Long-term relationships among pesticide applications, mobility, and soil erosion in a vineyard watershed.

ABSTRACT: Agricultural pesticide use has increased worldwide during the last several decades, but the long-term fate, storage, and transfer dynamics of pesticides in a changing environment are poorly understood. Many pesticides have been progressively banned, but in numerous cases, these molecules are stable and may persist in soils, sediments, and ice. Many studies have addressed the question of their possible remobilization as a result of global change. In this article, we present a retro-observation approach based on lake sediment records to monitor micropollutants and to evaluate the long-term succession and diffuse transfer of herbicides, fungicides, and insecticide treatments in a vineyard catchment in France. The sediment allows for a reliable reconstruction of past pesticide use through time, validated by the historical introduction, use, and banning of these organic and inorganic pesticides in local vineyards. Our results also revealed how changes in these practices affect storage conditions and, consequently, the pesticides' transfer dynamics. For example, the use of postemergence herbicides (glyphosate), which induce an increase in soil erosion, led to a release of a banned remnant pesticide (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, DDT), which had been previously stored in vineyard soil, back into the environment. Management strategies of ecotoxicological risk would be well served by recognition of the diversity of compounds stored in various environmental sinks, such as agriculture soil, and their capability to become sources when environmental conditions change.

Project description:Soil erosion is a critical global challenge that degrades land and water resources, leading to reduced soil fertility, pollution of water bodies, and sedimentation in hydraulic structures and reservoirs. In Ethiopia, where agriculture forms the backbone of the economy, unplanned LULC changes have intensified soil erosion, posing a significant threat to food security and sustainable development. In the Holota watershed of Ethiopia, rapid population growth and urbanization have accelerated unplanned land use and land cover (LULC) changes, significantly affecting soil erosion patterns. This study aims to assess the spatiotemporal changes in LULC and their impact on soil erosion from 2000 to 2050. Using Landsat imagery from 2000, 2010, and 2020, supervised classification with the maximum likelihood algorithm was applied in Google Earth Engine (GEE) to map five LULC classes: forest, cropland, built-up areas, shrubland, and grassland. The future LULC for 2050 was predicted using the CA-Markov chain model. Soil erosion for 2020 and 2050 LULC maps was estimated using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE). Results indicate that annual soil loss in the watershed was 13.3 t ha - 1 yr - 1 in 2020, increasing to 15.9 t ha - 1 yr - 1 by 2050. Cropland, built-up areas, and grassland are expected to be the major contributors to future soil erosion, while forest and shrubland are likely to play a mitigating role. The novelty of this research lies in its integration of cutting-edge remote sensing technologies, such as GEE and the CA-Markov model, to predict the combined impact of LULC changes on soil erosion in a data-scarce region, providing actionable insights for conservation planning in Ethiopian highlands. These findings offer essential guidance for conservation planners to implement sustainable land management practices aimed at reducing soil erosion, including promoting forest restoration, adopting contour farming, and enforcing land use regulations to limit the expansion of cropland and built-up areas in erosion-prone zones.

Project description:Phosphate fertilization contributes to an input of uranium (U) in agricultural soils. Although its accumulation and fate in agricultural soils have been previously studied, its colloidal transport and accumulation along slopes through erosion have been studied to a lesser extent in viticulture soils. To bridge this gap, the contents and potential mobility of U were investigated in vineyard model soils in the Rhineland-Palatinate region, Germany. In addition to elevated U contents, U was expected to associate with colloids and subject to erosion, thus accumulating on slope foots and in soils with fine structure, and reflecting a greater variability. Moreover, another expectation was the favorable erosion/mobility of U in areas with greater carbonate content. This was tested in three regional locations, at different slope positions and through soil horizon depths, with a total of 57 soil samples. The results show that U concentrations (0.48-1.26 ppm) were slightly higher than proximal non-agricultural soils (0.50 ppm), quite homogenous along slope positions, and slightly higher in topsoils. Assuming a homogeneous fertilization, the vertical translocation of U in soil was most probably higher than along the slope by erosion. In addition, carbonate content and soil texture correlated with U concentrations, whereas other parameters such as organic carbon and iron contents did not. The central role of carbonate and soil texture for the prediction of U content was confirmed using decision trees and elastic net, although their limited prediction power suggests that a larger sample size with a larger range of U content is required to improve the accuracy. Overall, we did not observe neither U nor colloids accumulating on slope foots, thus suggesting that soils are aggregate-stable. Lastly, we suggested considering further soil parameters (e.g., Ca2+, phosphorus, alkali metals) in future works to improve our modelling approach. Overall, our results suggest U is fortunately immobile in the studied locations.

Project description:The intensification of agricultural production has significantly reduced land availability, necessitating continuous cropping cycles that degrade soil quality and inhibit crop growth. While the short-term use of soil amendments has shown significant potential for mitigating these challenges, few studies have explored their long-term effects on acidified soils and heavy metal accumulation. Between 2013 and 2018, a field experiment was conducted in the peanut (Arachis hypogaea L)-growing region of Jinxian County, Jiangxi Province, to investigate the long-term effects of oyster shell powder applied to upland red soil. Before the experiment, the soil properties were as follows: pH, 4.54, total soil cadmium (Cd) content, 0.49 mg kg-¹; and available Cd content, 0.25 mg kg-¹. The experiment included three treatments combining chemical fertilizers with oyster shell powder at application rates of 750, 1500, and 2250 kg ha-¹ (L750, L1500, L2250) and a control with only chemical fertilizer (L0). From 2013 to 2018, peanut yield among all treatments was assessed at maturity. Soil pH was then measured using a pH meter with a 2.5:1 water-to-soil ratio. Exchangeable hydrogen and aluminum were determined using the potassium chloride exchange-neutralization titration method. Meanwhile, available Cd content was extracted using 0.1 M CaCl2 and measured with a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer. While all treatments showed an annual decline in peanut yield from 2013 to 2018, but oyster shell applications significantly reduced the rate of crop yield decline. Compared to L0, the yields of L750, L1500, and L2250 treatments increased by 5.55%-19.42%, 8.64%-28.74%, and 15.43%-37.01%, respectively. Soil pH values in the L750, L1500, and L2250 treatments were higher than the L0 treatment by 0.03-0.31, 0.16-0.48, and 0.28-0.65 units, respectively. Their exchangeable hydrogen contents decreased by 10.17%-24.24%, 16.67%-27.94%, and 23.40%-29.44%. In addition, exchangeable aluminum contents decreased by 5.05%-26.09%, 23.23%-46.27%, and 39.73%-66.97%. In contrast, soil available Cd contents in the L750, L1500, and L2250 treatments were lower than the L0 treatment by 7.96%-19.29%, 9.56%-30.71%, and 13.94%-34.65%, respectively. Correlation analysis revealed that soil pH was positively associated with peanut yield and negatively correlated with exchangeable hydrogen, exchangeable aluminum, and available Cd. For every 0.1 unit increase in soil pH, peanut yields increased by 119.62-389.82 kg ha-¹, while available Cd decreased by 0.06-0.12 mg kg-¹. Therefore, these findings demonstrate the efficacy of continuous oyster shell powder application in controlling soil acidification and reducing Cd levels in upland red soil.
