Efficient and durable hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst based on nonmetallic nitrogen doped hexagonal carbon.

ABSTRACT: The feasibility of renewable energy technology, hydrogen production by water electrolysis, depends on the design of efficient and durable electrocatalyst composed of earth-abundant elements. Herein, a highly active and stable nonmetallic electrocatalyst, nitrogen doped hexagonal carbon (NHC), was developed for hydrogen production. It exhibited high activity for hydrogen evolution with a low overpotential of only 65 mV, an apparent exchange current density of 5.7 × 10(-2) mA cm(-2) and a high hydrogen production rate of 20.8 mL cm(-2) h(-1) at -0.35 V. The superior hydrogen evolution activity of NHC stemmed from the intrinsic electrocatalytic property of hexagonal nanodiamond, the rapid charge transfer and abundance of electrocatalytic sites after nitrogen doping. Moreover, NHC was stable in a corrosive acidic solution during electrolysis under high current density.

Nitrogen-Doped Oxygenated Molybdenum Phosphide as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution in Alkaline Media.

Project description:Phosphides of transition metals (TMPs) are a developing class of materials for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) as an alternative to expensive noble metals to produce clean energy. Herein, the nitrogen-doped molybdenum oxide (MoOx) is developed via a facile and simple hydrothermal method, followed by annealing in the N2 atmosphere and phosphorization to form a nitrogen-doped oxygenated molybdenum phosphide (N-MoP) sphere-shaped structure. The developed N-doped phosphide structure depicts enhanced HER activity by reaching a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a very low overpotential of only 87 mV, which is much better than annealed nitrogen-doped molybdenum oxide (A-MoOx) 138 mV in alkaline medium. N-MoP is a highly efficient electrocatalyst for HER attributed to a more exposed surface, large electrode/electrolyte interface and appropriate binding energies for reactants. This study extends the opportunity of developing nitrogen-doped TMPs, which can display exceptional properties as compared to their oxides.

Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon Derived from Biomass Used as Trifunctional Electrocatalyst toward Oxygen Reduction, Oxygen Evolution and Hydrogen Evolution Reactions.

Project description:Tremendous developments in energy storage and conversion technologies urges researchers to develop inexpensive, greatly efficient, durable and metal-free electrocatalysts for tri-functional electrochemical reactions, namely oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs), oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) and hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs). In these regards, this present study focuses upon the synthesis of porous carbon (PC) or N-doped porous carbon (N-PC) acquired from golden shower pods biomass (GSB) via solvent-free synthesis. Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies confirmed the doping of nitrogen in N-PC. In addition, morphological analysis via field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) provide evidence of the sheet-like porous structure of N-PC. ORR results from N-PC show the four-electron pathway (average n = 3.6) for ORRs with a Tafel slope of 86 mV dec-1 and a half-wave potential of 0.76 V. For OERs and HERs, N-PC@Ni shows better overpotential values of 314 and 179 mV at 10 mA cm-2, and its corresponding Tafel slopes are 132 and 98 mV dec-1, respectively. The chronopotentiometry curve of N-PC@Ni reveals better stability toward OER and HER at 50 mA cm-2 for 8 h. These consequences provide new pathways to fabricate efficient electrocatalysts of metal-free heteroatom-doped porous carbon from bio-waste/biomass for energy application in water splitting and metal air batteries.

In situ synthesis of molybdenum carbide/N-doped carbon hybrids as an efficient hydrogen-evolution electrocatalyst.

Project description:The development of non-precious metal based electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has received more and more attention over recent years owing to energy and environmental issues, and Mo based materials have been explored as a promising candidate. In this work, molybdenum carbide/N-doped carbon hybrids (Mo2C@NC) were synthesized facilely via one-step high-temperature pyrolysis by adjusting the mass ratio of urea and ammonium molybdate. The Mo2C@NC consisted of ultrasmall nanoparticles encapsulated by N-doped carbon, which had high specific surface area. They all exhibited efficient HER activity, and the Mo2C@NC with a mass ratio of 160 (Mo2C@NC-160) showed the best HER activity, with a low overpotential of 90 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 50 mV dec-1, which was one of the most active reported Mo2C-based electrocatalysts. The excellent HER activity of Mo2C@NC-160 was attributed to the following features: (1) the highly dispersed ultrasmall Mo2C nanoparticles, which exhibited high electrochemically active surface areas; (2) the synergistic effect of the N-doped carbon shell/matrix, which facilitated the electron transport.

Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon Nanosheets Strongly Coupled with Mo2C Nanoparticles for Efficient Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution.

Project description:Exploring earth-abundant and noble metal-free catalysts for water electrolysis is pivotal in renewable hydrogen production. Herein, a highly active electrocatalyst of nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanosheets coupled with Mo2C nanoparticles (Mo2C/NPC) was synthesized by a novel method with high BET surface area of 1380 m2 g-1 using KOH to activate carbon composite materials. The KOH plays a key role in etching out MoS2 to produce Mo precursor; simultaneously, it corrodes carbon to form porous structure and produce reducing gas such as H2 and CO. The resulting Mo2C/NPC hybrid demonstrated superior HER activity in acid solution, with the overpotential of 166 mV at current density of 10 mA cm-2, onset overpotential of 93 mV, Tafel slope of 68 mV dec-1, and remarkable long-term cycling stability. The present strategy may provide a promising strategy to fabricate other metal carbide/carbon hybrids for energy conversion and storage.

Ni3S2 in Situ Grown on Ni Foam Coupled with Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanotubes as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Solution.

Project description:Searching for a highly efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline solution is still challenging. In this work, we report a HER electrocatalyst composed of Ni foam, Ni3S2, and nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NF@Ni3S2@NCNTs). The good lattice matching between Ni and Ni3S2, interstitial doping of C and N atoms, and synergistic effect of NCNTs make NF@Ni3S2@NCNTs highly efficient HER electrocatalysts in alkaline solution. NF@Ni3S2@NCNTs exhibit an overpotential of 93.89 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, a Tafel slope of 54 mV dec-1, and superior stability for HER in 1 M KOH solution. Our findings will promote the reasonable design and synthesis of an efficient electrocatalyst for HER in alkaline electrolytes.

Rationally Designed Hierarchically Structured Tungsten Nitride and Nitrogen-Rich Graphene-Like Carbon Nanocomposite as Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalyst.

Project description:Practical application of hydrogen production from water splitting relies strongly on the development of low-cost and high-performance electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The previous researches mainly focused on transition metal nitrides as HER catalysts due to their electrical conductivity and corrosion stability under acidic electrolyte, while tungsten nitrides have reported poorer activity for HER. Here the activity of tungsten nitride is optimized through rational design of a tungsten nitride-carbon composite. More specifically, tungsten nitride (WN x ) coupled with nitrogen-rich porous graphene-like carbon is prepared through a low-cost ion-exchange/molten-salt strategy. Benefiting from the nanostructured WN x , the highly porous structure and rich nitrogen dopant (9.5 at%) of the carbon phase with high percentage of pyridinic-N (54.3%), and more importantly, their synergistic effect, the composite catalyst displays remarkably high catalytic activity while maintaining good stability. This work highlights a powerful way to design more efficient metal-carbon composites catalysts for HER.

Ru and Se Co-Doped Cobalt Hydroxide Electrocatalyst for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reactions.

Project description:The development of efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions is an extremely important area for the development of green and clean energy. In this work, a precursor material was successfully prepared via electrodeposition of two doping elements to construct a co-doped cobalt hydroxide electrocatalyst (Ru-Co(OH)2-Se). This approach was demonstrated to be an effective way to improve the performance of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The experimental results show that the material exhibited a smaller impedance value and a larger electrochemically active surface area. In the HER process, the overpotential was only 109 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2. In addition, the doping of selenium and ruthenium effectively prevented the corrosion of the catalysts, with the (Ru-Co(OH)2-Se) material showing no significant reduction in the catalytic performance after 50 h. This synergistic approach through elemental co-doping demonstrated good results in the HER process.

PtNi Alloy Coated in Porous Nitrogen-Doped Carbon as Highly Efficient Catalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reactions.

Project description:The development of low platinum loading hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts with high activity and stability is of great significance to the practical application of hydrogen energy. This paper reports a simple method to synthesize a highly efficient HER catalyst through coating a highly dispersed PtNi alloy on porous nitrogen-doped carbon (MNC) derived from the zeolite imidazolate skeleton. The catalyst is characterized and analyzed by physical characterization methods, such as XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, XPS, and LSV, EIS, it, v-t, etc. The optimized sample exhibits an overpotential of only 26 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, outperforming commercial 20 wt% Pt/C (33 mV). The synthesized catalyst shows a relatively fast HER kinetics as evidenced by the small Tafel slope of 21.5 mV dec-1 due to the small charge transfer resistance, the alloying effect between Pt and Ni, and the interaction between PtNi alloy and carrier.

Quasi-Amorphous Metallic Nickel Nanopowder as an Efficient and Durable Electrocatalyst for Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution.

Project description:Nickel is regarded as the best alternative metal electrocatalyst to platinum for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Success in developing a quasi-amorphous metallic nickel (QAMN) nanopowder catalyst using a two-step chemical route for efficient and durable HER in alkaline solution is reported. It is found that the QAMN electrocatalyst exhibits essentially zero overpotential at the cathodic onset while delivering 10 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of only 240 mV; both performances are far better than what was reported previously using prior metallic nickel catalysts. Taking into account increased surface area, further enhanced activity is attributed to the superior intrinsic activity. Meanwhile, the QAMN catalyst shows excellent stability in accelerated and interrupted polarization in alkaline solution for tens of hours. This study provides a new chemical means to prepare amorphous metallic materials for more efficient catalysis.

Nitrogen-doped RuS2 nanoparticles containing in situ reduced Ru as an efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution.

Project description:The production of hydrogen via water electrolysis brings hope for the realization of hydrogen economy, but there is still a lack of highly efficient and appropriate electrocatalysts for the generation of hydrogen in practical applications. In particular, reasonable construction and feasible preparation strategies are the essential requirements for excellent electrocatalysts. Herein, the heterostructures of N-RuS2/Ru nanoparticles were designed by annealing the RuS2 nanoparticles in ammonia. By introducing a nitrogen dopant and single-phase Ru metal simultaneously, high-efficiency electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was implemented, where the electrocatalyst of N-RuS2/Ru exhibited a low onset overpotential of 76 mV and small overpotential of 120 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in an acidic electrolyte. Besides, it displayed a low Tafel slope of 53 mV dec-1, a small interface charge transfer resistance, and long-time stability and durability, suggesting its remarkable properties as a promising HER electrocatalyst candidate.
