Characterization and photocatalytic study of tantalum oxide nanoparticles prepared by the hydrolysis of tantalum oxo-ethoxide Ta8(μ3-O)2(μ-O)8(μ-OEt)6(OEt)14.

ABSTRACT: Ta8(μ3-O)2(μ-O)8(μ-OEt)6(OEt)14 (1) was obtained by the controlled hydrolysis of tantalum ethoxide Ta(OEt)5 in the presence of ammonia. Compound 1 is considered as the intermediate building block in the sol-gel polymerization of Ta(OEt)5. Further hydrolysis of compound 1 yielded nanoparticles of Ta2O5, which were characterized by various techniques such as TGA-DTA-DSC, UV-vis DRS, XRD, SEM, TEM, particle size analyzer (DLS) and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. The band gap of the particles was calculated by using the Tauc plot. The photocatalytic activity of Ta2O5 nanoparticles was tested by the degradation of the organic dye rhodamine B.

Nanostructured Hybrids Based on Tantalum Bromide Octahedral Clusters and Graphene Oxide for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution.

Project description:The generation of hydrogen (H2) using sunlight has become an essential energy alternative for decarbonization. The need for functional nanohybrid materials based on photo- and electroactive materials and accessible raw materials is high in the field of solar fuels. To reach this goal, single-step synthesis of {Ta6Bri12}@GO (GO = graphene oxide) nanohybrids was developed by immobilization of [{Ta6Bri12}Bra2(H2O)a4]·4H2O (i = inner and a = apical positions of the Ta6 octahedron) on GO nanosheets by taking the advantage of the easy ligand exchange of the apical cluster ligands with the oxygen functionalities of GO. The nanohybrids were characterized by spectroscopic, analytical, and morphological techniques. The hybrid formation enhances the yield of photocatalytic H2 from water with respect to their precursors and this is without the presence of precious metals. This enhancement is attributed to the optimal cluster loading onto the GO support and the crucial role of GO in the electron transfer from Ta6 clusters into GO sheets, thus suppressing the charge recombination. In view of the simplicity and versatility of the designed photocatalytic system, octahedral tantalum clusters are promising candidates to develop new and environmentally friendly photocatalysts for H2 evolution.

Tantalum ureate complexes for photocatalytic hydroaminoalkylation.

Project description:Using a tantalum ureate pre-catalyst, photocatalytic hydroaminoalkylation of unactivated alkenes with unprotected amines at room temperature is demonstrated. The combination of Ta(CH2SiMe3)3Cl2 and a ureate ligand with a saturated cyclic backbone resulted in this unique reactivity. Preliminary investigations of the reaction mechanism suggest that both the thermal and photocatalytic hydroaminoalkylation reactions begin with N-H bond activation and subsequent metallaaziridine formation. However, a select tantalum ureate complex, through ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT), results in photocatalyzed homolytic metal-carbon bond cleavage and subsequent addition to unactivated alkene to afford the desired carbon-carbon bond formation. Origins of ligand effects on promoting homolytic metal-carbon bond cleavage are explored computationally to support enhanced ligand design efforts.

Copper-zinc oxide heterojunction catalysts exhibiting enhanced photocatalytic activity prepared by a hybrid deposition method.

Project description:Heterojunction copper-zinc oxide catalysts were prepared by a hybrid two-step methodology comprising hydrothermal growth of ZnO nanorods (ZnO-NR) followed by deposition of Cu2O nanoparticles using an advanced gas deposition technique (AGD). The obtained bicatalysts were characterized by SEM, AFM, XRD, XPS, PL and spectrophotometry and revealed well-dispersed and crystalline Cu2O nanoparticles attached to the ZnO-NR. The adsorption properties and photocatalytic degradation of Orange II dye in water solutions were measured. It was found that the bicatalysts exhibited a conversion rate and quantum yield that both were about 50% higher compared with ZnO-NR alone, which were attributed to the intrinsic electric field created at the p-n junction formed at the Cu2O/ZnO interface facilitating charge separation of electron-hole pairs formed upon interband photon absorption. The interpretation was evidenced by efficient quenching of characteristic deep level ZnO photoluminescence bands and photoelectron core-level energy shifts. By comparisons with known energy levels in Cu2O and ZnO, the effect was found to be most pronounced for the non-polar ZnO-NR side facets, which accounted for about 95% of the exposed surface area of the catalyst and hence the majority of dye adsorption. It was also found that the dye adsorption capacity of the ZnO nanorods increased considerably after Cu2O deposition thereby facilitating the oxidation of the dye. The results imply the possibility of judiciously aligning band edges on structurally controlled and well-connected low-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures using combined two-step synthesis techniques, where in particular vacuum-based techniques such as AGD allow for growth of well-connected nanocrystals with well developed heterojunction interfaces.

Multistate Memristive Tantalum Oxide Devices for Ternary Arithmetic.

Project description:Redox-based resistive switching random access memory (ReRAM) offers excellent properties to implement future non-volatile memory arrays. Recently, the capability of two-state ReRAMs to implement Boolean logic functionality gained wide interest. Here, we report on seven-states Tantalum Oxide Devices, which enable the realization of an intrinsic modular arithmetic using a ternary number system. Modular arithmetic, a fundamental system for operating on numbers within the limit of a modulus, is known to mathematicians since the days of Euclid and finds applications in diverse areas ranging from e-commerce to musical notations. We demonstrate that multistate devices not only reduce the storage area consumption drastically, but also enable novel in-memory operations, such as computing using high-radix number systems, which could not be implemented using two-state devices. The use of high radix number system reduces the computational complexity by reducing the number of needed digits. Thus the number of calculation operations in an addition and the number of logic devices can be reduced.

Tantalum-Doped TiO2 Prepared by Atomic Layer Deposition and Its Application in Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Tantalum (Ta)-doped titanium oxide (TiO2) thin films are grown by plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD), and used as both an electron transport layer and hole blocking compact layer of perovskite solar cells. The metal precursors of tantalum ethoxide and titanium isopropoxide are simultaneously injected into the deposition chamber. The Ta content is controlled by the temperature of the metal precursors. The experimental results show that the Ta incorporation introduces oxygen vacancies defects, accompanied by the reduced crystallinity and optical band gap. The PEALD Ta-doped films show a resistivity three orders of magnitude lower than undoped TiO2, even at a low Ta content (0.8-0.95 at.%). The ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy spectra reveal that Ta incorporation leads to a down shift of valance band and conduction positions, and this is helpful for the applications involving band alignment engineering. Finally, the perovskite solar cell with Ta-doped TiO2 electron transport layer demonstrates significantly improved fill factor and conversion efficiency as compared to that with the undoped TiO2 layer.

Naturally-Derived Amphiphilic Polystyrenes Prepared by Aqueous Controlled/Living Cationic Polymerization and Copolymerization of Vinylguaiacol with R⁻OH/BF₃·OEt₂.

Project description:In this study, we investigated direct-controlled/living cationic polymerization and copolymerization of 4-vinylguaiacol (4VG), i.e., 4-hydroxy-3-methoxystyrene, which can be derived from naturally-occurring ferulic acid, to develop novel bio-based amphiphilic polystyrenes with phenol functions. The controlled/living cationic polymerization of 4VG was achieved using the R⁻OH/BF₃·OEt₂ initiating system, which is effective for the controlled/living polymerization of petroleum-derived 4-vinylphenol in the presence of a large amount of water via reversible activation of terminal C⁻OH bond catalyzed by BF₃·OEt₂, to result in the polymers with controlled molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. The random or block copolymerization of 4VG was also examined using p-methoxystyrene (pMOS) as a comonomer with an aqueous initiating system to tune the amphiphilic nature of the 4VG-derived phenolic polymers. The obtained polymer can be expected not only to be used as a novel styrenic bio-based polymer but also as a material with amphiphilic nature for some applications.

Project description:Five coordination polymers formed from combinations of copper(II) acetate and 4'-(4-alkyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3''-terpyridines with methoxy (1), n-butoxy (2), n-pentyloxy (3) and n-heptyloxy (4) substituents are reported. Reaction of 1 with Cu(OAc)2∙H2O leads to the 1D-polymer [Cu2(μ-OAc)4(1)]n in which {Cu2(-OAc)4} paddle-wheel units are connected by ligands 1, or [{Cu4(μ3-OH)2(μ-OAc)2(μ3-OAc)2(AcO-κO)2(1)2}.2MeOH]n in which centrosymmetric tetranuclear clusters link pairs of ligands 1 to give a double-stranded 1D-polymer. Layering solutions of Cu(OAc)2∙H2O (in MeOH) over 2, 3 or 4 (in CHCl3) leads to the assembly of the 1D-polymers [2{Cu2(μ-OAc)4(2)}.1.25MeOH]n, [Cu2(μ-OAc)4(3)]n and [{Cu2(μ-OAc)4(4)}.0.2CHCl3]n. In all compounds, the 3,2':6',3''-tpy unit coordinates only through the outer pyridine rings, but the conformation of the 3,2':6',3''-tpy responds to changes in the length of the alkyloxy tails leading to changes in the conformation of the polymer backbone and in the packing of the chains in the crystal lattice in the chains featuring {Cu2(-OAc)4} paddle-wheel linkers.

Trinuclear Oxo-Titanium Clusters: Synthesis, Structure, and Photocatalytic Activity.

Project description:The interest in titanium (IV) oxo-complexes is due to their potential application in photodegradation processes and environmental pollutants reduction. Titanium (IV) oxo-complexes (TOCs) of the general formula [Ti3O(OiPr)8(OOCR')2] (R' = -C13H9 (1), -p-PhCl (2), -m-PhNO2 (3), -C4H7 (4)) were synthesized and structurally characterized. The use of the different carboxylate ligands allowed modulating the optical band gaps of the produced microcrystals, which were measured via diffuse reflectance ultraviolet and visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis-DRS) and calculated using the density functional theory (DFT) method. The dispersion of TOCs (1-3) in the poly (methyl methacrylate) matrix (PMMA) led to the formation of polymer/TOCs composites, which in the next stage of our works have been applied in the photocatalytic activity estimation of synthesized trinuclear Ti(IV) oxo-complexes. Studies of the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) induced by UV irradiation exhibit that the PMMA-TOCs composite containing (1) oxo-clusters is the most active, followed by the system containing the complex (3).
