Efficient CO2 capture by tertiary amine-functionalized ionic liquids through Li(+)-stabilized zwitterionic adduct formation.

ABSTRACT: Highly efficient CO2 absorption was realized through formation of zwitterionic adducts, combining synthetic strategies to ionic liquids (ILs) and coordination. The essence of our strategy is to make use of multidentate cation coordination between Li(+) and an organic base. Also PEG-functionalized organic bases were employed to enhance the CO2-philicity. The ILs were reacted with CO2 to form the zwitterionic adduct. Coordination effects between various lithium salts and neutral ligands, as well as the CO2 capacity of the chelated ILs obtained were investigated. For example, the CO2 capacity of PEG150MeBu2N increased steadily from 0.10 to 0.66 (mol CO2 absorbed per mol of base) through the formation of zwitterionic adducts being stabilized by Li(+).

Project description:CO2 capture on solid materials possesses significant advantages on the operation cost, process for large-scale CO2 capture and storage (CCS) that stimulates great interest in exploring high-performance solid CO2 adsorbents. A ship-in-a-bottle strategy was successfully developed to prepare the [APMIM]Br@NaY host-guest system in which an amine-functionalized ionic liquid (IL), 1-aminopropyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([APMIM]Br), was in-situ encapsulated in the NaY supercages. The genuine host-guest systems were thoroughly characterized and tested in CO2 capture from simulated flue gas. It was evidenced the encapsulated ILs are more stable than the bulk ILs. These host-guest systems exhibited superb overall CO2 capture capacity up to 4.94 mmol g(-1) and the chemically adsorbed CO2 achieved 1.85 mmol g(-1) depending on the [APMIM]Br loading amount. The chemisorbed CO2 can be desorbed rapidly by flushing with N2 gas at 50 °C. The optimized [APMIM]Br@NaY system remains its original CO2 capture capacity in multiple cycling tests under prolonged harsh adsorption-desorption conditions. The excellent physicochemical properties and the CO2 capture performance of the host-guest systems offer them great promise for the future practice in the industrial CO2 capture.

Mechanistic Studies of CO2 Cycloaddition Reaction Catalyzed by Amine-Functionalized Ionic Liquids.

Project description:The homogeneous cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epichlorohydrin catalyzed by amine-functionalized ionic liquid (AFIL) to yield cyclic carbonate is reported in this study. The AFIL has the dual function of ionic liquid and organic base. The experimental study indicates that AFIL can efficiently catalyze the conversion of CO2 and epichlorohydrin to the product 3-chloro-1,2-propylene. The mechanistic study based on DFT calculations reveals that the imidazolium ring in AFIL primarily catalyzes the ring-opening reaction of epichlorohydrin, while the protonated amine group is responsible for stabilizing the Br- anion in the nucleophilic attack. This study provides a deep insight into the catalytic roles of AFIL and also inspires us to design efficient dual function catalysts for CO2 utilization.

CO2 Capture With Absorbents of Tertiary Amine Functionalized Nano-SiO2.

Project description:To improve CO2 adsorption performance of nanoparticle absorbents, a novel tertiary amine functionalized nano-SiO2 (NS-NR2) was synthesized based on the 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (KH540) modified nano-SiO2 (NS-NH2) via methylation. The chemical structure and performances of the NS-NR2 were characterized through a series of experiments, which revealed that NS-NR2 can react with CO2 in water and nanofluid with low viscosity revealed better CO2 capture. The CO2 capture mechanism of NS-NR2 was studied by kinetic models. From the correlation coefficient, the pseudo second order model was found to fit well with the experiment data. The influencing factors were investigated, including temperature, dispersants, and cycling numbers. Results has shown the additional surfactant to greatly promote the CO2 adsorption performance of NS-NR2 because of the better dispersity of nanoparticles. This work proved that NS-NR2 yields low viscosity, high capacity for CO2 capture, and good regenerability in water. NS-NR2 with high CO2 capture will play a role in storing CO2 to enhanced oil recovery in CO2 flooding.

Functionalized Ionic Liquids for CO<sub>2</sub> Capture under Ambient Pressure.

Project description:Ionic liquids (ILs) have been widely explored as alternative solvents for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and utilization. However, most of these processes are under pressures significantly higher than atmospheric level, which not only levies additional equipment and operation costs, but also makes the large-scale CO2 capture and conversion less practical. In this study, we rationally designed glycol ether-functionalized imidazolium, phosphonium and ammonium ILs containing acetate (OAc-) or Tf2N- anions, and found these task-specific ILs could solubilize up to 0.55 mol CO2 per mole of IL (or 5.9 wt% CO2) at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. Although acetate anions enabled a better capture of CO2, Tf2N- anions are more compatible with alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), which is a key enzyme involved in the cascade enzymatic conversion of CO2 to methanol. Our promising results indicate the possibility of CO2 capture under ambient pressure and its enzymatic conversion to valuable commodity.

Study on the Printability through Digital Light Processing Technique of Ionic Liquids for CO2 Capture.

Project description:Here we present new 3D printable materials based on the introduction of different commercially available ionic liquids (ILs) in the starting formulations. We evaluate the influence of these additives on the printability of such formulations through light-induced 3D printing (digital light processing-DLP), investigating as well the effect of ionic liquids with polymerizable groups. The physical chemical properties of such materials are compared, focusing on the permeability towards CO2 of the different ILs present in the formulations. At last, we show the possibility of 3D printing high complexity structures, which could be the base of new high complexity filters for a more efficient CO2 capture.

Tailoring Amine-Functionalized Ti-MOFs via a Mixed Ligands Strategy for High-Efficiency CO2 Capture.

Project description:Amine-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a promising strategy for the high-efficiency capture and separation of CO2. In this work, by tuning the ratio of 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) to 5-aminoisophthalic acid (5-NH2-H2IPA), we designed and synthesized a series of amine-functionalized highly stable Ti-based MOFs (named MIP-207-NH2-n, in which n represents 15%, 25%, 50%, 60%, and 100%). The structural analysis shows that the original framework of MIP-207 in the MIP-207-NH2-n (n = 15%, 25%, and 50%) MOFs remains intact when the mole ratio of ligand H3BTC to 5-NH2-H2IPA is less than 1 to 1 in the resulting MOFs. By the introduction of amino groups, MIP-207-NH2-25% demonstrates outstanding CO2 capture performance up to 3.96 and 2.91 mmol g-1, 20.7% and 43.3% higher than those of unmodified MIP-207 at 0 and 25 °C, respectively. Furthermore, the breakthrough experiment indicates that the dynamic CO2 adsorption capacity and CO2/N2 separation factors of MIP-207-NH2-25% are increased by about 25% and 15%, respectively. This work provides an additional strategy to construct amine-functionalized MOFs with the maintenance of the original MOF structure and high performance of CO2 capture and separation.

Ruthenium Nanoparticles Stabilized with Methoxy-Functionalized Ionic Liquids: Synthesis and Structure-Performance Relations in Styrene Hydrogenation.

Project description:A series of ruthenium nanoparticles (RuNPs) were synthesized by the organometallic approach in different functionalized imidazolium ionic liquids (FILs). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed well-dispersed and narrow-sized RuNPs ranging from 1.3 to 2.2 nm, depending on the IL functionalization. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) allowed the interaction between the RuNPs and the ILs to be studied. The RuNPs stabilized by methoxy-based FILs (MEM and MME) displayed a good balance between catalytic activity and stability when evaluated in the hydrogenation of styrene (S) under mild reaction conditions. Moreover, the catalysts showed total selectivity towards ethylbenzene (EB) under milder reaction conditions (5 bar, 30 °C) than reported in the literature for other RuNP catalysts.

Experimental Investigation on Thermophysical Properties of Ammonium-Based Protic Ionic Liquids and Their Potential Ability towards CO2 Capture.

Project description:Ionic liquids, which are extensively known as low-melting-point salts, have received significant attention as the promising solvent for CO2 capture. This work presents the synthesis, thermophysical properties and the CO2 absorption of a series of ammonium cations coupled with carboxylate anions producing ammonium-based protic ionic liquids (PILs), namely 2-ethylhexylammonium pentanoate ([EHA][C5]), 2-ethylhexylammonium hexanoate ([EHA][C6]), 2-ethylhexylammonium heptanoate ([EHA][C7]), bis-(2-ethylhexyl)ammonium pentanoate ([BEHA][C5]), bis-(2-ethylhexyl)ammonium hexanoate ([BEHA][C6]) and bis-(2-ethylhexyl)ammonium heptanoate ([BEHA][C7]). The chemical structures of the PILs were confirmed by using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy while the density (ρ) and the dynamic viscosity (η) of the PILs were determined and analyzed in a range from 293.15K up to 363.15K. The refractive index (nD) was also measured at T = (293.15 to 333.15) K. Thermal analyses conducted via a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) indicated that all PILs have the thermal decomposition temperature, Td of greater than 416K and the presence of glass transition, Tg was detected in each PIL. The CO2 absorption of the PILs was studied up to 29 bar at 298.15 K and the experimental results showed that [BEHA][C7] had the highest CO2 absorption with 0.78 mol at 29 bar. The CO2 absorption values increase in the order of [C5] < [C6] < [C7] anion regardless of the nature of the cation.

Fluorine-functionalized ionic liquids with high oxygen solubility.

Project description:Eight fluorine-functionalized ionic liquids were synthesized and the oxygen solubility was compared to commercial ionic liquids without the extra fluorinated chain. The concentration of dissolved oxygen increased with the fluorine content of the alkyl chain, which can be attached either to the cation or the anion. This approach maintains the freedom to design an ionic liquid for a specific application, while at the same time the oxygen solubility is increased.

The CO2 Absorption in Flue Gas Using Mixed Ionic Liquids.

Project description:Because of the appealing properties, ionic liquids (ILs) are believed to be promising alternatives for the CO2 absorption in the flue gas. Several ILs, such as [NH2emim][BF4], [C4mim][OAc], and [NH2emim[OAc], have been used to capture CO2 of the simulated flue gas in this work. The structural changes of the ILs before and after absorption were also investigated by quantum chemical methods, FTIR, and NMR technologies. However, the experimental results and theoretical calculation showed that the flue gas component SO2 would significantly weaken the CO2 absorption performance of the ILs. SO2 was more likely to react with the active sites of the ILs than CO2. To improve the absorption capacity, the ionic liquid (IL) mixture [C4mim][OAc]/ [NH2emim][BF4] were employed for the CO2 absorption of the flue gas. It is found that the CO2 absorption capacity would be increased by about 25%, even in the presence of SO2. The calculation results suggested that CO2 could not compete with SO2 for reacting with the IL during the absorption process. Nevertheless, SO2 might be first captured by the [NH2emim][BF4] of the IL mixture, and then the [C4mim][OAc] ionic liquid could absorb more CO2 without the interference of SO2.
