are reported, and used in the fight against bacterial infection. Specifically, the dipeptide of d-/l-Cys-Phe (CF) caused the nano-bipyramids to form a spike shape with an optical anisotropy factor of 0.102 at 573 nm. The antibacterial effects showed that d-GBPs and l-GBPs could efficiently destroy bacteria with a death ratio of 98% and 70% in vitro. Also, both in vivo skin infection and sepsis models showed that the chiral GBPs could effectively promote wound healing and prevent sepsis in mice. Mechanistic studies showed that the binding affinity of d-GBPs (1.071 ± 0.023 × 108 M-1) was 12.39-fold higher than l-GBPs (8.664 ± 0.251 × 106 M-1) to protein A of Staphylococcus aureus, which caused further adsorption of d-GBPs onto the bacterial surface. Moreover, the physical destruction of the bacterial cell wall caused by the spike chiral GBPs, resulted in a stronger antibacterial effect for d-GBPs than l-GBPs. Furthermore, the excellent PTT of d-/l-GBPs further exacerbated the death of bacteria without any side-effect. Overall, chiral nano-bipyramids have opened a new avenue for improved antibacterial efficacy in the treatment of bacterial infections.

Project description:Plasmon resonances of metal nanocrystals resulted from free electrons oscillating around nanocrystals, leading to a strong electromagnetic field around them. Because these oscillating electrons possess higher energy than the original ones, also known as hot electrons, these were widely used as photocatalysts for various reactions. Also, the strength and distribution of the electromagnetic field around the nanocrystals strongly depended on their morphology and excited irradiation, which led to the reaction environment around nanocrystals being controllable. Here, we integrated the seed-mediated and plasmon-mediated photochemistry methods for fabricating bimetallic and semiconductor-metal nanocrystals with controllable morphologies and compositions of the nanocrystals, resulting from the highly anisotropic reaction environment around the nanocrystals. The highly anisotropic reaction environment around the template nanocrystal was caused by the distribution of electromagnetic fields around it and its exposure area in the reaction solution. This new synthesis method should enable the fabrication of various multicomponent nanocrystals with desirable functions for potential applications, such as photocatalysts, chemical sensors, biosensors, biomedicines, etc.

Project description:Plasmon-mediated shape transformation from quasi-spherical silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to silver nanoprisms (AgNPrs) and decahedral silver nanoparticles (D-AgNPs) under irradiation of blue LEDs (λ = 456 ± 12 nm, 80 mW/cm2) was studied at temperatures ranging between 60, 40, 30, 20, 10, and 0 °C. It was found that reaction temperature affected transformation rates and influenced the morphology distribution of final products. The major products synthesized at temperatures between 60 °C and 0 °C were AgNPrs and D-AgNPs, respectively. The D-AgNPs synthesized at such low temperatures are unstable and become blunt when light irradiation is removed after the photochemical synthesis. These blunt nanoparticles with pentagonal multiple-twinned structures can be further used as the seeds to reconstruct complete D-AgNPs after irradiating blue LEDs at various bath temperatures. Our results showed that these rebuilt D-AgNPs are much more stable when at higher bath temperatures. Furthermore, the rebuilt D-AgNPs (edge lengths ~41 nm) can grow into larger D-AgNPs (edge lengths ~53 nm) after the irradiation of green LEDs. Surface-enhanced Raman spectra of CV in AgNP colloids showed that D-AgNP colloids have better SERS enhancements factors than AgNPrs.

Project description:Nanotechnology offers new possibilities in molecular diagnostics, with nanoparticles gaining attention as biosensor upgrades. This study evaluates gold-coated silver nanoplates coated with PEG for enhanced protection, aiming to detect Spike protein with higher sensitivity, and emphasizes the importance of considering complex environments and appropriate controls for specific binding and accurate analysis. The sensitivity of antibody-coated PEGAuTSNPs as tools for immunoassays is demonstrated through fibronectin (Fn)- anti-fibronectin binding within an isolated extracellular matrix as a complex and native environment of Fn. Moreover, the optimal functionalization volume of Spike protein was determined (4 µg/mL of PEGAuTSNP). Anti-Spike was added to confirm binding, while the TJP1 protein was used as a negative control. The same experiment was used in the presence of horse serum to simulate a complex environment. According to Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance analysis and Dynamic Light Scattering size measurements, anti-Spike exhibited a stronger affinity for the nanoplates, causing TJP1 to be replaced by the antibody on the nanoplates' surface. Future research will involve exploring alternative complex environments, filtering larger molecules, and the optimization of immunoassay performance.

Project description:Two-dimensional finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations were performed for evaluating optical absorption enhancement and loss effects of triangular silver (Ag) nanowires embedded in silicon (Si) thin-film photovoltaic device structures. Near-bandgap absorption enhancement in Si was much larger than the reported values of other nanostructures from similar simulations. A nanowire with equal sides of 20 nm length showed 368-fold absorption enhancement whereas only 5× and 15× values of solid spherical and two-dimensional core-shell type nanostructures, respectively. Undesirable absorption loss in the metal of the nanowire was 3.55× larger than the absorption in Si which was comparable to the value reported for the spherical nanoparticle. Interestingly, as the height of the nanowire was increased to form a sharper tip, absorption loss showed a significant drop. For a nanowire with 20 nm base and 20 nm height, absorption loss was merely 1.91× larger than the absorption in Si at the 840 nm plasmon resonance. This drop could be attributed to weaker plasmon resonance manifested by lower metallic absorption in the spatial absorption map of the nanowire. However, absorption enhancement in Si was still large due to strong plasmonic fields at the sharper and longer tip, which was effective in enhancing absorption over a larger area in Si. Our work shows that the shape of a nanostructure and its optimization can significantly affect plasmonic absorption enhancement and loss performance in photovoltaic applications.
