Hierarchical LiFePO4 with a controllable growth of the (010) facet for lithium-ion batteries.

ABSTRACT: Hierarchically structured LiFePO4 was successfully synthesized by ionic liquid solvothermal method. These hierarchically structured LiFePO4 samples were constructed from nanostructured platelets with their (010) facets mainly exposed. To the best of our knowledge, facet control of a hierarchical LiFePO4 crystal has not been reported yet. Based on a series of experimental results, a tentative mechanism for the formation of these hierarchical structures was proposed. After these hierarchically structured LiFePO4 samples were coated with a thin carbon layer and used as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries, they exhibited excellent high-rate discharge capability and cycling stability. For instance, a capacity of 95% can be maintained for the LiFePO4 sample at a rate as high as 20 C, even after 1000 cycles.

Synthesis and Characterization of LiFePO4-PANI Hybrid Material as Cathode for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:This work focuses on the synthesis of LiFePO4-PANI hybrid materials and studies their electrochemical properties (capacity, cyclability and rate capability) for use in lithium ion batteries. PANI synthesis and optimization was carried out by chemical oxidation (self-assembly process), using ammonium persulfate (APS) and H3PO4, obtaining a material with a high degree of crystallinity. For the synthesis of the LiFePO4-PANI hybrid, a thermal treatment of LiFePO4 particles was carried out in a furnace with polyaniline (PANI) and lithium acetate (AcOLi)-coated particles, using Ar/H2 atmosphere. The pristine and synthetized powders were characterized by XRD, SEM, IR and TGA. The electrochemical characterizations were carried out by using CV, EIS and galvanostatic methods, obtaining a capacity of 95 mAhg-1 for PANI, 120 mAhg-1 for LiFePO4 and 145 mAhg-1 for LiFePO4-PANI, at a charge/discharge rate of 0.1 C. At a charge/discharge rate of 2 C, the capacities were 70 mAhg-1 for LiFePO4 and 100 mAhg-1 for LiFePO4-PANI, showing that the PANI also had a favorable effect on the rate capability.

Size controllable single-crystalline Ni-rich cathodes for high-energy lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:A single-crystalline Ni-rich (SCNR) cathode with a large particle size can achieve higher energy density, and is safer, than polycrystalline counterparts. However, synthesizing large SCNR cathodes (>5 μm) without compromising electrochemical performance is very challenging due to the incompatibility between Ni-rich cathodes and high temperature calcination. Herein, we introduce Vegard's Slope as a guide for rationally selecting sintering aids, and we successfully synthesize size-controlled SCNR cathodes, the largest of which can be up to 10 μm. Comprehensive theoretical calculation and experimental characterization show that sintering aids continuously migrate to the particle surface, suppress sublattice oxygen release and reduce the surface energy of the typically exposed facets, which promotes grain boundary migration and elevates calcination critical temperature. The dense SCNR cathodes, fabricated by packing of different-sized SCNR cathode particles, achieve a highest electrode press density of 3.9 g cm-3 and a highest volumetric energy density of 3000 Wh L-1. The pouch cell demonstrates a high energy density of 303 Wh kg-1, 730 Wh L-1 and 76% capacity retention after 1200 cycles. SCNR cathodes with an optimized particle size distribution can meet the requirements for both electric vehicles and portable devices. Furthermore, the principle for controlling the growth of SCNR particles can be widely applied when synthesizing other materials for Li-ion, Na-ion and K-ion batteries.

Hierarchical Nanotube-Constructed Porous TiO2-B Spheres for High Performance Lithium Ion Batteries.

Project description:Hierarchically structured porous TiO2-B spheres have been synthesized via a hydrothermal process using amorphous titania/oleylamine composites as a self-sacrificing template. The TiO2-B spheres are constructed by interconnected nanotubes and possess a high specific surface area of 295 m(2) g(-1). When evaluated as an anode material in lithium-half cells, the as-obtained TiO2-B material exhibits high and reversible lithium storage capacity of 270 mA h g(-1) at 1 C (340 mA g(-1)), excellent rate capability of 221 mA h g(-1) at 10 C, and long cycle life with over 70% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 10 C. The superior electrochemical performance of TiO2-B material strongly correlates to the synergetic superiorities with a combination of TiO2-B polymorph, hierarchically porous structure, interconnected nanotubes and spherical morphology. Post-mortem structural analyses reveal some discrete cubic LiTiO2 nanodots formed on the outer surfaces of TiO2-B nanotubes, which might account for the slight capacity loss upon prolonged electrochemical cycling.

Carbon wrapped hierarchical Li3V2(PO4)3 microspheres for high performance lithium ion batteries.

Project description:Nanomaterials are extensively studied in electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems because of their structural advantages. However, their volumetric energy density still needs improvement due to the high surface area, especially the carbon based nanocomposites. Constructing hierarchical micro-scaled materials from closely stacked subunits is proposed as an effective way to solve the problem. In this work, Li3V2(PO4)3@carbon hierarchical microspheres are prepared by a solvothermal reaction and subsequent annealing. Hierarchical Li3V2(PO4)3 structures with different subunits are obtained with the aid of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). Moreover, excessive PVP interconnect and form PVP-based hydrogels, which later convert into conductive carbon layer on the surface of Li3V2(PO4)3 microspheres during the annealing process. As a cathode material for lithium ion batteries, the 3D carbon wrapped Li3V2(PO4)3 hierarchical microspheres exhibit high rate capability and excellent cycling stability. The electrode has the capacity retention of 80% after 5000 cycles even at 50C.

Transparent lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Transparent devices have recently attracted substantial attention. Various applications have been demonstrated, including displays, touch screens, and solar cells; however, transparent batteries, a key component in fully integrated transparent devices, have not yet been reported. As battery electrode materials are not transparent and have to be thick enough to store energy, the traditional approach of using thin films for transparent devices is not suitable. Here we demonstrate a grid-structured electrode to solve this dilemma, which is fabricated by a microfluidics-assisted method. The feature dimension in the electrode is below the resolution limit of human eyes, and, thus, the electrode appears transparent. Moreover, by aligning multiple electrodes together, the amount of energy stored increases readily without sacrificing the transparency. This results in a battery with energy density of 10 Wh/L at a transparency of 60%. The device is also flexible, further broadening their potential applications. The transparent device configuration also allows in situ Raman study of fundamental electrochemical reactions in batteries.

Efficient Lithium Growth Control from Ordered Nitrogen-Chelated Lithium-Ion for High Performance Lithium Metal Batteries.

Project description:Lithium (Li) metal has attracted significant attention as next-generation anode material owing to its high theoretical specific capacity and low potential. For enabling the practical application of Li-metal as an anode according to energy demands, suppressing dendrite growth by controlling the Li-ion (Li+) is crucial. In this study, metal-organic frameworks comprising bipyridinic nitrogen linker (M-bpyN) are proposed as 3-dimensional (3D) Li guiding matrix. The proposed approach creates ordered electronegative functional sites that enable the preoccupied Li+ in the ordered bipyridine sites to produce isotropic Li growth. The Li guiding matrix containing 3D ordered bipyridinic N sites introduces preoccupied Li+ sites that attract the Li growth direction, thereby suppressing the dendrite growth during the electrodeposition of Li. After applying the M-bpyN layers, stable lifespan of up to 900 cycles in the Li|M-bpyN|Cu cell and over 1500 h of operation in the Li|M-bpyN|Li symmetric cell is achieved. Moreover, the Li|M-bpyN|LiFePO4 configuration shows a long cycle retention of 350 cycles at 0.5 C. These results indicate that an M-bpyN Li guiding matrix, which enables a uniform Li+ flux by 3D ordered Li+-chelating sites, serve as a suitable host for Li+ and enhance the performance of Li-metal electrodes.

Dual-doped hierarchical porous carbon derived from biomass for advanced supercapacitors and lithium ion batteries.

Project description:Nowadays, designing heteroatom-doped porous carbons from inexpensive biomass raw materials is a very attractive topic. Herein, we propose a simple approach to prepare heteroatom-doped porous carbons by using nettle leaves as the precursor and KOH as the activating agent. The nettle leaf derived porous carbons possess high specific surface area (up to 1951 m2 g-1), large total pore volume (up to 1.374 cm3 g-1), and high content of nitrogen and oxygen heteroatom doping (up to 17.85 at% combined). The obtained carbon as an electrode for symmetric supercapacitors with an ionic liquid electrolyte can offer a superior specific capacitance of 163 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 with a capacitance retention ratio as high as 67.5% at 100 A g-1, and a low capacitance loss of 8% after 10 000 cycles. Besides, the as-built supercapacitor demonstrates a high specific energy of 50 W h kg-1 at a specific power of 372 W kg-1, and maintains 21 W h kg-1 at the high power of 40 kW kg-1. Moreover, the resultant carbon as a Li-ion battery anode delivers a high reversible capacity of 1262 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and 730 mA h g-1 at 0.5 A g-1, and maintains a high capacity of 439 mA h g-1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g-1. These results demonstrate that the nettle leaf derived porous carbons offer great potential as electrodes for advanced supercapacitors and lithium ion batteries.

General and controllable synthesis strategy of metal oxide/TiO2 hierarchical heterostructures with improved lithium-ion battery performance.

Project description:We demonstrate a simple, efficient, yet versatile strategy for the synthesis of novel hierarchical heterostructures composed of TiO(2) nanofiber stem and various metal oxides (MOs) secondary nanostructures, including Co(3)O(4), Fe(2)O(3), Fe(3)O(4), and CuO, by advantageously combining the versatility of the electrospinning technique and hydrothermal growth method, for which the controllable formation process and possible formation mechanism are also investigated. Moreover, as a proof-of-concept demonstration of the functional properties of these hierarchical heterostructures, the Co(3)O(4)/TiO(2) hierarchical heterostructures are investigated as the lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) anode materials for the first time, which not only delivers a high reversible capacity of 632.5 mAh g(-1) and 95.3% capacity retention over 480 cycles, but also shows excellent rate capability with respect to the pristine TiO(2) nanofibers. The synergetic effect between Co(3)O(4) and TiO(2) as well as the unique feature of hierarchical heterostructures are probably responsible for the enhanced electrochemical performance.

Kirigami-based stretchable lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:We have produced stretchable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) using the concept of kirigami, i.e., a combination of folding and cutting. The designated kirigami patterns have been discovered and implemented to achieve great stretchability (over 150%) to LIBs that are produced by standardized battery manufacturing. It is shown that fracture due to cutting and folding is suppressed by plastic rolling, which provides kirigami LIBs excellent electrochemical and mechanical characteristics. The kirigami LIBs have demonstrated the capability to be integrated and power a smart watch, which may disruptively impact the field of wearable electronics by offering extra physical and functionality design spaces.
