An experimental proposal for revealing contextuality in almost all qutrit states.

ABSTRACT: Contextuality is a foundational phenomenon underlying key differences between quantum theory and classical realistic descriptions of the world. Here we propose an experimental test which is capable of revealing contextuality in all qutrit systems, except the completely mixed state, provided we choose the measurement basis appropriately. The 3-level system is furnished by the polarization and spatial degrees of freedom of a single photon, which encompass three orthogonal modes. Projective measurements along rays in the 3-dimensional Hilbert space are made by linear optical elements and detectors which are sensitive to single mode. We also discuss the impact of detector inefficiency and losses and review the theoretical foundations of this test.

Revealing universal quantum contextuality through communication games.

Project description:An ontological model of an operational theory is considered to be universally noncontextual if both preparation and measurement noncontextuality assumptions are satisfied in that model. In this report, we first generalize the logical proofs of quantum preparation and measurement contextuality for qubit system for any odd number of preparations and measurements. Based on the logical proof, we derive testable universally non-contextual inequalities violated by quantum theory. We then propose a class of two-party communication games and show that the average success probability of winning such games is solely linked to suitable Bell expression whose local bound is greater than universal non-contextual bound. Thus, for a given state, even if quantum theory does not exhibit non-locality, it may still reveal non-classicality by violating the universal non-contextual bound. Further, we consider a different communication game to demonstrate that for a given choices of observables in quantum theory, even if there is no logical proof of preparation and measurement contextuality exist, the universal quantum contextuality can be revealed through that communication game. Such a game thus test a weaker form of universal non-contextuality with minimal assumption.

Experimental certification of random numbers via quantum contextuality.

Project description:The intrinsic unpredictability of measurements in quantum mechanics can be used to produce genuine randomness. Here, we demonstrate a random number generator where the randomness is certified by quantum contextuality in connection with the Kochen-Specker theorem. In particular, we generate random numbers from measurements on a single trapped ion with three internal levels, and certify the generated randomness by showing a bound on the minimum entropy through observation of violation of the Klyachko-Can-Binicioglu-Shumovsky (KCBS) inequality. Concerning the test of the KCBS inequality, we close the detection efficiency loophole for the first time and make it relatively immune to the compatibility loophole. In our experiment, we generate 1 × 10(5) random numbers that are guaranteed to have 5.2 × 10(4) bits of minimum entropy with a 99% confidence level.

Experimental certification of contextuality, coherence, and dimension in a programmable universal photonic processor.

Project description:Quantum superposition of high-dimensional states enables both computational speed-up and security in cryptographic protocols. However, the exponential complexity of tomographic processes makes certification of these properties a challenging task. In this work, we experimentally certify coherence witnesses tailored for quantum systems of increasing dimension using pairwise overlap measurements enabled by a six-mode universal photonic processor fabricated with a femtosecond laser writing technology. In particular, we show the effectiveness of the proposed coherence and dimension witnesses for qudits of dimensions up to 5. We also demonstrate advantage in a quantum interrogation task and show it is fueled by quantum contextuality. Our experimental results testify to the efficiency of this approach for the certification of quantum properties in programmable integrated photonic platforms.

Generalized Fock space and contextuality.

Project description:This paper is devoted to linear space representations of contextual probabilities-in generalized Fock space. This gives the possibility to use the calculus of creation and annihilation operators to express probabilistic dynamics in the Fock space (in particular, the wide class of classical kinetic equations). In this way, we reproduce the Doi-Peliti formalism. The context-dependence of probabilities can be quantified with the aid of the generalized formula of total probability-by the magnitude of the interference term. Entanglement monogamy in three qutrit systems.

Project description:By introducing an arbitrary-dimensional multipartite entanglement measure, which is defined in terms of the reduced density matrices corresponding to all possible two partitions of the entire system, we prove that multipartite entanglement cannot be freely shared among the parties in both n-qubit systems and three-qutrit systems. Furthermore, our result implies that the satisfaction of the entanglement monogamy is related to the number of particles in the quantum system. As an application of three-qutrit monogamy inequality, we give a condition for the separability of a class of two-qutrit mixed states in a 3 ⊗ 3 system.

Contextuality in canonical systems of random variables.

Project description:Random variables representing measurements, broadly understood to include any responses to any inputs, form a system in which each of them is uniquely identified by its content (that which it measures) and its context (the conditions under which it is recorded). Two random variables are jointly distributed if and only if they share a context. In a canonical representation of a system, all random variables are binary, and every content-sharing pair of random variables has a unique maximal coupling (the joint distribution imposed on them so that they coincide with maximal possible probability). The system is contextual if these maximal couplings are incompatible with the joint distributions of the context-sharing random variables. We propose to represent any system of measurements in a canonical form and to consider the system contextual if and only if its canonical representation is contextual. As an illustration, we establish a criterion for contextuality of the canonical system consisting of all dichotomizations of a single pair of content-sharing categorical random variables.This article is part of the themed issue 'Second quantum revolution: foundational questions'.

High-fidelity qutrit entangling gates for superconducting circuits.

Project description:Ternary quantum information processing in superconducting devices poses a promising alternative to its more popular binary counterpart through larger, more connected computational spaces and proposed advantages in quantum simulation and error correction. Although generally operated as qubits, transmons have readily addressable higher levels, making them natural candidates for operation as quantum three-level systems (qutrits). Recent works in transmon devices have realized high fidelity single qutrit operation. Nonetheless, effectively engineering a high-fidelity two-qutrit entanglement remains a central challenge for realizing qutrit processing in a transmon device. In this work, we apply the differential AC Stark shift to implement a flexible, microwave-activated, and dynamic cross-Kerr entanglement between two fixed-frequency transmon qutrits, expanding on work performed for the ZZ interaction with transmon qubits. We then use this interaction to engineer efficient, high-fidelity qutrit CZ† and CZ gates, with estimated process fidelities of 97.3(1)% and 95.2(3)% respectively, a significant step forward for operating qutrits on a multi-transmon device.

Characterizing unextendible product bases in qutrit-ququad system.

Project description:Unextendible product bases (UPBs) play an important role in quantum information theory. However, very little is known about UPBs in Hilbert space of local dimension more than three. In this paper, we study the UPBs in qutrit-ququad system and find that there only exist six, seven and eight-state UPBs. We completely characterize the six-state and seven-state UPBs. For eight-state UPBs, seven classes of UPBs are found. As auxiliary results, we study the distinguishability of qutrit-ququad UPBs by separable measurements, and find that there exists a UPB that cannot be distinguished.

Contextuality without nonlocality in a superconducting quantum system.

Project description:Classical realism demands that system properties exist independently of whether they are measured, while noncontextuality demands that the results of measurements do not depend on what other measurements are performed in conjunction with them. The Bell-Kochen-Specker theorem states that noncontextual realism cannot reproduce the measurement statistics of a single three-level quantum system (qutrit). Noncontextual realistic models may thus be tested using a single qutrit without relying on the notion of quantum entanglement in contrast to Bell inequality tests. It is challenging to refute such models experimentally, since imperfections may introduce loopholes that enable a realist interpretation. Here we use a superconducting qutrit with deterministic, binary-outcome readouts to violate a noncontextuality inequality while addressing the detection, individual-existence and compatibility loopholes. This evidence of state-dependent contextuality also demonstrates the fitness of superconducting quantum circuits for fault-tolerant quantum computation in surface-code architectures, currently the most promising route to scalable quantum computing.

Revealing Ultrafast Population Transfer between Nearly Degenerate Electronic States.

Project description:The response of a molecule to photoexcitation is governed by the coupling of its electronic states. However, if the energetic spacing between the electronically excited states at the Franck-Condon window becomes sufficiently small, it is infeasible to selectively excite and monitor individual states with conventional time-resolved spectroscopy, preventing insight into the energy transfer and relaxation dynamics of the molecule. Here, we demonstrate how the combination of time-resolved spectroscopy and extensive surface hopping dynamics simulations with a global fit approach on individually excited ensembles overcomes this limitation and resolves the dynamics in the n3p Rydberg states in acetone. Photoelectron transients of the three closely spaced states n3px, n3py, and n3pz are used to validate the theoretical results, which in turn allow retrieving a comprehensive kinetic model describing the mutual interactions of these states for the first time.
