Topological phase transition without gap closing.

ABSTRACT: Topological phase transition is accompanied with a change of topological numbers. According to the bulk-edge correspondence, the gap closing and the breakdown of the adiabaticity are necessary at the phase transition point to make the topological number ill-defined. However, the gap closing is not always needed. In this paper, we show that two topological distinct phases can be continuously connected without gap closing, provided the symmetry of the system changes during the process. Here we propose the generic principles how this is possible by demonstrating various examples such as 1D polyacetylene with the charge-density-wave order, 2D silicene with the antiferromagnetic order, 2D silicene or quantum well made of HgTe with superconducting proximity effects and 3D superconductor Cu doped Bi2Se3. It is argued that such an unusual phenomenon can occur when we detour around the gap closing point provided the connection of the topological numbers is lost along the detour path.

Emergence of topological semimetals in gap closing in semiconductors without inversion symmetry.

Project description:A band gap for electronic states in crystals governs various properties of solids, such as transport, optical, and magnetic properties. Its estimation and control have been an important issue in solid-state physics. The band gap can be controlled externally by various parameters, such as pressure, atomic compositions, and external field. Sometimes, the gap even collapses by tuning some parameter. In the field of topological insulators, this closing of the gap at a time-reversal invariant momentum indicates a band inversion, that is, it leads to a topological phase transition from a normal insulator to a topological insulator. We show, through an exhaustive study on possible space groups, that the gap closing in inversion-asymmetric crystals is universal, in the sense that the gap closing always leads either to a Weyl semimetal or to a nodal-line semimetal. We consider three-dimensional spinful systems with time-reversal symmetry. The space group of the system and the wave vector at the gap closing uniquely determine which possibility occurs and where the gap-closing points or lines lie in the wave vector space after the closing of the gap. In particular, we show that an insulator-to-insulator transition never happens, which is in sharp contrast to inversion-symmetric systems.

Photonic topological phase transition induced by material phase transition.

Project description:Photonic topological insulators (PTIs) have been proposed as an analogy to topological insulators in electronic systems. In particular, two-dimensional PTIs have gained attention for the integrated circuit applications. However, controlling the topological phase after fabrication is difficult because the photonic topology requires the built-in specific structures. This study experimentally demonstrates the band inversion in two-dimensional PTI induced by the phase transition of deliberately designed nanopatterns of a phase change material, Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST), which indicates the first observation of the photonic topological phase transition in two-dimensional PTI with changes in the Chern number. This approach allows us to directly alter the topological invariants, which is achieved by symmetry-breaking perturbation through GST nanopatterns with different symmetry from original PTI. The success of our scheme is attributed to the ultrafine lithographic alignment technologies of GST nanopatterns. These results demonstrate how to control photonic topological properties in a reconfigurable manner, providing insight into the possibilities for reconfigurable photonic processing circuits.

Terahertz Driven Reversible Topological Phase Transition of Monolayer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides.

Project description:This paper shows how terahertz light can drive ultrafast topological phase transitions in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). The phase transition is induced by the light interaction with both electron and phonon subsystems in the material. The mechanism of such a phase transition is formulated by thermodynamics theory: the Gibbs free energy landscape can be effectively modulated under light, and the relative stability between different (meta-)stable phases can be switched. This mechanism is applied to TMDs and reversible phase transitions between the topologically trivial 2H and nontrivial 1T' phases are predicted, providing appropriate light frequency, polarization, and intensity are applied. The large energy barrier on the martensitic transformation path can be significantly reduced, yielding a small energy barrier phase transition with fast kinetics. Compared with other phase transition schemes, light illumination has great advantages, such as its non-contact nature and easy tunability. The reversible topological phase transition can be applicable in high-resolution fast data storage and in-memory computing devices.

Phase-dependent Andreev molecules and superconducting gap closing in coherently-coupled Josephson junctions.

Project description:The Josephson junction (JJ) is an essential element of superconducting (SC) devices for both fundamental and applied physics. The short-range coherent coupling of two adjacent JJs forms Andreev molecule states (AMSs), which provide a new ingredient to engineer exotic SC phenomena such as topological SC states and Andreev qubits. Here we provide tunneling spectroscopy measurements on a device consisting of two electrically controllable planar JJs sharing a single SC electrode. We discover that Andreev spectra in the coupled JJ are highly modulated from those in the single JJs and possess phase-dependent AMS features reproduced in our numerical calculation. Notably, the SC gap closing due to the AMS formation is experimentally observed. Our results help in understanding SC transport derived from the AMS and promoting the use of AMS physics to engineer topological SC states and quantum information devices.

Topological quantum phase transition from mirror to time reversal symmetry protected topological insulator.

Project description:Topological insulators constitute a new phase of matter protected by symmetries. Time-reversal symmetry protects strong topological insulators of the Z2 class, which possess an odd number of metallic surface states with dispersion of a Dirac cone. Topological crystalline insulators are merely protected by individual crystal symmetries and exist for an even number of Dirac cones. Here, we demonstrate that Bi-doping of Pb1-x Sn x Se (111) epilayers induces a quantum phase transition from a topological crystalline insulator to a Z2 topological insulator. This occurs because Bi-doping lifts the fourfold valley degeneracy and induces a gap at [Formula: see text], while the three Dirac cones at the [Formula: see text] points of the surface Brillouin zone remain intact. We interpret this new phase transition as caused by a lattice distortion. Our findings extend the topological phase diagram enormously and make strong topological insulators switchable by distortions or electric fields.Transitions between topological phases of matter protected by different symmetries remain rare. Here, Mandal et al. report a quantum phase transition from a topological crystalline insulator to a Z2 topological insulator by doping Bi into Pb1-x Sn x Se (111) thin films.

Spin-controlled topological phase transition in non-Euclidean space.

Project description:Modulation of topological phase transition has been pursued by researchers in both condensed matter and optics research fields, and has been realized in Euclidean systems, such as topological photonic crystals, topological metamaterials, and coupled resonator arrays. However, the spin-controlled topological phase transition in non-Euclidean space has not yet been explored. Here, we propose a non-Euclidean configuration based on Möbius rings, and we demonstrate the spin-controlled transition between the topological edge state and the bulk state. The Möbius ring, which is designed to have an 8π period, has a square cross section at the twist beginning and the length/width evolves adiabatically along the loop, accompanied by conversion from transverse electric to transverse magnetic modes resulting from the spin-locked effect. The 8π period Möbius rings are used to construct Su-Schrieffer-Heeger configuration, and the configuration can support the topological edge states excited by circularly polarized light, and meanwhile a transition from the topological edge state to the bulk state can be realized by controlling circular polarization. In addition, the spin-controlled topological phase transition in non-Euclidean space is feasible for both Hermitian and non-Hermitian cases in 2D systems. This work provides a new degree of polarization to control topological photonic states based on the spin of Möbius rings and opens a way to tune the topological phase in non-Euclidean space.

Pressure-induced topological phase transition in noncentrosymmetric elemental tellurium.

Project description:Recent progress in understanding the electronic band topology and emergent topological properties encourage us to reconsider the band structure of well-known materials including elemental substances. Controlling such a band topology by external field is of particular interest from both fundamental and technological viewpoints. Here we report possible signatures of the pressure-induced topological phase transition from a semiconductor to a Weyl semimetal in elemental tellurium probed by transport measurements. Pressure variation of the periods of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, as well as oscillation phases, shows an anomaly around the pressure theoretically predicted for topological phase transition. This behavior is consistent with the pressure-induced band deformation and resultant band-crossing effect. Moreover, effective cyclotron mass is reduced toward the critical pressure, potentially reflecting the emergence of massless linear dispersion. The present result paves the way for studying the electronic band topology in well-known compounds and topological phase transition by the external field.

Topological triple phase transition in non-Hermitian Floquet quasicrystals.

Project description:Phase transitions connect different states of matter and are often concomitant with the spontaneous breaking of symmetries. An important category of phase transitions is mobility transitions, among which is the well known Anderson localization1, where increasing the randomness induces a metal-insulator transition. The introduction of topology in condensed-matter physics2-4 lead to the discovery of topological phase transitions and materials as topological insulators5. Phase transitions in the symmetry of non-Hermitian systems describe the transition to on-average conserved energy6 and new topological phases7-9. Bulk conductivity, topology and non-Hermitian symmetry breaking seemingly emerge from different physics and, thus, may appear as separable phenomena. However, in non-Hermitian quasicrystals, such transitions can be mutually interlinked by forming a triple phase transition10. Here we report the experimental observation of a triple phase transition, where changing a single parameter simultaneously gives rise to a localization (metal-insulator), a topological and parity-time symmetry-breaking (energy) phase transition. The physics is manifested in a temporally driven (Floquet) dissipative quasicrystal. We implement our ideas via photonic quantum walks in coupled optical fibre loops11. Our study highlights the intertwinement of topology, symmetry breaking and mobility phase transitions in non-Hermitian quasicrystalline synthetic matter. Our results may be applied in phase-change devices, in which the bulk and edge transport and the energy or particle exchange with the environment can be predicted and controlled.

Unconventional transformation of spin Dirac phase across a topological quantum phase transition.

Project description:The topology of a topological material can be encoded in its surface states. These surface states can only be removed by a bulk topological quantum phase transition into a trivial phase. Here we use photoemission spectroscopy to image the formation of protected surface states in a topological insulator as we chemically tune the system through a topological transition. Surprisingly, we discover an exotic spin-momentum locked, gapped surface state in the trivial phase that shares many important properties with the actual topological surface state in anticipation of the change of topology. Using a spin-resolved measurement, we show that apart from a surface bandgap these states develop spin textures similar to the topological surface states well before the transition. Our results offer a general paradigm for understanding how surface states in topological phases arise from a quantum phase transition and are suggestive for the future realization of Weyl arcs, condensed matter supersymmetry and other fascinating phenomena in the vicinity of a quantum criticality.

Closing Human Reference Genome Gaps: Identifying and Characterizing Gap-Closing Sequences.

Project description:Despite continuous updates of the human reference genome, there are still hundreds of unresolved gaps which account for about 5% of the total sequence length. Given the availability of whole genome de novo assemblies, especially those derived from long-read sequencing data, gap-closing sequences can be determined. By comparing 17 de novo long-read sequencing assemblies with the human reference genome, we identified a total of 1,125 gap-closing sequences for 132 (16.9% of 783) gaps and added up to 2.2 Mb novel sequences to the human reference genome. More than 90% of the non-redundant sequences could be verified by unmapped reads from the Simons Genome Diversity Project dataset. In addition, 15.6% of the non-reference sequences were found in at least one of four non-human primate genomes. We further demonstrated that the non-redundant sequences had high content of simple repeats and satellite sequences. Moreover, 43 (32.6%) of the 132 closed gaps were shown to be polymorphic; such sequences may play an important biological role and can be useful in the investigation of human genetic diversity.
