Graphene fibres are continuously prepared from universal graphene oxide precursors by a novel hydrogel-assisted spinning method. With assistance of a rolling process, meters of ribbon-like GFs, or GRs with improved conductivity, tensile strength, and a long-range ordered compact layer structure are successfully obtained. Project description:Recent developments in graphene oxide fibre (GO) processing include exciting demonstrations of hand woven textile structures. However, it is uncertain whether the fibres produced can meet the processing requirements of conventional textile manufacturing. This work reports for the first time the production of highly flexible and tough GO fibres that can be knitted using textile machinery. The GO fibres are made by using a dry-jet wet-spinning method, which allows drawing of the spinning solution (the GO dispersion) in several stages of the fibre spinning process. The coagulation composition and spinning conditions are evaluated in detail, which led to the production of densely packed fibres with near-circular cross-sections and highly ordered GO domains. The results are knittable GO fibres with Young's modulus of ~7.9 GPa, tensile strength of ~135.8 MPa, breaking strain of ~5.9%, and toughness of ~5.7 MJ m(-3). The combination of suitable spinning method, coagulation composition, and spinning conditions led to GO fibres with remarkable toughness; the key factor in their successful knitting. This work highlights important progress in realising the full potential of GO fibres as a new class of textile.

Project description:The production of highly stable, defect-free, and electrically conducting 3D graphene structures from graphene oxide precursors is challenging. This is because graphene oxide is a metastable material whose structure and chemistry evolve due to aging. Aging changes the relative composition of oxygen functional groups attached to the graphene oxide and negatively impacts the fabrication and properties of reduced graphene oxide. Here, we report a universal strategy to reverse the aging of graphene oxide precursors using oxygen plasma treatment. This treatment decreases the size of graphene oxide flakes and restores negative zeta potential and suspension stability in water, enabling the fabrication of compact and mechanically stable graphene aerogels using hydrothermal synthesis. Moreover, we employ high-temperature annealing to remove oxygen-containing functionalities and repair the lattice defects in reduced graphene oxide. This method allows obtaining highly electrically conducting graphene aerogels with electrical conductivity of 390 S/m and low defect density. The role of carboxyl, hydroxyl, epoxide, and ketonic oxygen species is thoroughly investigated using X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopies. Our study provides unique insight into the chemical transformations occurring during the aging and thermal reduction of graphene oxide from room temperature up to 2700 °C.

Project description:This work aims to evaluate the potential of using textile waste in smart textile applications in the form of a hybrid fibre with electrical properties. The bio-based electrically conductive fibres were fabricated from waste wool and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) via wet spinning with different wool content. The control PAN and hybrid fibre produced with the highest amount of wool content (25% w/v) were coated with graphene oxide (GO) using the "brushing and drying" technique. The GO nanosheets coated control PAN and wool/PAN hybrid fibres were chemically reduced through hydrazine vapour exposure. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed the presence of both protein and nitrile peaks in the wool/PAN hybrid fibres, although the amide I and amide A groups had disappeared, due to the dissolution of wool. The morphological and structural analysis revealed effective coating and reduction of the fibres through GO nanosheets and hydrazine, respectively. The hybrid fibre showed higher electrical conductivity (~ 180 S/cm) compared to the control PAN fibres (~ 95 S/cm), confirming an effective bonding between the hydroxyl and carboxylic groups of the GO sheets and the amino groups of wool evidenced by chemical analysis. Hence, the graphene oxide incorporated wool/PAN hybrid fibres may provide a promising solution for eco-friendly smart textile applications.

Project description:The literature on the contribution of elastic fibre deposition to alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) is limited. We studied: (1) 180 liver biopsies from ARLD patients; (2) 20 ARLD explant livers; (3) 213 liver biopsies with non-ARLD injury. Elastic fibres were assessed in terms of their distribution around hepatocytes [pericellular elastosis (PCE)] and within bridging fibrous septa (septal elastosis) and scored using a semiquantitative system. We also investigated the composition of the elastic fibres (oxytalan, elaunin and mature elastic fibres) in 20 cases. PCE was associated with steatohepatitis in ARLD patients and with ARLD when compared to non-ARLD cases (p < 0.001). Oxytalan fibres were identified in PCE in ARLD biopsies and broken dense perisinusoidal mature elastic fibres in explanted livers. Septal elastosis increased from intermediate to advanced fibrosis stage. Early septal elastosis contained oxytalan fibres, whereas septal elastosis at more advanced stages contained mainly mature elastic fibres. PCE is a typical feature of steatohepatitis in ARLD and includes oxytalan fibres. Septal elastosis is a gradual process with a transition from oxytalan to mature elastic fibres usually present in explanted livers. There may be different dynamics in the assembly and reabsorption of pericellular and septal elastic fibres, and a potential role for stratification of patients with advanced stage ARLD.

Project description:Macroscopic fibres assembled from two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets are new and impressing type of fibre materials besides those from one-dimensional (1D) polymers, such as graphene fibres. However, the preparation and property-enhancing technologies of these fibres follow those from 1D polymers by improving the orientation along the fibre axis, leading to non-optimized microstructures and low integrated performances. Here, we show a concept of bidirectionally promoting the assembly order, making graphene fibres achieve synergistically improved mechanical and thermal properties. Concentric arrangement of graphene oxide sheets in the cross-section and alignment along fibre axis are realized by multiple shear-flow fields, which bidirectionally promotes the sheet-order of graphene sheets in solid fibres, generates densified and crystalline graphitic structures, and produces graphene fibres with ultrahigh modulus (901 GPa) and thermal conductivity (1660 W m-1 K-1). We believe that the concept would enhance both scientific and technological cognition of the assembly process of 2D nanosheets.

Project description:Here, we reported an ingenious fabrication of moisture responsive graphene-based actuator via unilateral two-beam laser interference (TBLI) treatment of graphene oxide (GO) papers. TBLI technique has been recognized as a representative photoreduction and patterning strategy for hierarchical structuring of GO. The GO paper can be reduced and cut into grating-like periodic reduced graphene oxide (RGO) microstructures due to laser ablation effect. However, the lower light transmittance of the thick GO paper and the corresponding thermal relaxation phenomenon make it impossible to trigger complete reduction, leading to the formation of the anisotropic GO/reduced GO (RGO) bilayer structure. Interestingly, the RGO side that feature lower OCGs and higher roughness shows strong water adsorption due to the formation of micronanostructures. Due to the different water adsorption capacities of the two sides, a flower moisture-responsive actuator has been fabricated, which exhibits "opening" and "closing" behavior under different humidity conditions.

Project description:Combining polymers with small amounts of stiff carbon-based nanofillers such as graphene or graphene oxide is expected to yield low-density nanocomposites with exceptional mechanical properties. However, such nanocomposites have remained elusive because of incompatibilities between fillers and polymers that are further compounded by processing difficulties. Here we report a water-based process to obtain highly reinforced nanocomposite films by simple mixing of two liquid crystalline solutions: a colloidal nematic phase comprised of graphene oxide platelets and a nematic phase formed by a rod-like high-performance aramid. Upon drying the resulting hybrid biaxial nematic phase, we obtain robust, structural nanocomposites reinforced with graphene oxide.

Project description:The influence of oxidative debris (OD) present in as-prepared graphene oxide (GO) suspensions on proteins and its toxicity to human embryonic kidney cells (HEK-293T) are reported here. The OD was removed by repeated washing with aqueous ammonia to produce the corresponding base-washed GO (bwGO). The loading (w/w) of bovine serum albumin (BSA) was increased by 85% after base washing, whereas the loading of hemoglobin (Hb) and lysozyme (Lyz), respectively, was decreased by 160% and 100%. The secondary structures of 13 different proteins bound to bwGO were compared with the corresponding proteins bound to GO using the UV circular dichroism spectroscopy. There was a consistent loss of protein secondary structure with bwGO when compared with proteins bound to GO, but no correlation between either the isoelectric point or hydrophobicity of the protein and the extent of structure loss was observed. All enzymes bound to bwGO and GO indicated significant activities, and a strong correlation between the enzymatic activity and the extent of structure retention was noted, regardless of the presence or absence of OD. At low loadings (<100 μg/mL) both GO and bwGO showed excellent cell viability but substantial cytotoxicity (~40% cell death) was observed at high loadings (>100 μg/mL). In control studies, OD by itself did not alter the growth rate even after a 48-h incubation. Thus, the presence of OD in GO played a very important role in controlling the chemical and biological nature of the protein-GO interface and the presence of OD in GO improved its biological compatibility when compared to bwGO.

Project description:Flexible electronics have sparked significant interest in the development of electrically conductive polymer-based composite materials. While efforts are being made to fabricate these composites through laser integration techniques, a versatile methodology applicable to a broad range of thermoplastic polymers remains elusive. Moreover, the underlying mechanisms driving the formation of such composites are not thoroughly understood. Addressing this knowledge gap, our research focuses on the core processes determining the integration of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with polymers to engineer coatings that are not only flexible and robust but also exhibit electrical conductivity. Notably, we have identified a particular range of laser power densities (between 0.8 and 1.83 kW/cm2), which enables obtaining graphene polymer composite coatings for a large set of thermoplastic polymers. These laser parameters are primarily defined by the thermal properties of the polymers as confirmed by thermal analysis as well as numerical simulations. Scanning electron microscopy with elemental analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that conductivity can be achieved by two mechanisms-rGO integration and polymer carbonization. Additionally, high-speed videos allowed us to capture the graphene oxide (GO) modification and melt pool formation during laser processing. The cross-sectional analysis of the laser-processed samples showed that the convective flows are present in the polymer substrate explaining the observed behavior. Moreover, the practical application of our research is exemplified through the successful assembly of a conductive wristband for wearable devices. Our study not only fills a critical knowledge gap but also offers a tangible illustration of the potential impact of laser-induced rGO-polymer integration in materials science and engineering applications.

Project description:Biosensing methods and devices using graphene oxide (GO) have recently been explored for detection and quantification of specific biomolecules from body fluid samples, such as saliva, milk, urine, and serum. For a practical diagnostics application, any sensing system must show an absence of nonselective detection of abundant proteins in the fluid matrix. Because lysozyme is an abundant protein in these body fluids (e.g., around 21.4 and 7 μg/mL of lysozyme is found in human milk and saliva from healthy individuals, and more than 15 or even 100 μg/mL in patients suffering from leukemia, renal disease, and sarcoidosis), it may interfere with detections and quantification if it has strong interaction with GO. Therefore, one fundamental question that needs to be addressed before any development of GO based diagnostics method is how GO interacts with lysozyme. In this study, GO has demonstrated a strong interaction with lysozyme. This interaction is so strong that we are able to subsequently eliminate and separate lysozyme from aqueous solution onto the surface of GO. Furthermore, the strong electrostatic interaction also renders the selective adsorption of lysozyme on GO from a mixture of binary and ternary proteins. This selectivity is confirmed by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), fluorescence spectroscopy, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy.
