Emergence of nanoscale inhomogeneity in the superconducting state of a homogeneously disordered conventional superconductor.

ABSTRACT: The notion of spontaneous formation of an inhomogeneous superconducting state is at the heart of most theories attempting to understand the superconducting state in the presence of strong disorder. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy and high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, we experimentally demonstrate that under the competing effects of strong homogeneous disorder and superconducting correlations, the superconducting state of a conventional superconductor, NbN, spontaneously segregates into domains. Tracking these domains as a function of temperature we observe that the superconducting domains persist across the bulk superconducting transition, Tc, and disappear close to the pseudogap temperature, T*, where signatures of superconducting correlations disappear from the tunneling spectrum and the superfluid response of the system.

Broadened quantum critical ground state in a disordered superconducting thin film.

Project description:A superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) in two dimensions is a prototypical quantum phase transition (QPT) with a clear quantum critical point (QCP) at zero temperature (T = 0). The SIT is induced by a field B and observed in disordered thin films. In some of weakly disordered or crystalline thin films, however, an anomalous metallic (AM) ground state emerges over a wide B range between the superconducting and insulating phases. It remains a fundamental open question how the QPT picture of the SIT is modified when the AM state appears. Here we present measurements of the Nernst effect N, which has great sensitivity to the fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter. From a thorough contour map of N in the B-T plane, we found a thermal-to-quantum crossover line of the superconducting fluctuations, a so-called ghost-temperature line associated with the QPT, as well as a ghost-field line associated with a thermal transition. The QCP is identified as a T = 0 intercept of the ghost-temperature line inside the AM state, which verifies that the AM state is a broadened critical state of the SIT.

Superconducting magnetoresistance in ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet trilayers.

Project description:Magnetoresistance is a multifaceted effect reflecting the diverse transport mechanisms exhibited by different kinds of plain materials and hybrid nanostructures; among other, giant, colossal, and extraordinary magnetoresistance versions exist, with the notation indicative of the intensity. Here we report on the superconducting magnetoresistance observed in ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet trilayers, namely Co/Nb/Co trilayers, subjected to a parallel external magnetic field equal to the coercive field. By manipulating the transverse stray dipolar fields that originate from the out-of-plane magnetic domains of the outer layers that develop at coercivity, we can suppress the supercurrent of the interlayer. We experimentally demonstrate a scaling of the magnetoresistance magnitude that we reproduce with a closed-form phenomenological formula that incorporates relevant macroscopic parameters and microscopic length scales of the superconducting and ferromagnetic structural units. The generic approach introduced here can be used to design novel cryogenic devices that completely switch the supercurrent 'on' and 'off', thus exhibiting the ultimate magnetoresistance magnitude 100% on a regular basis.

Nanoscale magnetization inhomogeneity within single phase nanopillars.

Project description:We report observation of a radial dependence in the magnetic anisotropy of epitaxially strained CoFe2O4 nanopillars in a BaTiO3 matrix. This archetypal example of a multiferroic heterostructure with a self-assembling three-dimensional architecture possesses significant out-of-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. The anisotropy originates from the large magnetostriction of CoFe2O4 and the state of stress within the nanocomposite. Magnetometry suggests the existence of two magnetic phases with different anisotropies. Micromagnetic simulations of a core-shell magnetic anisotropy qualitatively reproduce features of the magnetic hysteresis and elucidate the magnetization reversal mechanism: The magnetization initially reorients within the pillar core, followed by that of the shell. This is consistent with polarized small-angle neutron scattering which can be described by a CoFe2O4 magnetization that is nonuniform on nanometer length scales. As the length scale of inhomogeneity of the magnetic anisotropy is similar to estimates of the relaxation of the displacement field from the CoFe2O4-BaTiO3 interface, stress and its influence on structure provide an important route to new functionality of vertically aligned nanopillars for applications in low-power memory, computing, and sensing.

DNA-assembled superconducting 3D nanoscale architectures.

Project description:Studies of nanoscale superconducting structures have revealed various physical phenomena and led to the development of a wide range of applications. Most of these studies concentrated on one- and two-dimensional structures due to the lack of approaches for creation of fully engineered three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures. Here, we present a 'bottom-up' method to create 3D superconducting nanostructures with prescribed multiscale organization using DNA-based self-assembly methods. We assemble 3D DNA superlattices from octahedral DNA frames with incorporated nanoparticles, through connecting frames at their vertices, which result in cubic superlattices with a 48 nm unit cell. The superconductive superlattice is formed by converting a DNA superlattice first into highly-structured 3D silica scaffold, to turn it from a soft and liquid-environment dependent macromolecular construction into a solid structure, following by its coating with superconducting niobium (Nb). Through low-temperature electrical characterization we demonstrate that this process creates 3D arrays of Josephson junctions. This approach may be utilized in development of a variety of applications such as 3D Superconducting Quantum interference Devices (SQUIDs) for measurement of the magnetic field vector, highly sensitive Superconducting Quantum Interference Filters (SQIFs), and parametric amplifiers for quantum information systems.

Conversion of a conventional superconductor into a topological superconductor by topological proximity effect.

Project description:Realization of topological superconductors (TSCs) hosting Majorana fermions is a central challenge in condensed-matter physics. One approach is to use the superconducting proximity effect (SPE) in heterostructures, where a topological insulator contacted with a superconductor hosts an effective p-wave pairing by the penetration of Cooper pairs across the interface. However, this approach suffers a difficulty in accessing the topological interface buried deep beneath the surface. Here, we propose an alternative approach to realize topological superconductivity without SPE. In a Pb(111) thin film grown on TlBiSe2, we discover that the Dirac-cone state of substrate TlBiSe2 migrates to the top surface of Pb film and obtains an energy gap below the superconducting transition temperature of Pb. This suggests that a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductor is converted into a TSC by the topological proximity effect. Our discovery opens a route to manipulate topological superconducting properties of materials.

Superconducting phase transitions in disordered NbTiN films.

Project description:Suppression of superconductivity in disordered systems is a fundamental problem of condensed matter physics. Here we investigate superconducting niobium-titanium-nitride (Nb1-xTixN) thin films grown by the atomic layer deposition (ALD) with slightly different growth process parameters. We observe a smooth crossover from the disorder-driven superconductor-normal metal transition (SMT) to the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) via the intermediate Bose metal state detected by the low-temperature saturation of the temperature dependence of the sheet resistance. We demonstrate that the SIT via the intervening Bose metal state occurs if the sheet resistance of the film in the maximum, Rmax prior to the superconducting drop of R(T), exceeds Rq = h/4e2.

Bacteriophytochrome Photoisomerization Proceeds Homogeneously Despite Heterogeneity in Ground State.

Project description:Phytochromes are red/far-red photoreceptors that are widely distributed in plants and prokaryotes. Ultrafast photoisomerization of a double bond in a biliverdin cofactor or other linear tetrapyrrole drives their photoactivity, but their photodynamics are only partially understood. Multiexponential dynamics were observed in previous ultrafast spectroscopic studies and were attributed to heterogeneous populations of the pigment-protein complex. In this work, two-dimensional photon echo spectroscopy was applied to study dynamics of the bacteriophytochromes RpBphP2 and PaBphP. Two-dimensional photon echo spectroscopy can simultaneously resolve inhomogeneity in ensembles and fast dynamics by correlating pump wavelength with the emitted signal wavelength. The distribution of absorption and emission energies within the same state indicates an ensemble of heterogeneous protein environments that are spectroscopically distinct. However, the lifetimes of the dynamics are uniform across the ensemble, suggesting a homogeneous model involving sequential intermediates for the initial photodynamics of isomerization.

Direct evidence for a pressure-induced nodal superconducting gap in the Ba0.65Rb0.35Fe2As2 superconductor.

Project description:The superconducting gap structure in iron-based high-temperature superconductors (Fe-HTSs) is non-universal. In contrast to other unconventional superconductors, in the Fe-HTSs both d-wave and extended s-wave pairing symmetries are close in energy. Probing the proximity between these very different superconducting states and identifying experimental parameters that can tune them is of central interest. Here we report high-pressure muon spin rotation experiments on the temperature-dependent magnetic penetration depth in the optimally doped nodeless s-wave Fe-HTS Ba0.65Rb0.35Fe2As2. Upon pressure, a strong decrease of the penetration depth in the zero-temperature limit is observed, while the superconducting transition temperature remains nearly constant. More importantly, the low-temperature behaviour of the inverse-squared magnetic penetration depth, which is a direct measure of the superfluid density, changes qualitatively from an exponential saturation at zero pressure to a linear-in-temperature behaviour at higher pressures, indicating that hydrostatic pressure promotes the appearance of nodes in the superconducting gap.

Superconducting topological surface states in the noncentrosymmetric bulk superconductor PbTaSe<sub>2</sub>.

Project description:The search for topological superconductors (TSCs) is one of the most urgent contemporary problems in condensed matter systems. TSCs are characterized by a full superconducting gap in the bulk and topologically protected gapless surface (or edge) states. Within each vortex core of TSCs, there exists the zero-energy Majorana bound states, which are predicted to exhibit non-Abelian statistics and to form the basis of the fault-tolerant quantum computation. To date, no stoichiometric bulk material exhibits the required topological surface states (TSSs) at the Fermi level (EF) combined with fully gapped bulk superconductivity. We report atomic-scale visualization of the TSSs of the noncentrosymmetric fully gapped superconductor PbTaSe2. Using quasi-particle scattering interference imaging, we find two TSSs with a Dirac point at E ≅ 1.0 eV, of which the inner TSS and the partial outer TSS cross EF, on the Pb-terminated surface of this fully gapped superconductor. This discovery reveals PbTaSe2 as a promising candidate for TSC.

Superconducting disordered neural networks for neuromorphic processing with fluxons.

Project description:In superconductors, magnetic fields are quantized into discrete fluxons (flux quanta Φ0), made of microscopic circulating supercurrents. We introduce a multiterminal synapse network comprising a disordered array of superconducting loops with Josephson junctions. The loops can trap fluxons defining memory, while the junctions allow their movement between loops. Dynamics of fluxons through such a disordered system through a complex reconfigurable energy landscape represents brain-like spiking information flow. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a three-loop network using YBa2Cu3O7 - δ-based superconducting loops and Josephson junctions, which exhibit stable memory configurations of trapped flux in loops that determine the rate of flow of fluxons through synaptic connections. The memory states are, in turn, affected by the applied input signals but can also be externally configured electrically through control current/feedback terminals. These results establish a previously unexplored, biologically similar architectural approach to neuromorphic computing that is scalable while dissipating energy of atto Joules/spike.
