Spiral patterns of dislocations at nodes in (111) semi-coherent FCC interfaces.

ABSTRACT: In semi-coherent interface, a superposed network of interface dislocations accommodates the attendant coherency strains in the adjacent crystals and their intersections (referred to as nodes) can act as sinks and sources for point defects because of the low formation energy. Nodes in {111} semi-coherent interfaces are characterized with a spiral pattern (SP), wherein the line direction of each dislocation entering a node curves. The structure of SP nodes is able to switch between condensed and expanded by either reaction with point defects or mechanical deformation. Due to the switching of the node structures, point defect formation energies at nodes can be significantly reduced. Combining atomistic simulation and dislocation theory, these features are proven universal corresponding to the node density and the character of interface dislocations.

Massive interfacial reconstruction at misfit dislocations in metal/oxide interfaces.

Project description:Electronic structure calculations were performed to study the role of misfit dislocations on the structure and chemistry of a metal/oxide interface. We found that a chemical imbalance exists at the misfit dislocation which leads to dramatic changes in the point defect content at the interface - stabilizing the structure requires removing as much as 50% of the metal atoms and insertion of a large number of oxygen interstitials. The exact defect composition that stabilizes the interface is sensitive to the external oxygen partial pressure. We relate the preferred defect structure at the interface to a competition between chemical and strain energies as defects are introduced.

One-pot construction of robust BiOCl/ZnO p-n heterojunctions with semi-coherent interfaces toward improving charge separation for photodegradation enhancement.

Project description:Heterojunction engineering is an effective strategy to enhance the photodegradation activity via improving the spatial charge separation. However, the poor interface interactions and stability limit the photocatalytic activity and stability of traditional heterojunctions. Herein, robust BiOCl/ZnO p-n heterojunctions with semi-coherent interfaces were prepared by a one-pot hydrothermal method to improve the activity and stability toward photocatalytic degradation than that of the counterpart, in which the semi-coherent interfaces exhibited lower phase boundary energy, resulting in highly-stable interfaces between BiOCl and ZnO as well as the formation of the built-in electric field in this robust p-n heterojunction for enhanced charge separation. The cycle test results verified that the BiOCl/ZnO heterojunctions with semi-coherent interfaces can maintain the photocatalytic degradation activity at the initial level even after 10 cycles, while deactivation of the sample without semi-coherent interfaces occurred after 3 cycles only. Optical and electrical properties revealed that BiOCl/ZnO heterojunctions with semi-coherent interfaces possessed the highest electron migration and charge separation efficiency, resulting in the highest photodegradation activity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electron spin-resonance (ESR) results verified that the enhanced charge separation was assigned to the type-II photocatalytic mechanism, leading to the enhancement of ˙OH and ˙O2 - reactive oxygen species. This work would provoke the development of one-step construction of new highly active BiOX (X = Cl, Br, and I)-based heterogeneous photocatalysts with stable semi-coherent interfaces.

Polar Spinel-Perovskite Interfaces: an atomistic study of Fe3O4(111)/SrTiO3(111) structure and functionality.

Project description:Atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy combined with ab initio electronic calculations are used to determine the structure and properties of the Fe3O4(111)/SrTiO3(111) polar interface. The interfacial structure and chemical composition are shown to be atomically sharp and of an octahedral Fe/SrO3 nature. Band alignment across the interface pins the Fermi level in the vicinity of the conduction band of SrTiO3. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate very high spin-polarization of Fe3O4 in the interface vicinity which suggests that this system may be an excellent candidate for spintronic applications.

Anisotropic superconductivity at KTaO<sub>3</sub>(111) interfaces.

Project description:A two-dimensional, anisotropic superconductivity was recently found at the KTaO3(111) interfaces. The nature of the anisotropic superconducting transition remains a subject of debate. To investigate the origins of the observed behavior, we grew epitaxial KTaO3(111)-based heterostructures. We show that the superconductivity is robust against the in-plane magnetic field and violates the Pauli limit. We also show that the Cooper pairs are more resilient when the bias is along [11[Formula: see text]] (I ∥ [11[Formula: see text]]) and the magnetic field is along [1[Formula: see text]0] (B ∥ [1[Formula: see text]0]). We discuss the anisotropic nature of superconductivity in the context of electronic structure, orbital character, and spin texture at the KTaO3(111) interfaces. The results point to future opportunities to enhance superconducting transition temperatures and critical fields in crystalline, two-dimensional superconductors with strong spin-orbit coupling.

Coherent interfaces govern direct transformation from graphite to diamond.

Project description:Understanding the direct transformation from graphite to diamond has been a long-standing challenge with great scientific and practical importance. Previously proposed transformation mechanisms1-3, based on traditional experimental observations that lacked atomistic resolution, cannot account for the complex nanostructures occurring at graphite-diamond interfaces during the transformation4,5. Here we report the identification of coherent graphite-diamond interfaces, which consist of four basic structural motifs, in partially transformed graphite samples recovered from static compression, using high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy. These observations provide insight into possible pathways of the transformation. Theoretical calculations confirm that transformation through these coherent interfaces is energetically favoured compared with those through other paths previously proposed1-3. The graphite-to-diamond transformation is governed by the formation of nanoscale coherent interfaces (diamond nucleation), which, under static compression, advance to consume the remaining graphite (diamond growth). These results may also shed light on transformation mechanisms of other carbon materials and boron nitride under different synthetic conditions.

Project description:The data illustrates the process of creation of dislocation quadrupoles in FCC Al. The density of dislocations in our data is 3.8 × 1013 m-2 which is the lowest published to date and is comparable to the density of dislocations in real crystals. High mobility conduction at (110) and (111) LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces.

Project description:In recent years, striking discoveries have revealed that two-dimensional electron liquids (2DEL) confined at the interface between oxide band-insulators can be engineered to display a high mobility transport. The recognition that only few interfaces appear to suit hosting 2DEL is intriguing and challenges the understanding of these emerging properties not existing in bulk. Indeed, only the neutral TiO(2) surface of (001)SrTiO(3) has been shown to sustain 2DEL. We show that this restriction can be surpassed: (110) and (111) surfaces of SrTiO(3) interfaced with epitaxial LaAlO(3) layers, above a critical thickness, display 2DEL transport with mobilities similar to those of (001)SrTiO(3). Moreover we show that epitaxial interfaces are not a prerequisite: conducting (110) interfaces with amorphous LaAlO(3) and other oxides can also be prepared. These findings open a new perspective both for materials research and for elucidating the ultimate microscopic mechanism of carrier doping.

Hydrogen-induced change in core structures of {110}[111] edge and {110}[111] screw dislocations in iron.

Project description:Employing the empirical embedded-atom method potentials, the evolution of edge and screw dislocation core structure is calculated at different hydrogen concentrations. With hydrogen, the core energy and Peierls potential are reduced for all dislocations. A broaden-core and a quasi-split core structure are observed for edge and screw dislocation respectively. The screw dislocation and hydrogen interaction in body-centred cubic iron is found to be not mainly due to the change of elastic modulus, but the variation of dislocation core structure.

Quantum networks with coherent routing of information through multiple nodes.

Project description:Large-scale communication networks, such as the Internet, rely on routing packets of data through multiple intermediate nodes to transmit information from a sender to a receiver. In this paper, we develop a model of a quantum communication network that routes information simultaneously along multiple paths passing through intermediate stations. We demonstrate that a quantum routing approach can in principle extend the distance over which information can be transmitted reliably. Surprisingly, the benefit of quantum routing also applies to the transmission of classical information: even if the transmitted data is purely classical, delocalising it on multiple routes can enhance the achievable transmission distance. Our findings highlight the potential of a future quantum internet not only for achieving secure quantum communication and distributed quantum computing but also for extending the range of classical data transmission.

Heterophase fcc-2H-fcc gold nanorods.

Project description:The crystal phase-based heterostructures of noble metal nanomaterials are of great research interest for various applications, such as plasmonics and catalysis. However, the synthesis of unusual crystal phases of noble metals still remains a great challenge, making the construction of heterophase noble metal nanostructures difficult. Here, we report a one-pot wet-chemical synthesis of well-defined heterophase fcc-2H-fcc gold nanorods (fcc: face-centred cubic; 2H: hexagonal close-packed with stacking sequence of "AB") at mild conditions. Single particle-level experiments and theoretical investigations reveal that the heterophase gold nanorods demonstrate a distinct optical property compared to that of the conventional fcc gold nanorods. Moreover, the heterophase gold nanorods possess superior electrocatalytic activity for the carbon dioxide reduction reaction over their fcc counterparts under ambient conditions. First-principles calculations suggest that the boosted catalytic performance stems from the energetically favourable adsorption of reaction intermediates, endowed by the unique heterophase characteristic of gold nanorods.
