Augmenting the Performance of Hydrogenase for Aerobic Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution via Solvent Tuning.

Project description:This work showcases the performance of [NiFeSe] hydrogenase from Desulfomicrobium baculatum for solar-driven hydrogen generation in a variety of organic-based deep eutectic solvents. Despite its well-known sensitivity towards air and organic solvents, the hydrogenase shows remarkable performance under an aerobic atmosphere in these solvents when paired with a TiO2 photocatalyst. Tuning the water content further increases hydrogen evolution activity to a TOF of 60±3 s-1 and quantum yield to 2.3±0.4 % under aerobic conditions, compared to a TOF of 4 s-1 in a purely aqueous solvent. Contrary to common belief, this work therefore demonstrates that placing natural hydrogenases into non-natural environments can enhance their intrinsic activity beyond their natural performance, paving the way for full water splitting using hydrogenases.

Activating a [FeFe] Hydrogenase Mimic for Hydrogen Evolution under Visible Light.

Project description:Inspired by the active center of the natural [FeFe] hydrogenases, we designed a compact and precious metal-free photosensitizer-catalyst dyad (PS-CAT) for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation. PS-CAT represents a prototype dyad comprising π-conjugated oligothiophenes as light absorbers. PS-CAT and its interaction with the sacrificial donor 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenylbenzimidazoline were studied by steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy coupled with electrochemical techniques and visible light-driven photocatalytic investigations. Operando EPR spectroscopy revealed the formation of an active [FeI Fe0 ] species-in accordance with theoretical calculations-presumably driving photocatalysis effectively (TON≈210).

Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution by a Synthetic [FeFe] Hydrogenase Mimic Encapsulated in a Porphyrin Cage.

Project description:The design of a biomimetic and fully base metal photocatalytic system for photocatalytic proton reduction in a homogeneous medium is described. A synthetic pyridylphosphole-appended [FeFe] hydrogenase mimic was encapsulated inside a supramolecular zinc porphyrin-based metal-organic cage structure Fe4 (Zn-L)6 . The binding is driven by the selective pyridine-zinc porphyrin interaction and results in the catalyst being bound strongly inside the hydrophobic cavity of the cage. Excitation of the capsule-forming porphyrin ligands with visible light while probing the IR spectrum confirmed that electron transfer takes place from the excited porphyrin cage to the catalyst residing inside the capsule. Light-driven proton reduction was achieved by irradiation of an acidic solution of the caged catalyst with visible light.

Hydrogen peroxide-assisted synthesis of oxygen-doped carbon nitride nanorods for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Project description:Polymer-derived carbon nitrides based photocatalysts are very promising for solar water splitting, CO2 reduction and environmental remediation. However, these photocatalysts still suffer from low visible light utilization efficiency, rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers and slow transfer kinetics. Herein, we report a hydrogen peroxide-assisted hydrothermal strategy to synthesize one-dimensional oxygen-doped carbon nitrides (OCN) for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. A possible self-assembly mechanism is discussed. Experimental results and theoretical calculations indicate that the as-synthesized one-dimensional OCN possess narrowed band gap energy and optimized band structure, which may allow more effective visible-light harvesting and facilitate photogenerated electron-hole pair separation and transfer. As a result, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rates improve from 10.4 μmol h-1 to 74.0 μmol h-1 under visible light (λ > 400 nm), which is among the best of the reported CN-based photocatalysts for visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution. This study provides a new avenue toward the development of highly efficient carbon nitrides based photocatalysts for photocatalytic applications.

Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution by co-catalyst-free TiO<sub>2</sub>/C bulk heterostructures synthesized under mild conditions.

Project description:Hydrogen production by photocatalytic water splitting is one of the most promising sustainable routes to store solar energy in the form of chemical bonds. To obtain significant H2 evolution rates (HERs) a variety of defective TiO2 catalysts were synthesized by means of procedures generally requiring highly energy-consuming treatments, e.g. hydrogenation. Even if a complete understanding of the relationship between defects, electronic structure and catalytic active sites is far from being achieved, the band gap narrowing and Ti3+-self-doping have been considered essential to date. In most reports a metal co-catalyst (commonly Pt) and a sacrificial electron donor (such as methanol) are used to improve HERs. Here we report the synthesis of TiO2/C bulk heterostructures, obtained from a hybrid TiO2-based gel by simple heat treatments at 400 °C under different atmospheres. The electronic structure and properties of the grey or black gel-derived powders are deeply inspected by a combination of classical and less conventional techniques, in order to identify the origin of their photoresponsivity. The defective sites of these heterostructures, namely oxygen vacancies, graphitic carbon and unpaired electrons localized on the C matrix, result in a remarkable visible light activity in spite of the lack of band gap narrowing or Ti3+-self doping. The materials provide HER values ranging from about 0.15 to 0.40 mmol h-1 gcat -1, under both UV- and visible-light irradiation, employing glycerol as sacrificial agent and without any co-catalyst.

Alkanes in Minisci-Type Reaction under Photocatalytic Conditions with Hydrogen Evolution.

Project description:We report herein a protocol for the selective activation of C(sp3)-H bonds based on the interplay of two readily available organic catalysts and their successful implementation in cross-coupling azaarenes with alkanes. This Minisci-like reaction is promoted by visible light at room temperature and is free from chemical oxidants, metals, and chlorinated solvents. A wide range of substrates are compatible, including some bioactive molecules. Mechanistic studies support a dual catalytic cycle with H2 evolution.

Viologen-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks toward Metal-Free Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution.

Project description:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have shown promise in the field of photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution. Many studies have been carried out using various electroactive and photoactive moieties such as triazine, imide, and porphyrin to produce COFs with different geometric structures and units. Electron transfer mediators like viologen and their derivatives can accelerate the transfer of electrons from photosensitizers to active sites. Herein, the combination of a biphenyl-bridged dicarbazole electroactive donor skeleton with a viologen acceptor structure is reported for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of novel COF structures with various alkyl linkers {TPCBP X-COF [X = ethyl (E), butyl (B), and hexyl (H)]}. The structures became more flexible and exhibited less crystal behavior as the length of the alkyl chain increased according to scanning and transmission electron microscopy images, X-ray diffraction analyses, and theoretical three-dimensional geometric optimization. In comparison, the H2 evolution rate of the TPCBP B-COF (12.276 mmol g-1) is 2.15 and 2.38 times higher than those of the TPCBP H-COF (5.697 mmol h-1) and TPCBP E-COF (5.165 mmol h-1), respectively, under visible light illumination for 8 h. The TPCBP B-COF structure is one of the best-performing catalysts for the corresponding photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in the literature, producing 1.029 mmol g-1 h-1 with a high apparent quantum efficiency of 79.69% at 470 nm. Our strategy provides new aspects for the design of novel COFs with respect to future metal-free hydrogen evolution by using solar energy conversion.

Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation by Vesicle-Embedded [FeFe]Hydrogenase Mimics: A Mechanistic Study.

Project description:Artificial photosynthesis-the direct photochemical generation of hydrogen from water-is a promising but scientifically challenging future technology. Because nature employs membranes for photodriven reactions, the aim of this work is to elucidate the effect of membranes on artificial photocatalysis. To do so, a combination of electrochemistry, photocatalysis, and time-resolved spectroscopy on vesicle-embedded [FeFe]hydrogenase mimics, driven by a ruthenium tris-2,2'-bipyridine photosensitizer, is reported. The membrane effects encountered can be summarized as follows: the presence of vesicles steers the reactivity of the [FeFe]-benzodithiolate catalyst towards disproportionation, instead of protonation, due to membrane characteristics, such as providing a constant local effective pH, and concentrating and organizing species inside the membrane. The maximum turnover number is limited by photodegradation of the resting state in the catalytic cycle. Understanding these fundamental productive and destructive pathways in complex photochemical systems allows progress towards the development of efficient artificial leaves.

ZnO-dotted porous ZnS cluster microspheres for high efficient, Pt-free photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Project description:The Pt-free photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) has been the focus in the photocatalysis field. Here, the ZnO-dotted porous ZnS cluster microsphere (PCMS) is designed for high efficient, Pt-free PHE. The PCMS is designed through an easy "controlling competitive reaction" strategy by selecting the thiourea as S(2-) source and Zn(Ac)₂·2H₂O as Zn source in ethylene glycol medium. Under suitable conditions, one of the PCMS, named PCMS-1, with high SBET specific area of 194 m(2)g(-1), microsphere size of 100 nm and grain size of 3 nm can be obtained. The formation of PCMS is verified by TEM, XAES, XPS, Raman and IR methods. Importantly, a series of the experiments and theoretical calculation demonstrate that the dotting of ZnO not only makes the photo-generated electrons/hole separate efficiently, but also results in the formation of the active catalytic sites for PHE. As a result, the PCMS-1 shows the promising activity up to 367 μmol h(-1) under Pt-free condition. The PHE activity has no obvious change after addition 1 wt.% Pt, implying the presence of active catalytic sites for hydrogen evolution in the PCMS-1. The easy synthesis process, low preparation cost of the PCMS makes their large potential for Pt-free PHE.
