Cognitive development in children with new onset epilepsy.

ABSTRACT:

Aim

To characterize the prospective trajectory of cognitive development in children with new or recent onset epilepsy from baseline to 5 to 6 years after diagnosis.

Method

Sixty-nine children (40 males, 29 females; age 8-18y), with new or recent onset epilepsies underwent neuropsychological assessment shortly after diagnosis (Wave 1), 2 years (Wave 2), and 5 to 6 years after diagnosis (Wave 3). Intelligence, academic achievement, language, executive function, and psychomotor speed were evaluated. Sixty-two children (28 males, 34 females; age 8-18) with typical development served as a comparison group at each time point.
