Syntheses of two vanadium oxide-fluoride materials that differ in phase matchability.

ABSTRACT: The syntheses of two noncentrosymmetric (NCS) vanadium oxide-fluoride compounds that originate from the same synthetic reagent concentrations are presented. Hydrothermal and low-temperature syntheses allow the isolation of metastable products that may form new phases (or decompose) upon heating and allow creation of chemically similar but structurally different materials. NCS materials synthesis has been a long-standing goal in inorganic chemistry: in this article, we compare two chemically similar NCS inorganic materials, NaVOF(4)(H(2)O) (I) and NaVO(2-x)F(2+x) (II; x = 1/3). These materials originate from the same, identical reagent mixtures but are synthesized at different temperatures: 100 °C and 150 °C, respectively. Compound I crystallizes in Pna2(1): a = 9.9595(4) Å, b = 9.4423(3) Å, and c = 4.8186(2) Å. Compound II crystallizes in P2(1): a = 6.3742(3) Å, b = 3.5963(2) Å, c = 14.3641(7) Å, and ? = 110.787(3)°. Both materials display second-harmonic-generation activity; however, compound I is type 1 non-phase-matchable, whereas compound II is type 1 phase-matchable.

Project description:Phase change materials (PCMs) in the form of fibers or fibrous mats with exceptional thermal energy storage ability and tunable working temperature are of high interest to produce smart thermoregulating textiles, useful for increasing human thermal comfort while avoiding energy waste. Common organic PCMs suffer from instability in their molten state, which limits their applicability as highly performing fibrous systems. In this work, electrospun fibrous mats made of polyethylene oxide (PEO), a PCM with excellent thermal properties and biocompatibility, were fabricated and their shape instability in the molten state was improved through UV photo-crosslinking. The characterization aimed to assess the performance of these shape-stable electrospun mats as nanofibrous PCMs for thermal management applications. In addition to an enhanced resistance to water-based solvents, UV-cured electrospun PEO mats demonstrated a remarkable latent heat (≈112 J/g), maintained over 80 heating/cooling cycles across the phase change temperature. Moreover, their morphological stability above their melting point was demonstrated both macroscopically and microscopically, with the retention of the initial nanofibrous morphology. Tensile mechanical tests demonstrated that the UV crosslinking considerably enhanced the ultimate properties of the fibrous mat, with a five-fold increase in both the tensile strength (from 0.15 MPa to 0.74 MPa) and the strain at break (from 2.5% to 12.2%) compared to the uncrosslinked mat. In conclusion, the photo-crosslinked electrospun PEO material exhibited high thermal properties and good shape stability without displaying leakage; accordingly, in the proposed PCM system, the necessity for encapsulation or use of a supporting layer has been eliminated. Photo-crosslinking thus proved itself as an effective, fast, and environmentally friendly method to dramatically improve the shape-stability of nanofibrous PEO electrospun mats for smart thermoregulating textiles.

Project description:Direct air capture (DAC) removal of anthropogenic CO2 from the atmosphere is imperative to slow the catastrophic effects of global climate change. Numerous materials are being investigated, including various alkaline inorganic metal oxides that form carbonates via DAC. Here we explore metastable early d0 transition metal peroxide molecules that undergo stabilization via multiple routes, including DAC. Specifically here, we describe via experiment and computation the mechanistic conversion of A3V(O2)4 (tetraperoxovanadate, A = K, Rb, Cs) to first a monocarbonate VO(O2)2(CO3)3-, and ultimately HKCO3 plus KVO4. Single crystal X-ray structures of rubidium and cesium tetraperoxovanadate are reported here for the first time, likely prior-challenged by instability. Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), 51V solid state NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), tandem thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry (TGA-MS) along with calculations (DFT, density functional theory) all converge on mechanisms of CO2 capture and release that involve the vanadium centre, despite the end product of a 300 days study being bicarbonate and metavanadate. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Spectroscopy along with a wet chemical assay and computational studies evidence the presense of ∼5% adventitous superoxide, likely formed by peroxide reduction of vanadium, which also stabilizes via the reaction with CO2. The alkalis have a profound effect on the stability of the peroxovanadate compounds, stability trending K > Rb > Cs. While this translates to more rapid CO2 capture with heavier alkalis, it does not necessarily lead to capture of more CO2. All compounds capture approximately two equivalents CO2 per vanadium centre. We cannot yet explain the reactivity trend of the alkali peroxovanadates, because any change in speciation of the alkalis from reactions to product is not quantifiable. This study sets the stage for understanding and implementing transition metal peroxide species, including peroxide-functionalized metal oxides, for DAC.
