Composite media mixing Bragg and local resonances for highly attenuating and broad bandgaps.

ABSTRACT: In this article, we investigate composite media which present both a local resonance and a periodic structure. We numerically and experimentally consider the case of a very academic and simplified system that is a quasi-one dimensional split ring resonator medium. We modify its periodicity to shift the position of the Bragg bandgap relative to the local resonance one. We observe that for a well-chosen lattice constant, the local resonance frequency matches the Bragg frequency thus opening a single bandgap which is at the same time very wide and strongly attenuating. We explain this interesting phenomenon by the dispersive nature of the unit cell of the medium, using an analogy with the concept of white light cavities. Our results provide new ways to design wide and efficient bandgap materials.

Forests as a natural seismic metamaterial: Rayleigh wave bandgaps induced by local resonances.

Project description:We explore the thesis that resonances in trees result in forests acting as locally resonant metamaterials for Rayleigh surface waves in the geophysics context. A geophysical experiment demonstrates that a Rayleigh wave, propagating in soft sedimentary soil at frequencies lower than 150 Hz, experiences strong attenuation, when interacting with a forest, over two separate large frequency bands. This experiment is interpreted using finite element simulations that demonstrate the observed attenuation is due to bandgaps when the trees are arranged at the sub-wavelength scale with respect to the incident Rayleigh wave. The repetitive bandgaps are generated by the coupling of the successive longitudinal resonances of trees with the vertical component of the Rayleigh wave. For wavelengths down to 5 meters, the resulting bandgaps are remarkably large and strongly attenuating when the acoustic impedance of the trees matches the impedance of the soil. Since longitudinal resonances of a vertical resonator are inversely proportional to its length, a man-made engineered array of resonators that attenuates Rayleigh waves at frequency ≤10 Hz could be designed starting from vertical pillars coupled to the ground with longitudinal resonance ≤10 Hz.

A generalized fractional-order elastodynamic theory for non-local attenuating media.

Project description:This study presents a generalized elastodynamic theory, based on fractional-order operators, capable of modelling the propagation of elastic waves in non-local attenuating solids and across complex non-local interfaces. Classical elastodynamics cannot capture hybrid field transport processes that are characterized by simultaneous propagation and diffusion. The proposed continuum mechanics formulation, which combines fractional operators in both time and space, offers unparalleled capabilities to predict the most diverse combinations of multiscale, non-local, dissipative and attenuating elastic energy transport mechanisms. Despite the many features of this theory and the broad range of applications, this work focuses on the behaviour and modelling capabilities of the space-fractional term and on its effect on the elastodynamics of solids. We also derive a generalized fractional-order version of Snell's Law of refraction and of the corresponding Fresnel's coefficients. This formulation allows predicting the behaviour of fully coupled elastic waves interacting with non-local interfaces. The theoretical results are validated via direct numerical simulations.

Non-dispersive Fano resonances in hybrid plasmonic-distributed Bragg reflector structures.

Project description:Fano resonance due to coupling of plasmon mode and Bragg modes is revealed without strong angular dependence based on Au nanoparticle on distributed Bragg reflectors (Au NPoDBRs). This Fano interference involves three-modes-coupling: the nanoparticle's plasmon resonance, dispersive Bragg modes, and non-dispersive Bragg modes. It can be interpreted as a consequence of two processes: plasmonic coupling between dispersive Bragg modes and broad plasmon mode, and the strong coupling between narrowed plasmonic mode and non-dispersive Bragg mode. This Fano interference shows little dependence on the incidence angle but high tunability with the top-layer thickness, which is exploitable for novel nanophotonic devices with dispersion engineering.

Linewidth narrowing of aluminum breathing plasmon resonances in Bragg grating decorated nanodisks.

Project description:Plasmon resonances with high-quality are of great importance in light emission control and light-matter interactions. Nevertheless, inherent ohmic and radiative losses usually hinder the plasmon performance of metallic nanostructures, especially for aluminum (Al). Here we demonstrate a Bragg grating decorated nanodisk to narrow the linewidth of breathing plasmon resonances compared with a commensurate nanodisk. Two kinds of plasmon resonant modes and the corresponding mode patterns are investigated in cathodoluminescence (CL) depending on the different electron bombardment positions, and the experimental results agree well with full wave electromagnetic simulations. Linewidth narrowing can be clearly understood using an approximated magnetic dipole model. Our results suggest a feasible mechanism for linewidth narrowing of plasmon resonances as well as pave the way for in-depth analysis and potential applications of Al plasmon systems.

High-performance ceramic/epoxy composite adhesives enabled by rational ceramic bandgaps.

Project description:High over-all properties, including low dielectric loss, high breakdown strength, high mechanical shock strength, high thermal conductivity and high weight stability, are very difficult to simultaneously achieve in electrical-insulation applicable cured potting-adhesive materials. To deal with this challenge, in this work, we have designed and fabricated a series of epoxy based composite potting-adhesives filled with low-cost and high-performance inorganic micro-particles including alpha-silica, alpha-alumina and alpha-SiC. Combination employment of high-molecular-weight and low-molecular-weight epoxy resins as matrices has been made. Heat-induced curing or crosslink of resin matrices has been carried out. Large band gap of silica filler has endowed the cured composite with high breakdown strength and ageing breakdown strength, and meanwhile relatively high deformation trait of silica has led to high shock strength of cured composite. Silica filler has been found to be superior to other two fillers, namely, optimal over-all properties such as dielectric, breakdown, mechanical and thermal features have been obtained in silica filled cured composite. High breakdown strength of ~48 MV m-1 and shock strength of ~9950 J m-2 have been achieved in silica loaded composite. This work might open up the way for large-scale fabrication of promising epoxy-based hybrid potting-adhesives.

Magnetoinductive waves in attenuating media.

Project description:The capability of magnetic induction to transmit signals in attenuating environments has recently gained significant research interest. The wave aspect-magnetoinductive (MI) waves-has been proposed for numerous applications in RF-challenging environments, such as underground/underwater wireless networks, body area networks, and in-vivo medical diagnosis and treatment applications, to name but a few, where conventional electromagnetic waves have a number of limitations, most notably losses. To date, the effects of eddy currents inside the dissipative medium have not been characterised analytically. Here we propose a comprehensive circuit model of coupled resonators in a homogeneous dissipative medium, that takes into account all the electromagnetic effects of eddy currents, and, thereby, derive a general dispersion equation for the MI waves. We also report laboratory experiments to confirm our findings. Our work will serve as a fundamental model for design and analysis of every system employing MI waves or more generally, magnetically-coupled circuits in attenuating media.

Radiation damping strongly perturbs remote resonances in the presence of homonuclear mixing.

Project description:In this work, it is experimentally shown that the weak oscillating magnetic field (known as the "radiation damping" field) caused by the inductive coupling between the transverse magnetization of nuclei and the radio frequency circuit perturbs remote resonances when homonuclear total correlation mixing is applied. Coherent Fano resonances in a plasmonic nanocluster enhance optical four-wave mixing.

Project description:Plasmonic nanoclusters, an ordered assembly of coupled metallic nanoparticles, support unique spectral features known as Fano resonances due to the coupling between their subradiant and superradiant plasmon modes. Within the Fano resonance, absorption is significantly enhanced, giving rise to highly localized, intense near fields with the potential to enhance nonlinear optical processes. Here, we report a structure supporting the coherent oscillation of two distinct Fano resonances within an individual plasmonic nanocluster. We show how this coherence enhances the optical four-wave mixing process in comparison with other double-resonant plasmonic clusters that lack this property. A model that explains the observed four-wave mixing features is proposed, which is generally applicable to any third-order process in plasmonic nanostructures. With a larger effective susceptibility ?(3) relative to existing nonlinear optical materials, this coherent double-resonant nanocluster offers a strategy for designing high-performance third-order nonlinear optical media.

A composite patch loaded with 2-Deoxy Glucose facilitates cardiac recovery after myocardial infarction via attenuating local inflammatory response.

Project description:Local inflammatory microenvironment in the early stage of myocardial infarction (MI) severely impaired cardiac recovery post-MI. Macrophages play a pivotal role in this process. A classical glycolytic inhibitor, 2-Deoxy-Glucose (2-DG), has been found to regulate the excessive pro-inflammatory macrophage polarization in the infarcted myocardium. This study investigated the effect of 2-DG-loaded chitosan/gelatin composite patch on the infarct microenvironment post-MI and its impact on cardiac repair. The results showed that the 2-DG patch significantly inhibited the expression of inflammatory cytokines, alleviated reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, repressed the proinflammatory polarization of macrophages, attenuated local inflammatory microenvironment in the ischemic hearts, as well as improved cardiac function, reduced scar size, and promoted angiogenesis post-MI. In terms of mechanism, 2-DG exerts anti-inflammatory effects through inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway and reducing the assembly and activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. These findings suggest that 2-DG composite patch may represent a promising therapeutic strategy for cardiac repair after MI.

Tunable light filtering by a Bragg mirror/heavily doped semiconducting nanocrystal composite.

Project description:Tunable light filters are critical components for many optical applications in which light in-coupling, out-coupling or rejection is crucial, such as lasing, sensing, photovoltaics and information and communication technology. For this purpose, Bragg mirrors (band-pass filters with high reflectivity) represent good candidates. However, their optical characteristics are determined during the fabrication stage. Heavily doped semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs), on the other hand, deliver a high degree of optical tunability through the active modulation of their carrier density, ultimately influencing their plasmonic absorption properties. Here, we propose the design of an actively tunable light filter composed of a Bragg mirror and a layer of plasmonic semiconductor NCs. We demonstrate that the filtering properties of the coupled device can be tuned to cover a wide range of frequencies from the visible to the near infrared (vis-NIR) spectral region when employing varying carrier densities. As the tunable component, we implemented a dispersion of copper selenide (Cu2-xSe) NCs and a film of indium tin oxide (ITO) NCs, which are known to show optical tunablility with chemical or electrochemical treatments. We utilized the Mie theory to describe the carrier-dependent plasmonic properties of the Cu2-x Se NC dispersion and the effective medium theory to describe the optical characteristics of the ITO film. The transmission properties of the Bragg mirror have been modelled with the transfer matrix method. We foresee ease of experimental realization of the coupled device, where filtering modulation is achieved upon chemical and electrochemical post-fabrication treatment of the heavily doped semiconductor NC component, eventually resulting in tunable transmission properties of the coupled device.
