Project description:Aeolian sediment transport is observed to occur on Mars as well as other extraterrestrial environments, generating ripples and dunes as on Earth. The search for terrestrial analogs of planetary bedforms, as well as environmental simulation experiments able to reproduce their formation in planetary conditions, are powerful ways to question our understanding of geomorphological processes toward unusual environmental conditions. Here, we perform sediment transport laboratory experiments in a closed-circuit wind tunnel placed in a vacuum chamber and operated at extremely low pressures to show that Martian conditions belong to a previously unexplored saltation regime. The threshold wind speed required to initiate saltation is only quantitatively predicted by state-of-the art models up to a density ratio between grain and air of [Formula: see text] but unexpectedly falls to much lower values for higher density ratios. In contrast, impact ripples, whose emergence is continuously observed on the granular bed over the whole pressure range investigated, display a characteristic wavelength and propagation velocity essentially independent of pressure. A comparison of these findings with existing models suggests that sediment transport at low Reynolds number but high grain-to-fluid density ratio may be dominated by collective effects associated with grain inertia in the granular collisional layer.

Project description:Background/objectivesArtificial intelligence can assist with ocular image analysis for screening and diagnosis, but it is not yet capable of autonomous full-spectrum screening. Hypothetically, false-positive results may have unrealized screening potential arising from signals persisting despite training and/or ambiguous signals such as from biomarker overlap or high comorbidity. The study aimed to explore the potential to detect clinically useful incidental ocular biomarkers by screening fundus photographs of hypertensive adults using diabetic deep learning algorithms.Subjects/methodsPatients referred for treatment-resistant hypertension were imaged at a hospital unit in Perth, Australia, between 2016 and 2022. The same 45° colour fundus photograph selected for each of the 433 participants imaged was processed by three deep learning algorithms. Two expert retinal specialists graded all false-positive results for diabetic retinopathy in non-diabetic participants.ResultsOf the 29 non-diabetic participants misclassified as positive for diabetic retinopathy, 28 (97%) had clinically useful retinal biomarkers. The models designed to screen for fewer diseases captured more incidental disease. All three algorithms showed a positive correlation between severity of hypertensive retinopathy and misclassified diabetic retinopathy.ConclusionsThe results suggest that diabetic deep learning models may be responsive to hypertensive and other clinically useful retinal biomarkers within an at-risk, hypertensive cohort. Observing that models trained for fewer diseases captured more incidental pathology increases confidence in signalling hypotheses aligned with using self-supervised learning to develop autonomous comprehensive screening. Meanwhile, non-referable and false-positive outputs of other deep learning screening models could be explored for immediate clinical use in other populations.

Project description:The goals of this study is to compare the differently expressed genes in abdominal aorta tissue of WKY and SHR as well as differently expressed genes in the abdominal aorta tissue of SHR with or without neferine treatment. The rat (n=15) were randomly divided into 3 groups: WKY,SHR, and SHR + neferine - H (high concentration) groups (n=6 for each group). Rat in WKY and SHR groups were intragastrically with double distilled water (dd H2O); while rat in SHR + SHR + neferine - H groups were intragastrically with 10mg/kg/D of neferine for 10 weeks. Then the abdominal aorta were used to identify differentially expressed genes among different groups.

Project description:BackgroundThe optimal control thresholds for systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in patients with white matter hyperintensity (WMH) are still unclear.MethodA longitudinal retrospective study of patients with brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans with intervals of more than 3 years was conducted. Blood pressure records during hospitalization and from outpatient visits between baseline and the last MRI scan were collected. The outcome was the change in total WMH from baseline to the final visit.ResultsAmong the 965 patients with MRI scans, 457 patients with detailed longitudinal blood pressure records were ultimately included and classified into the WMH absent group (n = 121), mild WMH group (n = 126), and moderate to severe WMH group (n = 210). Both baseline and longitudinal mean SBP, DBP, and SBP SD were significantly associated with WMH severity (p < 0.05). An average SBP of 130-140 mmHg [vs. <130 mmHg, aOR, 1.80, (95% CI, 1.05-3.07), p = 0.03] was associated with a higher risk of WMH progression. DBP ≥ 90 mmHg [vs. <80 mmHg, OR, 1.81, (95% CI, 0.88-3.74), p = 0.02, aOR, 1.54, (95% CI, 0.66-3.53), p = 0.32] was associated with a higher risk of WMH progression, but was not after adjusted for other covariates. Longitudinal BP variability was not significantly associated with WMH progression.ConclusionBoth SBP and DBP had a stronger relationship with the severity of WMH. A target mean SBP of <130 mmHg and mean DBP of <80 mmHg was associated with a lower risk of WMH progression.

Project description:A multi-functional optical coherence tomography (OCT) approach is presented to determine ocular fundus pulsations as an axial displacement between the retina and the chorioscleral complex in the albino rat eye. By combining optical coherence elastography and OCT angiography (OCTA), we measure subtle deformations in the nanometer range within the eye and simultaneously map retinal and choroidal perfusion. The conventional OCT reflectivity contrast serves as a backbone to segment the retina and to define several slabs which are subsequently used for quantitative ocular pulsation measurements as well as for a qualitative exploration of the multi-functional OCT image data. The proposed concept is applied in healthy albino rats as well as in rats under acute elevation of the intraocular pressure (IOP). The evaluation of this experiment revealed an increased pulsatility and deformation between the retinal and chorioscleral complex while increasing the IOP level from 15 mmHg to 65 mmHg. At IOP levels exceeding 65 mmHg, the pulsatility decreased significantly and retinal as well as choroidal perfusion vanished in OCTA. Furthermore, the evaluation of the multi-parametric experiment revealed a spatial correlation between fundus pulsatility and choroidal blood flow. This indicates that the assessed pulsatility may be a valuable parameter describing the choroidal perfusion.

Project description:Disease mechanism underlying glaucoma remains unclear. Extensive research on this pathology has highlighted changes in vascular parameters and in circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Here, we review the most recent research on alterations in ocular blood flow and/or CSF flow in glaucoma. Ultrasound Doppler imaging studies have shown an increased resistive index in ophthalmic artery's in glaucoma. Furthermore, changes in optic nerve CSF circulation, which can be assessed with magnetic resonance imaging, may lead to a greater translaminar pressure difference, mechanical stress, and poor clearance of toxic substances. This constitutes a new approach for understanding blood-CSF interactions involved in glaucoma.
