Highly selective colorimetric detection and preconcentration of Bi(III) ions by dithizone complexes anchored onto mesoporous TiO2.

ABSTRACT: We successfully developed a single-step detection and removal unit for Bi(III) ions based on dithizone (DZ) anchored on mesoporous TiO2 with rapid colorometric response and high selectivity for the first time. [(DZ)3-Bi] complex is easily separated and collected by mesoporous TiO2 as adsorbent and preconcentrator without any color change of the produced complex onto the surface of mesoporous TiO2 (TiO2-[(DZ)3-Bi]) at different Bi(III) concentrations. This is because highly potent mesoporous TiO2 architecture provides proficient channeling or movement of Bi(III) ions for efficient binding of metal ion, and the simultaneous excellent adsorbing nature of mesoporous TiO2 provides an extra plane for the removal of metal ions.

Adsorptive colorimetric determination of chromium(VI) ions at ultratrace levels using amine functionalized mesoporous silica.

Project description:There is an urgent need for a rapid, affordable and sensitive analytical method for periodic monitoring of heavy metals in water bodies. Herein, we report for the first time a versatile method for ultratrace level metal detection based on colorimetric sensing. The method integrates preconcentration using a nanomaterial with a colorimetric assay performed directly on the metal-enriched nanomaterial surface. This method circumvents the need for tedious sample pre-processing steps and the complex development of colorimetric probes, thereby reducing the complexity of the analytical procedure. The efficacy of the proposed method was demonstrated for chromium(VI) ions detection in water samples. Amine functionalized mesoporous silica (AMS) obtained from a one-pot synthesis was utilized as a pre-concentration material. The structural and chemical analysis of AMS was conducted to confirm its physico-chemical properties. The pre-concentration conditions were optimized to maximise the colorimetric signal. AMS exhibited a discernible colour change from white to purple (visible to the naked eye) for trace Cr(VI) ions concentration as low as 0.5 μg L-1. This method shows high selectivity for Cr(VI) ions with no colorimetric signal from other metal ions. We believe our method of analysis has a high scope for de-centralized monitoring of organic/inorganic pollutants in resource-constrained settings.

Bio-sorption of a bi-solute system of copper and lead ions onto banana peels: characterization and optimization.

Project description:PurposeBanana peel was used as a low-cost adsorbent for the removal of Cu and Pb ions from aqueous solution in a binary system.MethodsThe interactive effects of the operating parameters such as initial concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage and particle size were studied in a batch mode using central composite design. The characterizations of banana peels were done using point of zero charge (pHpzc), Fourier infrared transform (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and elemental composition (EDS).ResultThe point of zero charge of banana peels was determined to be 4.83. The FTIR, SEM and EDS showed the functional groups, surface morphology and elemental composition respectively before and after the adsorption process. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed a good fit of coefficient of determination (R2) for Cu and Pb being 0.998 and 0.988 respectively. The percentage removal of Cu and Pb increased with increasing adsorbent dosage, however, the bio-sorption capacity of Pb was greater than Cu. The optimized variable conditions for the bio-sorption of Cu and Pb using banana peel gave 99.79% and 88.94% removal for Pb and Cu respectively with initial concentration of 100 mg/L, pH 5, adsorbent dosage of 1 g and particle size of 75 μm. The above condition gave desirability of 0.959, which denotes that the optimum conditions are acceptable.ConclusionThe regression model and the agreement between the experimental and predicted values confirmed the validity of second-order polynomial equation for the bio-sorption of Cu and Pb using banana peels.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s40201-021-00632-x.

Negative Oxygen Ions Production by Superamphiphobic and Antibacterial TiO2/Cu2O Composite Film Anchored on Wooden Substrates.

Project description:According to statistics, early in the 20th century, the proportion of positive and negative air ions on the earth is 1 : 1.2. However, after more than one century, the equilibrium state of the proportion had an obvious change, which the proportion of positive and negative air ions became 1.2 : 1, leading to a surrounding of positive air ions in human living environment. Therefore, it is urgent to adopt effective methods to improve the proportion of negative oxygen ions, which are known as "air vitamin". In this study, negative oxygen ions production by the TiO2/Cu2O-treated wood under UV irradiation was first reported. Anatase TiO2 particles with Cu2O particles were doped on wooden substrates through a two-step method and further modification is employed to create remarkable superamphiphobic surface. The effect of Cu2O particles dopant on the negative oxygen ions production of the TiO2-treated wood was investigated. The results showed that the production of negative oxygen ions was drastically improved by doping with Cu2O particles under UV irradiation. The wood modified with TiO2/Cu2O composite film after hydrophobization is imparted with superamphiphobicity, antibacterial actions against Escherichia coli, and negative oxygen ions production under UV irradiation.

Highly sensitive colorimetric detection of Cd(ii) based on silica sol modified with dithizone and cationic surfactant.

Project description:The cadmium ion (Cd2+) is highly poisonous and nondegradable and easily bioaccumulates through the food chain. Therefore, it is crucial to develop cost-effective chemical sensors for Cd2+ with fast response time, high selectivity, and very low detection limits. In this study, a colorimetric sensor for the determination of Cd2+ was fabricated by modifying silica sol with dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and dithizone (DZ). Cd2+ formed a complex with DZ, changing the solution color immediately from purple to orange prior to detection using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry and a customized Cd analyzer for the precipitate. Under the optimum conditions, the developed Cd2+ sensor had a linear range of 0.01-0.25 mg L-1, a low limit of detection of 5.0 μg L-1, and outstanding repeatability. This sensor also showed good precision, with the relative standard deviations of less than 2.59% and 3.24% for the intra- and inter-day data, respectively. The proposed colorimetric method was successfully applied to determine Cd2+ in environmental water samples, and the results were comparable to those obtained using standard atomic absorption spectrometry. Moreover, quantitative analysis was conducted using the customized Cd analyzer to estimate the color intensity change, without requiring sophisticated scientific instruments. This colorimetric sensor can be used for the portable, cost-effective, and rapid on-site detection of Cd2+ in environmental water samples.

A novel double metal-dithizone functionalized polyurethane electrospun nanofiber and film for colorimetric determination of hexavalent chromium.

Project description:This work proposes a highly specific method of Cr6+ determination based on the double reactions of two metals, Co2+ with dithizone to form a (DTZ)-Co2+ complex, and the replacement of Co2+ in the formed complex with Cr6+. The fast degradation of DTZ in solution in wet analysis was overcome by preparing dithizone functionalized polyurethane nanofibers that were electrospun into a membrane (DTZ/PU-NF) and a microwell plate film (DTZ/PU-MPF). For comparison, the performance of diphenylcarbazide (DPC), a currently used complexing agent for Cr6+, was also investigated. Colour changes were detected as red-green-blue values. The DTZ/PU-NF was smooth, with an average diameter of 384.09 nm and no bead appeared. A dense network structure was formed. The best formulation of DTZ, PU and Co2+ was also applied as a microwell plate film. In the presence of Cr6+, the colour of DTZ-Co2+ changed from red to magenta. Among the three studied methods, the colorimetric DTZ-Co2+/PU-NF presented the best results. Its linearity range was 0.001-1.0 mg L-1, with a regression equation of Cr6+ = -0.189 + (0.0056 × red) + (0.0086 × green) - (0.0129 × blue), R 2 of 0.990. The limit of detection was 0.001 mg L-1 and the precision was 1.7%. The applicability of DTZ/PU-NF was validated for Cr6+ in vegetable oils with recoveries of 89.5-116.8%. The sensitivity of DTZ/PU-NF was ten times higher than that of DTZ/PU-MPF. The methods based on DTZ-Co2+/PU-NF and DTZ-Co2+/PU-MPF proved to be highly selective, rapid, user-friendly, simple and reliable.

Feather-like Gold Nanostructures Anchored onto 3D Mesoporous Laser-Scribed Graphene: A Highly Sensitive Platform for Enzymeless Glucose Electrochemical Detection in Neutral Media.

Project description:The authors present a novel sensing platform for a disposable electrochemical, non-enzymatic glucose sensor strip at physiological pH. The sensing material is based on dendritic gold nanostructures (AuNs) resembling feather branches, which are electrodeposited onto a laser-scribed 3D graphene electrode (LSGE). The LSGEs were fabricated via a one-step laser scribing process on a commercially available polyimide sheet. This study investigates several parameters that influence the morphology of the deposited Au nanostructures and the catalytic activity toward glucose electro-oxidation. The electrocatalytic activity of the AuNs-LSGE was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and amperometry and was compared to commercially available carbon electrodes prepared under the same electrodeposition conditions. The sensor demonstrated good stability and high selectivity of the amperometric response in the presence of interfering agents, such as ascorbic acid, when a Nafion membrane was applied over the electrode surface. The proposed sensing strategy offers a wide linear detection range, from 0.5 to 20 mM, which covers normal and elevated levels of glucose in the blood, with a detection limit of 0.21 mM. The AuNs-LSGE platform exhibits great potential for use as a disposable glucose sensor strip for point-of-care applications, including self-monitoring and food management. Its non-enzymatic features reduce dependence on enzymes, making it suitable for practical and cost-effective biosensing solutions.

Gold nanoparticles-anchored peptides enable precise colorimetric estimation of microplastics.

Project description:Microplastics (MPs, particle size < 5 mm) are an emerging contaminant in aquatic environment, which have attracted increasing attention worldwide. In this study, a colorimetric method for MPs detection was developed based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)-anchored peptides (LCI or TA2), which are able to specifically recognize and adhere to polypropylene (PP) or polystyrene (PS). The AuNPs-anchored peptides accumulated on the surface of MPs, rendering a color change from red to gray-blue and transforming the surface plasmon absorption intensity and wavelength. The designed method presented high selectivity, stability, and reproducibility, with a detection range of 2.5-15 μg/mL. The results demonstrated that the developed approach will be valuable in the precise, facile, and cost-effective estimation of MPs in different matrices, regulating the control over MPs pollution and its hazardous impact on health and ecosystems.

Lactoferrin-Anchored Tannylated Mesoporous Silica Nanomaterials for Enhanced Osteo-Differentiation Ability.

Project description:In the present study, we created lactoferrin-anchored mesoporous silica nanomaterials with absorbed tannic acid (LF/TA-MSNs) and evaluated the effect of these LF/TA-MSNs on the in vitro osteo-differentiation ability of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) by testing alkaline phosphatase (ALP) level, calcium accumulation, and expression of osteo-differentiation-specific genes, including osteocalcin (OCN) and osteopontin (OPN). Both bare MSNs and LF/TA-MSNs exhibited round nano-particle structures. The LF/TA-MSNs demonstrated prolonged LF release for up to 28 days. Treatment of ADSCs with LF (50 μg)/TA-MSNs resulted in markedly higher ALP level and calcium accumulation compared to treatment with LF (10 μg)/TA-MSNs or bare MSNs. Furthermore, LF (50 μg)/TA-MSNs remarkably increased mRNA levels of osteo-differentiation-specific genes, including OCN and OPN, compared to MSNs or LF (10 μg)/TA-MSNs. Together, these data suggest that the ability of LF/TA-MSNs to enhance osteo-differentiation of ADSCs make them a possible nanovehicle for bone healing and bone regeneration in patients with bone defect or disease.

Polyaspartic acid-anchored mesoporous silica nanoparticles for pH-responsive doxorubicin release.

Project description:BackgroundNanotechnology-based drug delivery systems exhibit promising therapeutic efficacy in cancer chemotherapy. However, ideal nano drug carriers are supposed to be sufficiently internalized into cancer cells and then release therapeutic cargoes in response to certain intracellular stimuli, which has never been an easy task to achieve.ObjectiveThis study is to design mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs)-based pH-responsive nano drug delivery system that is effectively internalized into cancer cells and then release drug in response to lysosomal/endosomal acidified environment.MethodsWe synthesized MSNs by sol-gel method. Doxorubicin (DOX) was encapsulated into the pores as a model drug. Polyaspartic acid (PAsA) was anchored on the surface of mesoporous MSNs (P-MSNs) as a gatekeeper via amide linkage and endowed MSNs with positive charge.ResultsIn vitro release analysis demonstrated enhanced DOX release from DOX-loaded PAsA-anchored MSNs (DOX@P-MSNs) under endosomal/lysosomal acidic pH condition. Moreover, more DOX@P-MSNs were internalized into HepG2 cells than DOX-loaded MSNs (DOX@MSNs) and free DOX revealed by flow cytometry. Likewise, confocal microscopic images revealed that DOX@P-MSNs effectively released DOX and translocated to the nucleus. Much stronger cytotoxicity of DOX@P-MSNs against HepG2 cells was observed compared with DOX@MSNs and free DOX.ConclusionDOX@P-MSNs were successfully fabricated and achieved pH-responsive DOX release. We anticipated this nanotherapeutics might be suitable contenders for future in vivo cancer chemotherapeutic applications.

Sensitive distance-based paper-based quantification of mercury ions using carbon nanodots and heating-based preconcentration.

Project description:This article reports the first fluorescent distance-based paper device coupled with an evaporating preconcentration system for determining trace mercury ions (Hg2+) in water. The fluorescent nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) were synthesized by a one-step microwave method using citric acid and ethylenediamine. The fluorescence turn-off of the NCDs in the presence of Hg2+ was visualized with a common black light, and the distance of the quenched fluorescence correlated to Hg2+ concentration. The optimal conditions for pH, NCD concentration, sample volume, and reaction time were investigated. Heating preconcentration was used to improve the detection limits of the fluorescent distance-based paper device by a factor of 100. Under the optimal conditions, the naked eye limit of detection (LOD) was 5 μg L-1 Hg2+. This LOD is sufficient for monitoring drinking water where the maximum allowable mercury level is 6 μg L-1 as established by the World Health Organization (WHO). The fluorescent distance-based paper device was successfully applied for Hg2+ quantification in water samples without interference from other cations. The proposed method provides several advantages over atomic absorption spectroscopy including ease of use, inexpensive material and fabrication, and portability. In addition, the devices are simple to fabricate and have a long shelf-life (>5 months).
