A selective blocking method to control the overgrowth of Pt on Au nanorods.

ABSTRACT: A method for the preparation of smooth deposits of Pt on Au nanorods is described, involving sequential deposition steps with selective blocking of surface sites that reduces Pt-on-Pt deposition. The Au-Pt nanorods prepared by this method have higher long-term stability than those prepared by standard Pt deposition. Electrochemical data show that the resulting structure has more extended regions of Pt surface and enhanced activity toward the carbon monoxide oxidation and oxygen reduction reactions.

Project description:BackgroundAs nanotechnology advances rapidly, the nanozymes which could replace protein enzymes in bioanalytical assays bring a new opportunity to the development of simple and sensitive diagnostic tools.PurposeAntibody-conjugated Au-Pt core/shell nanorods (Au@Pt NRs) have been used for nanozyme probes for diagnosis of rubella virus. Au@Pt NRs, prepared by Au nanorod-mediated growth, exhibit peroxidase-like activities and could serve as an inexpensive replacement for horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in conjugation of antigen.MethodUsing a capture enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay for the determination of rubella virus.ResultsCompared with antibody-conjugated HRP, the antigen-conjugated Au@Pt NRs are more stable and more robust, but less expensive. Based on the enhanced catalytic properties of this nanozyme probe, it was found that the antigen-conjugated Au@Pt NRs-based enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay exhibited good sensitivity.ConclusionOur results indicate that these antigen-conjugated Au@Pt NRs represent a suitable nanozyme probe for future clinical applications under various conditions.

Symmetric and asymmetric overgrowth of a Ag shell onto gold nanorods assisted by Pt pre-deposition.

Project description:The plasmonic properties of noble metallic nanoparticles could be tuned by morphology and composition, enabling opportunities for applications in sensors, photocatalysis, biomedicine, and energy conversion. Here, we report a method of the symmetric and asymmetric overgrowth of a Ag shell onto gold nanorods assisted by Pt pre-deposition via a 2-step approach. Firstly, gold nanorods (AuNRs), synthesized via a seed-mediated method, were used as seeds to form a AuNR-Pt structure, by using K2PtCl4 as the precursor. In this step, most of the Pt material was selectively deposited on the tips of the AuNR. Secondly, by using AgNO3 as the precursor, a Ag shell was overgrown on the surface of the AuNRs-Pt nanoparticles, resulting in a (AuNR-Pt)-Ag core-shell tri-metallic nanostructure. Due to the surface energy and lattice matching between Au and Ag, the Ag shell preferred to be epitaxially overgrown on the side of AuNR. The Ag shell thickness and symmetry of the (AuNR-Pt)-Ag could be tuned by changing the amounts of AgNO3 precursor. With the increase of the Ag shell thickness, the (AuNR-Pt)-Ag nanostructures changed from symmetric to asymmetric. The obtained (AuNR-Pt)-Ag nanostructures were studied using UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, EDS mapping, DLS, and ICP-MS. The growth mechanism was discussed.

Overgrowth of Rhodium on Gold Nanorods.

Project description:This study focuses on the deposition and growth mode of rhodium (Rh) on gold (Au) seed nanorods (NRs). Using a combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, we show that Rh deposition results in an uneven overlayer morphology on the Au NR seeds, with a tendency for Rh deposition to occur preferentially on the Au NR ends. The results suggest that complex and kinetically driven metal-metal interactions take place in this system.

Au-Nanorods Supporting Pd and Pt Nanocatalysts for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction: Pd Is Revealed to Be a Better Catalyst than Pt.

Project description:Ordered thin films of Au nanorods (NRs) on Ti/Au/Si heterostructure substrates are electrodeposited in thin film aluminum oxide templates and, after template removal, serve as supports for Pd and Pt nanocatalysts. Based on previous work which showed a better electrocatalytic performance for layered Au/Pd nanostructures than monolithic Pd, electrodeposited 20 nm Pd discs on Au-NRs are first investigated in terms of their catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and compared to monolithic 20 nm Pd and Pt discs. To further boost performance, the interfacial interaction area between the Au-NRs supports and the active metals (Pt and Pd) was increased via magnetron sputtering an extremely thin layer of Pt and Pd (20 nm overall sputtered thickness) on the Au-NRs after template removal. In this way, the whole NR surface (top and lateral) was covered with Pt and Pd nanoparticles, ensuring a maximum interfacial contact between the support and the active metal. The HER performance obtained was substantially higher than that of the other nanostructures. A Salient result of the present work, however, is the superior activity obtained for sputtered Pd on Au in comparison to that of sputtered Pt on Au. The results also show that increasing the Au-NR length translates in a strong increase in performance. Density functional theory calculations show that the interfacial electronic interactions between Au and Pd lead to suitable values of hydrogen adsorption energy on all possible sites, thus promoting faster (barrier-free diffusion) hydrogen adsorption and its recombination to H2. A Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism for HER is proposed, and a volcano plot is suggested based on the results of the Tafel plots and the calculated hydrogen adsorption energies.

Selective Formation of Porous Pt Nanorods for Highly Electrochemically Efficient Neural Electrode Interfaces.

Project description:The enhanced electrochemical activity of nanostructured materials is readily exploited in energy devices, but their utility in scalable and human-compatible implantable neural interfaces can significantly advance the performance of clinical and research electrodes. We utilize low-temperature selective dealloying to develop scalable and biocompatible one-dimensional platinum nanorod (PtNR) arrays that exhibit superb electrochemical properties at various length scales, stability, and biocompatibility for high performance neurotechnologies. PtNR arrays record brain activity with cellular resolution from the cortical surfaces in birds and nonhuman primates. Significantly, strong modulation of surface recorded single unit activity by auditory stimuli is demonstrated in European Starling birds as well as the modulation of local field potentials in the visual cortex by light stimuli in a nonhuman primate and responses to electrical stimulation in mice. PtNRs record behaviorally and physiologically relevant neuronal dynamics from the surface of the brain with high spatiotemporal resolution, which paves the way for less invasive brain-machine interfaces.

Plasmonic enhancements of photocatalytic activity of Pt/n-Si/Ag photodiodes using Au/Ag core/shell nanorods.

Project description:We report the plasmonic enhancement of the photocatalytic properties of Pt/n-Si/Ag photodiode photocatalysts using Au/Ag core/shell nanorods. We show that Au/Ag core/shell nanorods can be synthesized with tunable plasmon resonance frequencies and then conjugated onto Pt/n-Si/Ag photodiodes using well-defined chemistry. Photocatalytic studies showed that the conjugation with Au/Ag core/shell nanorods can significantly enhance the photocatalytic activity by more than a factor of 3. Spectral dependence studies further revealed that the photocatalytic enhancement is strongly correlated with the plasmonic absorption spectra of the Au/Ag core/shell nanorods, unambiguously demonstrating the plasmonic enhancement effect.

Enhanced catalytic activity of Au core Pd shell Pt cluster trimetallic nanorods for CO<sub>2</sub> reduction.

Project description:Herein, Au core Pd shell Pt cluster nanorods (Au@Pd@Pt NRs) with enhanced catalytic activity were rationally designed for carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction. The surface composition and Pd-Pt ratios significantly influenced the catalytic activity, and the optimized structure had only a half-monolayer equivalent of Pt (θ Pt = 0.5) with 2 monolayers of Pd, which could enhance the catalytic activity for CO2 reduction by 6 fold as compared to the Pt surface at -1.5 V vs. SCE. A further increase in the loading of Pt actually reduced the catalytic activity; this inferred that a synergistic effect existed among the three different nanostructure components. Furthermore, these Au NRs could be employed to improve the photoelectrocatalytic activity by 30% at -1.5 V due to the surface plasmon resonance. An in situ SERS investigation inferred that the Au@Pd@Pt NRs (θ Pt = 0.5) were less likely to be poisoned by CO because of the Pd-Pt bimetal edge sites; due to this reason, the proposed structure exhibited highest catalytic activity. These results play an important role in the mechanistic studies of CO2 reduction and offer a new way to design new materials for the conversion of CO2 to liquid fuels.

The Effect of Annealing Treatment and Atom Layer Deposition to Au/Pt Nanoparticles-Decorated TiO₂ Nanorods as Photocatalysts.

Project description:The wide band gap of TiO₂ hinders the utilization of visible light in high-performance photocatalysis. Herein, vertically aligned Ti nanopillar arrays (NPAs) were grown by the glancing angle deposition method (GLAD) and then thermally oxidized into TiO₂ NPAs. The metallic nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated by successive ion layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. And we covered ultrathin TiO₂ layer on Au/Pt NPs decorated NPA using atomic layer deposition (ALD) method and did annealing process in the end. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance and dye degradation have been studied. We find the dye degradation efficiency of best combination reaches up to 1.5 times higher than that of original Au/Pt-TiO₂ sample under visible light irradiation. The TiO₂ ALD layer effectively protects the nanostructure from corrosion and helps the transmission of electrons to the electrolyte. By controlling the annealing temperature we could achieve a matched band gap due to change in noble metal particle size. Our work demonstrates that rational design of composite nanostructures enhances the usage of broader wavelength range light and optimizes photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in practical applications.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of single Au nanorods.

Project description:We propose monochromatic dark-field imaging microscopy (DFM) to measure the non-faradaic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of single Au nanorods (AuNRs). DFM was utilized to monitor the plasmonic scattering of monochromatic incident light by surface-immobilized individual AuNRs. When modulating the surface potential at a certain frequency, non-faradaic charging and discharging of AuNRs altered their electron density, leading to periodical fluctuations in the scattering intensity. Analysis of the amplitude and phase of the optical intensity fluctuation as a function of modulation frequency resulted in the EIS of single AuNRs. High-frequency (>100 Hz) modulation allowed us to differentiate the intrinsic charging effect from other contributions such as the periodic migration and accumulation of counterions in the surrounding medium, because the latter occurred at a longer timescale. As a result, single nanoparticle EIS led to the surface capacitance of single AuNRs being closer to the theoretical value. Since interfacial capacitance has been proven sensitive to molecular interactions, the present work also offers a new platform for single nanoparticle sensing by measuring the single nanoparticle capacitance.

Oxidation of Dichloromethane over Au, Pt, and Pt-Au Containing Catalysts Supported on γ-Al2O3 and CeO2-Al2O3.

Project description:Au, Pt, and Pt-Au catalysts supported on Al2O3 and CeO2-Al2O3 were studied in the oxidation of dichloromethane (DCM, CH2Cl2). High DCM oxidation activities and HCl selectivities were seen with all the catalysts. With the addition of Au, remarkably lower light-off temperatures were observed as they were reduced by 70 and 85 degrees with the Al2O3-supported and by 35 and 40 degrees with the CeO2-Al2O3-supported catalysts. Excellent HCl selectivities close to 100% were achieved with the Au/Al2O3 and Pt-Au/Al2O3 catalysts. The addition of ceria on alumina decreased the total acidity of these catalysts, resulting in lower performance. The 100-h stability test showed that the Pt-Au/Al2O3 catalyst was active and durable, but the selectivity towards the total oxidation products needs improvement. The results suggest that, with the Au-containing Al2O3-supported catalysts, DCM decomposition mainly occurs via direct DCM hydrolysis into formaldehyde and HCl followed by the oxidation of formaldehyde into CO and CO2.
