Metal hydrides form halogen bonds: measurement of energetics of binding.

ABSTRACT: The formation of halogen bonds from iodopentafluorobenzene and 1-iodoperfluorohexane to a series of bis(η(5)-cyclopentadienyl)metal hydrides (Cp2TaH3, 1; Cp2MH2, M = Mo, 2, M = W, 3; Cp2ReH, 4; Cp2Ta(H)CO, 5; Cp = η(5)-cyclopentadienyl) is demonstrated by (1)H NMR spectroscopy. Interaction enthalpies and entropies for complex 1 with C6F5I and C6F13I are reported (ΔH° = -10.9 ± 0.4 and -11.8 ± 0.3 kJ/mol; ΔS° = -38 ± 2 and -34 ± 2 J/(mol·K), respectively) and found to be stronger than those for 1 with the hydrogen-bond donor indole (ΔH° = -7.3 ± 0.1 kJ/mol, ΔS° = -24 ± 1 J/(mol·K)). For the more reactive complexes 2-5, measurements are limited to determination of their low-temperature (212 K) association constants with C6F5I as 2.9 ± 0.2, 2.5 ± 0.1, <1.5, and 12.5 ± 0.3 M(-1), respectively.

Halogen bonds in biological molecules.

Project description:Short oxygen-halogen interactions have been known in organic chemistry since the 1950s and recently have been exploited in the design of supramolecular assemblies. The present survey of protein and nucleic acid structures reveals similar halogen bonds as potentially stabilizing inter- and intramolecular interactions that can affect ligand binding and molecular folding. A halogen bond in biomolecules can be defined as a short C-X...O-Y interaction (C-X is a carbon-bonded chlorine, bromine, or iodine, and O-Y is a carbonyl, hydroxyl, charged carboxylate, or phosphate group), where the X...O distance is less than or equal to the sums of the respective van der Waals radii (3.27 A for Cl...O, 3.37 A for Br...O, and 3.50 A for I...O) and can conform to the geometry seen in small molecules, with the C-X...O angle approximately 165 degrees (consistent with a strong directional polarization of the halogen) and the X...O-Y angle approximately 120 degrees . Alternative geometries can be imposed by the more complex environment found in biomolecules, depending on which of the two types of donor systems are involved in the interaction: (i) the lone pair electrons of oxygen (and, to a lesser extent, nitrogen and sulfur) atoms or (ii) the delocalized pi -electrons of peptide bonds or carboxylate or amide groups. Thus, the specific geometry and diversity of the interacting partners of halogen bonds offer new and versatile tools for the design of ligands as drugs and materials in nanotechnology.

Probing Halogen Bonds by Scalar Couplings.

Project description:As halogen bonding is a weak, transient interaction, its description in solution is challenging. We demonstrate that scalar coupling constants (J) are modulated by halogen bonding. The binding-induced magnitude change of one-bond couplings, even up to five bonds from the interaction site, correlates to the interaction strength. We demonstrate this using the NMR data of 42 halogen-bonded complexes in dichloromethane solution and by quantum chemical calculations. Our observation puts scalar couplings into the toolbox of methods for characterization of halogen bond complexes in solution and paves the way for their applicability for other types of weak σ-hole interactions.

Directing macromolecular conformation through halogen bonds.

Project description:The halogen bond, a noncovalent interaction involving polarizable chlorine, bromine, or iodine molecular substituents, is now being exploited to control the assembly of small molecules in the design of supramolecular complexes and new materials. We demonstrate that a halogen bond formed between a brominated uracil and phosphate oxygen can be engineered to direct the conformation of a biological molecule, in this case to define the conformational isomer of a four-stranded DNA junction when placed in direct competition against a classic hydrogen bond. As a result, this bromine interaction is estimated to be approximately 2-5 kcal/mol stronger than the analogous hydrogen bond in this environment, depending on the geometry of the halogen bond. This study helps to establish halogen bonding as a potential tool for the rational design and construction of molecular materials with DNA and other biological macromolecules.

Matere Bonds vs. Multivalent Halogen and Chalcogen Bonds: Three Case Studies.

Project description:The term matere bond has been recently used to refer to an attractive noncovalent interaction between any element of group 7 acting as an electrophile and any atom (or group of atoms) acting as a nucleophile. The utilization of metals such as σ-hole donors is starting to attract the attention of the scientific community. In this manuscript, a comparison between matere bonds and well-known σ-hole interactions (halogen and chalcogen bonds) is carried out using three X-ray structures, retrieved from the Cambridge structural database (CSD), and density functional theory calculations (DFT). The novelty of this work resides in the utilization of a neutral Re(VII) system as the matere bond donor and multivalent chalcogen and halogen donors. In fact, as far as our knowledge extends, the description of σ-hole interactions in Se(VI) is unprecedented in the literature. The σ-hole interactions in Re(VII), Se(VI) and Cl(VII) electron acceptors are analyzed and compared using several computational tools.

Catalysis with Pnictogen, Chalcogen, and Halogen Bonds.

Project description:Halogen- and chalcogen-based σ-hole interactions have recently received increased interest in non-covalent organocatalysis. However, the closely related pnictogen bonds have been neglected. In this study, we introduce conceptually simple, neutral, and monodentate pnictogen-bonding catalysts. Solution and in silico binding studies, together with high catalytic activity in chloride abstraction reactions, yield compelling evidence for operational pnictogen bonds. The depth of the σ holes is easily varied with different substituents. Comparison with homologous halogen- and chalcogen-bonding catalysts shows an increase in activity from main group VII to V and from row 3 to 5 in the periodic table. Pnictogen bonds from antimony thus emerged as by far the best among the elements covered, a finding that provides most intriguing perspectives for future applications in catalysis and beyond.

Unravelling strong temperature-dependence of JHD in transition metal hydrides: solvation and non-covalent interactions versus temperature-elastic H-H bonds.

Project description:A number of transition metal hydrides reveal intriguing temperature-dependent JHD in their deuterated derivatives and possibly the temperature dependent hydrogen-hydrogen distance (r(H-H)) as well. Previously, theoretical studies rationalized JHD and r(H-H) changes in such compounds through a "temperature-elastic" structure model with a significant population of vibrational states in an anharmonic potential. Based on the first variable temperature neutron diffraction study of a relevant complex, (p-H-POCOP)IrH2, observation of its elusive counterpart with longer r(H-H), crystallized as an adduct with C6F5I, and thorough spectroscopic and computational study, we argue that the model involving isomeric species in solution at least in some cases is more relevant. The existence of such isomers is enabled or enhanced by solvation and weak non-covalent interactions with solvent, such as halogen or dihydrogen bonds. "Non-classical" hydrides with r(H-H) ≈ 1.0-1.6 Å are especially sensitive to the above-mentioned factors.

Halogen Bonds of Halogen(I) Ions─Where Are We and Where to Go?

Project description:Halenium ions, X+, are particularly strong halogen-bond donors that interact with two Lewis bases simultaneously to form linear [D···X···D]+-type halonium complexes. Their three-center, four-electron halogen bond is both fundamentally interesting and technologically valuable as it tames the reactivity of halogen(I) ions, opening up new horizons in a variety of fields including synthetic organic and supramolecular chemistry. Understanding this bonding situation enables the development of improved halogen(I) transfer reactions and of advanced functional materials. Following a decade of investigations of basic principles, the range of applications is now rapidly widening. In this Perspective, we assess the status of the field and identify its key advances and the main bottlenecks. Clearing common misunderstandings that may hinder future progress, we aim to inspire and direct future research efforts.

Here, this Hydrogen Bond enhanced Halogen Bond (HBeXB) plays a clear role in a catalyst. Our HBeXB catalyst improves product conversion in a halide abstraction reaction over a traditional halogen bonding derivative.

Activation of a Metal-Halogen Bond by Halogen Bonding.

Project description:In recent years, the non-covalent interaction of halogen bonding (XB) has found increasing application in organocatalysis. However, reports of the activation of metal-ligand bonds by XB have so far been limited to a few reactions with elemental iodine or bromine. Herein, we present the activation of metal-halogen bonds by two classes of inert halogen bond donors and the use of the resulting activated complexes in homogenous gold catalysis. The only recently explored class of iodolium derivatives were shown to be effective activators in two test reactions and their activity could be modulated by blocking of the Lewis acidic sites. Bis(benzimidazolium)-based halogen bonding activators provided even more rapid conversion, while the non-iodinated reference compound showed little activity. The role of halogen bonding in the activation of metal-halogen bonds was further investigated by NMR experiments and DFT calculations, which support the mode of activation occurring via halogen bonding.
