Soft plasmons with stretchable spectroscopic response based on thermally patterned gold nanoparticles.

ABSTRACT: Flexible photonic crystals are attractive devices owing to their multifold tunable parameters additionally introduced by soft substrates or by nanostructured, nano-doped, or nano-embedded soft matters. This not only extends significantly the intrinsic functions of photonic crystals, but also facilitates easy integration of the photonic crystal device into various optoelectronic and sensing systems. So far, flexible metallic photonic structures have been constructed on micrometer scales with complex fabrication procedures. Much simpler and more reproducible methods are expected to achieve such metamaterials in large scales and at low costs. In address to these challenges, we developed a straightforward approach to create soft plasmonic photonic crystals consisting of gold nanolines arranged on stretchable substrates with nanoscale periods, centimeter-scale areas, and high reproducibility using annealed gold nanoparticle colloids.

Planar patterned stretchable electrode arrays based on flexible printed circuits.

Project description:For stretchable electronics to achieve broad industrial application, they must be reliable to manufacture and must perform robustly while undergoing large deformations. We present a new strategy for creating planar stretchable electronics and demonstrate one such device, a stretchable microelectrode array based on flex circuit technology. Stretchability is achieved through novel, rationally designed perforations that provide islands of low strain and continuous low-strain pathways for conductive traces. This approach enables the device to maintain constant electrical properties and planarity while undergoing applied strains up to 15%. Materials selection is not limited to polyimide composite devices and can potentially be implemented with either soft or hard substrates and can incorporate standard metals or new nano-engineered conductors. By using standard flex circuit technology, our planar microelectrode device achieved constant resistances for strains up to 20% with less than a 4% resistance offset over 120,000 cycles at 10% strain.

Liquid Metal Patterned Stretchable and Soft Capacitive Sensor with Enhanced Dielectric Property Enabled by Graphite Nanofiber Fillers.

Project description:In this work, we introduce liquid metal patterned stretchable and soft capacitive sensor with enhanced dielectric properties enabled by graphite nanofiber (GNF) fillers dispersed in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. We oxidized gallium-based liquid metal that exhibited excellent wetting behavior on the surface of the composites to enable patterning of the electrodes by a facile stencil printing. The fluidic behavior of the liquid metal electrode and modulated dielectric properties of the composite (k = 6.41 ± 0.092@6 wt % at 1 kHz) was utilized to fabricate stretchable and soft capacitive sensor with ability to distinguish various hand motions.

Optical Plasmons of Individual Gold Nanosponges.

Project description:The search for novel plasmonic nanostructures, which can act simultaneously as optical detectors and stimulators, is crucial for many applications in the fields of biosensing, electro- and photocatalysis, electrochemistry, and biofuel generation. In most of these areas, a large surface-to-volume ratio, as well as high density of active surface sites, is desirable. We investigate sponge-like, that is, fully porous, nanoparticles, called nanosponges, where both the gold and the air phase are fully percolated in three dimensions. We correlate, on a single nanoparticle basis, their optical scattering spectra (using dark field microscopy) with their individual morphology (using electron microscopy). We find that the scattering spectra of nanosponges depend only weakly on their size and outer shape, but are greatly influenced by their unique percolation, in qualitative agreement with numerical simulations.

Label-Free, Rapid and Facile Gold-Nanoparticles-Based Assay as a Potential Spectroscopic Tool for Trastuzumab Quantification.

Project description:Monoclonal antibody-based immunotherapy is one of the pillars of cancer treatment. However, for an efficient and personalized approach to the therapy, a quantitative evaluation of the right dose for each patient is required. In this study, we developed a simple, label-free, and rapid approach to quantify Trastuzumab, a humanized IgG1 monoclonal antibody used against human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), overexpressed in breast cancer patients, based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The central idea of this work was to use gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as plasmonic scaffolds, decorated with HER2 binders mixed with oligo-ethylene glycol (OEG) molecules, to tune the surface density of the attached macromolecules and to minimize nonspecific binding events. Specifically, we characterized and optimized a self-assembled monolayer of mixed alkylthiols terminated with nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), and OEG3 as a spacing ligand to achieve both excellent dispersibility and high reliability in protein immobilization. The successful immobilization of histidine-tagged HER2 (His-tagged HER2) on NTA via cobalt (II) chelates was demonstrated, confirming the fully functional attachment of the proteins to the AuNP surface. The proposed design demonstrates the capability of producing a clear readout that enables the transduction of a Trastuzumab/HER2 binding event into optical signals based on the wavelength shifts in LSPR, which allowed for detecting clinically relevant concentrations of Trastuzumab down to 300 ng/mL in the buffer and 2 µg/mL in the diluted serum. This strategy was found to be fast and highly specific to Trastuzumab. These findings make the present platform an auspicious tool for developing affordable bio-nanosensors.

Auric Chloride Induced Micellization on Fractal Patterned Dicationic Amphiphiles and Stabilization of Gold Nanoparticles.

Project description:The present article reports the development of sunlight-mediated rapid synthesis of bile acid derived dicationic amphiphiles, namely, dicationic cysteamine-conjugated cholic acid (DCaC), dicationic cysteamine-conjugated deoxycholic acid (DCaDC), and dicationic cysteamine-conjugated lithocholic acid (DCaLC) by adopting thiol-yne click chemistry approach. The auric chloride (AuHCl4) induced micellization of amphiphiles from fractal pattern to chainlike aggregates was examined by critical micelle concentration measurements, quenching studies, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and optical microscopy techniques. The micelles thus formed act as ideal templates for the stabilization of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and exhibit good stability for more than 6 months. The synthesized AuNPs were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, DLS, zeta potential, and contact angle measurements. These NPs showed high salt tolerance, and the levels were found to be 420, 460, and 580 mM for DCaC-, DCaDC-, and DCaLC-capped AuNPs, respectively.

Self-Patterned Stretchable Electrode Based on Silver Nanowire Bundle Mesh Developed by Liquid Bridge Evaporation.

Project description:A new strategy is required to realize a low-cost stretchable electrode while realizing high stretchability, conductivity, and manufacturability. In this study, we fabricated a self-patterned stretchable electrode using a simple and scalable process. The stretchable electrode is composed of a bridged square-shaped (BSS) AgNW bundle mesh developed by liquid bridge evaporation and a stretchable polymer matrix patterned with a microcavity array. Owing to the BSS structure and microcavity array, which effectively concentrate the applied strain on the deformable square region of the BSS structure under tensile stretching, the stretchable electrode exhibits high stretchability with a low ΔR/R0 of 10.3 at a strain of 40%. Furthermore, by exploiting the self-patterning ability-attributable to the difference in the ability to form liquid bridges according to the distance between microstructures-we successfully demonstrated a stretchable AgNW bundle mesh with complex patterns without using additional patterning processes. In particular, stretchable electrodes were fabricated by spray coating and bar coating, which are widely used in industry for low-cost mass production. We believe that this study significantly contributes to the commercialization of stretchable electronics while achieving high performance and complex patterns, such as stretchable displays and electronic skin.

Laser-patterned metallic interconnections for all stretchable organic electrochemical transistors.

Project description:We describe a process allowing the patterning of fully stretchable organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). The device consists of an active stretchable area connected with stretchable metallic interconnections. The current literature does not provide a complete, simple and accurate process using the standard thin film microelectronic techniques allowing the creation of such sensors. An innovative patterning process based on the combination of laser ablation and thermal release tape ensures the fabrication of highly stretchable metallic lines - encapsulated in polydimethylsiloxane - from conventional aluminium tape. State-of-the-art stretchability up to 70% combined with ultra-low mOhms resistance is demonstrated. We present a photolithographic process to pattern the organic active area onto stretchable substrate. Finally the formulation of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) is tuned to achieve an OECT with a maximum stretchability of 38% while maintaining transconductance up to 0.35 mS and channel current as high as 0.2 mA.
