Graphene-supported hemin as a highly active biomimetic oxidation catalyst.

ABSTRACT: Well supported: stable hemin-graphene conjugates formed by immobilization of monomeric hemin on graphene, showed excellent catalytic activity, more than 10 times better than that of the recently developed hemin-hydrogel system and 100 times better than that of unsupported hemin. The catalysts also showed excellent binding affinities and catalytic efficiencies approaching that of natural enzymes.

Nanofiber-Supported Palladium Nanocubes-Toward Highly Active and Reusable Catalyst.

Project description:Electrospun nanofibers were used to support palladium nanocubes, resulting in a highly active, stable, and reusable catalyst. The system proposed herein offers significant advantages compared to catalysts in the form of nanoparticles suspension. The porous, solvent permeable structure of the nanofiber mat ensures uniform and stable time distribution of palladium nanoparticles; preventing coalescence and allowing multiple use of the catalyst. The proposed cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) nanofiber mat loaded with Pd nanocubes during the nanofiber preparation step is a macroscopic structure of intrinsically nanostructural character of the catalyst that can be easily transferred between different solutions without compromising its effectiveness in consecutive cycles. Thus, obtained system was characterized with high catalytic activity as tested on a model example of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reduction by NaBH4 to 4-aminophenol (4-AP). It is shown that loading nanofibers with Pd nanocubes during electrospinning resulted in a significantly more stable system compared to surface modification of obtained nanofibers with nanocube suspension.

One-Step Synthesis of 3D Graphene Aerogel Supported Pt Nanoparticles as Highly Active Electrocatalysts for Methanol Oxidation Reaction.

Project description:Nowadays, two of the biggest obstacles restricting the further development of methanol fuel cells are excessive cost and insufficient catalytic activity of platinum-based catalysts. Herein, platinum nanoparticle supported graphene aerogel (Pt/3DGA) was successfully synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal self-assembly method. The loose three-dimensional structure of the aerogel is stabilized by a simple one-step method, which not only reduces cost compared to the freeze-drying technology, but also optimizes the loading method of nanoparticles. The prepared Pt/3DGA catalyst has a three-dimensional porous structure with a highly cross-linked, large specific surface area, even dispersion of Pt NPs and good electrical conductivity. It is worth noting that its catalytic activity is 438.4 mA/mg with long-term stability, which is consistent with the projected benefits of anodic catalytic systems in methanol fuel cells.. Our study provides an applicable method for synthesizing nano metal particles/graphene-based composites.

Graphene-hemin hybrid material as effective catalyst for selective oxidation of primary C-H bond in toluene

Project description:An effective hemin catalyst on graphene support for selective oxidation of primary C-H bond in toluene is reported with an over 50% conversion rate achieved at mild conditions. Significantly this hybrid material shows catalytic efficiency in toluene oxidation with selectivity towards benzoic acid. The role of graphene support is discussed here as providing large contact area between the catalyst and the substrate, maintaining hemin in catalytically active monomer form, attracting electron to promote site isolation, as well as protecting hemin from oxidative degradation during the reaction. Moreover, graphene is suggested to largely alter the final product selectivity, due to the different ?-? interaction strength between the graphene support and the substrate/oxidized products. With longer reaction time, overall conversion rate tends to maintain relatively unchanged while toluene undergoes a series of oxidation to convert mostly to benzoic acid.

One-pot synthesis of graphene-supported monodisperse Pd nanoparticles as catalyst for formic acid electro-oxidation.

Project description:To synthesize monodisperse palladium nanoparticles dispersed on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets, we have developed an easy and scalable solvothermal reduction method from an organic solution system. The RGO-supported palladium nanoparticles with a diameter of 3.8 nm are synthesized in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and in the presence of oleylamine and trioctylphosphine, which facilitates simultaneous reduction of graphene oxide and formation of Pd nanocrystals. So-produced Pd/RGO was tested for potential use as electrocatalyst for the electro-oxidation of formic acid. Pd/RGO catalyzes formic acid oxidation very well compared to Pd/Vulcan XC-72 catalyst. This synthesis method is a new way to prepare excellent electrocatalysts, which is of great significance in energy-related catalysis.

Hierarchical palladium catalyst for highly active and stable water oxidation in acidic media

Project description:ABSTRACT Acidic water electrolysis is of great importance for boosting the development of renewable energy. However, it severely suffers from the trade-off between high activity and long lifespan for oxygen evolution catalysts on the anode side. This is because the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction necessitates the application of a high overpotential to achieve considerable current, which inevitably drives the catalysts far away from their thermodynamic equilibrium states. Here we demonstrate a new oxygen evolution model catalyst-hierarchical palladium (Pd) whose performance even surpasses the benchmark Ir- and Ru-based materials. The Pd catalyst displays an ultralow overpotential (196 mV), excellent durability and mitigated degradation (66 μV h−1) at 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M HClO4. Tensile strain on Pd (111) facets weakens the binding of oxygen species on electrochemical etching-derived hierarchical Pd and thereby leads to two orders of magnitudes of enhancement of mass activity in comparison to the parent Pd bulk materials. Furthermore, the Pd catalyst displays the bifunctional catalytic properties for both oxygen and hydrogen evolutions and can deliver a current density of 2 A cm–2 at a low cell voltage of 1.771 V when fabricated into polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyser. Hierarchical Palladium is a new model catalyst with both high activity and stability for acidic water oxidation, which can be an ideal alternative to iridium- and rutheniumbased materials.

Regeneration and Degradation in a Biomimetic Polyoxometalate Water Oxidation Catalyst.

Project description:Complete understanding of catalytic cycles is required to advance the design of water oxidation catalysts, but it is difficult to attain, due to the complex factors governing their reactivity and stability. In this study, we investigate the regeneration and degradation pathways of the highly active biomimetic water oxidation catalyst [Mn3+ 2Mn4+ 2V4O17(OAc)3]3-, thereby completing its catalytic cycle. Beginning with the deactivated species [Mn3+ 4V4O17(OAc)2]4- left over after O2 evolution, we scrutinize a network of reaction intermediates belonging to two alternative water oxidation cycles. We find that catalyst regeneration to the activated species [Mn4+ 4V4O17(OAc)2(OH)(H2O)]- proceeds via oxidation of each Mn center, with one water ligand being bound during the first oxidation step and a second water ligand being bound and deprotonated during the final oxidation step. ΔΔG values for this last oxidation are consistent with previous experimental results, while regeneration within an alternative catalytic cycle was found to be thermodynamically unfavorable. Extensive in silico sampling of catalyst structures also revealed two degradation processes: cubane opening and ligand dissociation, both of which have low barriers at highly reduced states of the catalyst due to the presence of Jahn-Teller effects. These mechanistic insights are expected to spur the development of more efficient and stable Mn cubane water oxidation catalysts.

Free-Standing, Interwoven Tubular Graphene Mesh-Supported Binary AuPt Nanocatalysts: An Innovative and High-Performance Anode Methanol Oxidation Catalyst.

Project description:Pt-based alloy or bimetallic anode catalysts have been developed to reduce the carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning effect and the usage of Pt in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), where the second metal plays a role as CO poisoning inhibitor on Pt. Furthermore, better performance in DMFCs can be achieved by improving the catalytic dispersion and using high-performance supporting materials. In this work, we introduced a free-standing, macroscopic, interwoven tubular graphene (TG) mesh as a supporting material because of its high surface area, favorable chemical inertness, and excellent conductivity. Particularly, binary AuPt nanoparticles (NPs) can be easily immobilized on both outer and inner walls of the TG mesh with a highly dispersive distribution by a simple and efficient chemical reduction method. The TG mesh, whose outer and inner walls were decorated with optimized loading of binary AuPt NPs, exhibited a remarkably catalytic performance in DMFCs. Its methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) activity was 10.09 and 2.20 times higher than those of the TG electrodes with only outer wall immobilized with pure Pt NPs and binary AuPt NPs, respectively. Furthermore, the catalyst also displayed a great stability in methanol oxidation after 200 scanning cycles, implying the excellent tolerance toward the CO poisoning effect.

Complex Three-Dimensional Co₃O₄ Nano-Raspberry: Highly Stable and Active Low-temperature CO Oxidation Catalyst.

Project description:Highly stable and active low-temperature CO oxidation catalysts without noble metals are desirable to achieve a sustainable society. While zero-dimensional to three-dimensional Co₃O₄ nanoparticles show high catalytic activity, simple-structured nanocrystals easily self-aggregate and become sintered during catalytic reaction. Thus, complex three-dimensional nanostructures with high stability are of considerable interest. However, the controlled synthesis of complex nanoscale shapes remains a great challenge as no synthesis theory has been established. In this study, 100 nm raspberry-shaped nanoparticles composed of 7⁻8 nm Co₃O₄ nanoparticles were synthesized by hydrothermally treating cobalt glycolate solution with sodium sulfate. Surface single nanometer-scale structures with large surface areas of 89 m²·g-1 and abundant oxygen vacancies were produced. The sulfate ions functioned as bridging ligands to promote self-assembly and suppress particle growth. The Co₃O₄ nano-raspberry was highly stable under catalytic tests at 350 °C and achieved nearly 100% CO conversion at room temperature. The addition of bridging ligands is an effective method to control the formation of complex but ordered three-dimensional nanostructures that possessed extreme thermal and chemical stability and exhibited high performance.

Highly Efficient Polydopamine-coated Poly(methyl methacrylate) Nanofiber Supported Platinum⁻nickel Bimetallic Catalyst for Formaldehyde Oxidation at Room Temperature.

Project description:We fabricated one fibrous-membrane type of flexible and lightweight supported catalyst via loading platinum-nickel nanoparticles (PtNi NPs) directly on the polydopamine-coated polymethylmethacrylate electrospun-fibers (PMMA@PDA). The polymer support with the PDA layer provided numerous active sites, leading to well-monodispersed and sized PtNi NPs on the nanofibers. Through the rational design of PtNi NPs, the resultant catalyst system exhibited 90% conversion for decomposing HCHO (10 ppm) at room temperature with only a low dosage (0.02 g), retaining the high activity for 100 hours. This superior catalytic performance stems from the formate oxidation, which was the key intermediate during HCHO decomposition, and was promoted by the existence of a sufficient Pt-OH-Ni interface in the PtNi NPs with an appropriate Pt/Ni ratio of 1:5. Such tailored Pt-based nanoparticles ideally work together with the polymer nanofibers as a support for catalytic reaction. Compared with classical catalysts, our system can handle a comparable efficiency with much lower air resistance and remarkably lower dosage. Furthermore, the membrane-like morphology provides easy handling and minimizes the leaching of catalyst nanoparticles.

CeO2 nanocubes-graphene oxide as durable and highly active catalyst support for proton exchange membrane fuel cell.

Project description:Rapid degradation of cell performance still remains a significant challenge for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). In this work, we develop novel CeO2 nanocubes-graphene oxide nanocomposites as durable and highly active catalyst support for proton exchange membrane fuel cell. We show that the use of CeO2 as the radical scavenger in the catalysts remarkably improves the durability of the catalyst. The catalytic activity retention of Pt-graphene oxide-8 wt.% CeO2 nanocomposites reaches as high as 69% after 5000 CV-cycles at a high voltage range of 0.8-1.23 V, in contrast to 19% for that of the Pt-graphene oxide composites. The excellent durability of the Pt-CeO2 nanocubes-graphene oxide catalyst is attributed to the free radical scavenging activity of CeO2, which significantly slows down the chemical degradation of Nafion binder in catalytic layers, and then alleviates the decay of Pt catalysts, resulting in the excellent cycle life of Pt-CeO2-graphene oxide nanocomposite catalysts. Additionally, the performance of single cell assembled with Nafion 211 membrane and Pt-CeO2-graphene oxide catalysts with different CeO2 contents in the cathode as well as the Pt-C catalysts in the anode are also recorded and discussed in this study.
