On the desmitracheate "micronetine" genus Nippononeta Eskov, 1992 (Araneae, Linyphiidae).

ABSTRACT: The desmitracheate system in a "micronetine" genus Nippononeta Eskov, 1992 is recognized for the first time in the present study. This makes the subfamilial placement of this genus problematic. A morphological study was conducted for Nippononetakurilensis Eskov, 1992 (the type species of Nippononeta) and Nippononetacoreana (Paik, 1991). Characters of genitalia and tracheal system, as well as some somatic characters were studied in detail by using scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), and compared with those of Agyneta. Updated descriptions of the genus Nippononeta and its two species are presented. Putative synapomorphies for Nippononeta and Agyneta are provided, as well as some putative synapomorphies shared by the two genera. The results imply that both scaped epigynum and desmitracheate tracheal system are probably homoplastic. The placement of Nippononeta and Agyneta within Linyphiidae need to be resolved in future studies.

A new synonymy is proposed: Ambengana complexipalpis Millidge & Russell-Smith, 1992 (the type species of Ambengana) syn. n. with Neriene birmanica (Thorell, 1887). Therefore,the genus Ambengana Millidge & Russell-Smith, 1992 syn. n. is synonymized with Neriene Blackwall, 1833. Acanoides gen. n., a new spider genus from China with a note on the taxonomic status of Acanthoneta Eskov & Marusik, 1992 (Araneae, Linyphiidae, Micronetinae).

Project description:A new "micronetine" genus Acanoides gen. n. is erected to accommodate two species from China: Acanoides beijingensis sp. n. as the type species and Acanoides hengshanensis (Chen & Yin, 2000), comb. n., with the females described for the first time. The genitalic characters and somatic features of the new genus were studied by means of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The monophyly of the new genus was tested by a phylogenetic analysis based on molecular data. Descriptions of the new genus, the new species and the new combination are presented; SEM images and microscopy pictures of somatic and genitalic characters are provided in detail. To distinguish from other genera with similar genitalic characters, we compare the new genus with the species of Acanthoneta Eskov & Marusik, 1992, Epibellowia Tanasevitch, 1996 and Wubanoides Eskov, 1986. Four putative synapomorphies for Acanoides gen. n. are suggested to support its monophyly that could be tested in the future. Furthermore, redescriptions of the epigynal morphology of Acanthoneta aggressa Chamberlin & Ivie, 1943 (Nearctic) and on the male of A. dokutchaevi Eskov & Marusik, 1993 (Far East Asia, firstly recorded from China) are provided. Based on comparison with Poeciloneta, from which Acanthoneta stat. n. was separated by Saaristo and Tanasevitch (1996), a revised diagnosis is proposed to support the generic status.

Callosa gen. n., a new troglobitic genus from southwest China (Araneae, Linyphiidae).

Project description:A new linyphiid genus Callosagen. n., with two new species Callosa ciliatasp. n. (♂♀, type species) and Callosa baiseensissp. n. (♂♀), from southwest China are described. Detailed description of genitalic characters and somatic features is provided, as well as light microscopy and SEM micrographs of each species. Callosagen. n. was found in caves in Yunnan and Guangxi, and its copulatory organs are similar to those of Bathyphantes and Porrhomma, but differ greatly in details. The monophyly and placement of Callosagen. n. are supported by the results of molecular analysis.

A review of the Holarctic genus Tmeticus Menge, 1868 (Araneae, Linyphiidae), with a description of a new genus.

Project description:Eight species attributed to Tmeticus are reviewed; five are redescribed and illustrated: Tmeticus affinis (Blackwall, 1885), Tmeticus bipunctis (Bösenberg & Strand, 1906), Tmeticus nigriceps Kulczyński, 1916, Tmeticus ornatus (Emerton, 1914) and Tmeticus tolli Kulczyński, 1908. The new genus, Paratmeticus gen. n. is erected for Tmeticus bipunctis, and a new combination is established: Paratmeticus bipunctis (Bösenberg & Strand, 1906), comb. n. Three species names: Gongylidium vile Kulczyński, 1885, syn. n., Tmeticus difficilis Kulczyński, 1926, syn. n. and Tmeticus dubius Kulczyński, 1926, syn. n., are synonymized with Tmeticus tolli Kulczyński, 1908. Although Gongylidium vile has date priority over Tmeticus tolli it is synonymized because of the lack of usage. Three species from Japan attributed to Tmeticus: Tmeticus neserigonoides Saito & Ono, 2001, Tmeticus nigerrimus Saito & Ono, 2001 and Tmeticus vulcanicus Saito & Ono, 2001 are not related to Tmeticus affinis, the type species of the genus, and their affinities remain unclear. The male of Tmeticus nigriceps is described for the first time.

Centromerusyadongensis Hu & Li, 1987 is transferred to Zhezhoulinyphia gen. nov. and a new combination, Z.yadongensis (Hu & Li, 1987), comb. nov. is proposed.

Project description:BackgroundThe genus Flagelliphantes Saaristo & Tanasevitch, 1996 was proposed by Saaristo & Tanasevitch, 1996 to accommodate three ex-Lepthyphantes species distributed in northern Eurasia. Male Flagelliphantes are easlily recognised by having a hood-shaped thumb on the embolus. The females have a long, S-shaped scape and the posterior median plate of the epigyne is grossly enlarged ("hypertrophied").New informationWhile examining Linyphiidae Blackwall, 1859 specimens from Yunxia Cave in China's Jilin Province, we discovered a new cave-dwelling species of the genus Flagelliphantes, F.yunxia sp. n. In this paper, we provide detailed description and photos of its diagnostic somatic and genitalic features. It is the first record of the genus from China.

Distribution, habitat affinities and phenology of the Micrargus herbigradus-species group (Araneae: Linyphiidae) in Poland.

Project description:We review the known information on the distribution and habitat affinities of the Micrargus herbigradus-species group in Poland. The analysis is based on a thorough literature survey, our own materials, and verification of some older collections. We give new diagnostic drawings and review the characters that are useful in identification of species within the group. Three species are present in Poland: M. herbigradus (Blackwall, 1854), M. apertus (O.-P. Cambridge, 1870) and M. georgescuae Millidge, 1976. The latter is recorded for the first time in the country, and we add numerous new localities for the two former species. Micrargus herbigradus is common and widespread in Poland, living in various habitats, with only a slight preference to forests. In contrast, M. apertus is widely distributed but rarely found, while its affinity to forests is the highest within the group. The records of this species are most numerous in lowland forests (up to c. 300 m a.s.l), but it can also be found at higher altitudes. M. georgescuae is found only in montane habitats, both in the Sudetes and the Carpathian Mountains, from above 650 m a.s.l. The adults of all three species occur the whole year round, but seem to be most abundant in May and June.

Project description:The phylogenetic analyses based on molecular data demonstrate that all "micronetine" species of a desmitracheate system form a monophyly. Macrargus Dahl, 1886 is a "micronetine" genus, the species of which have a haplotracheate system in general, while Macrargus alpinus Li & Zhu, 1993 was found to have a desmitracheate system; this makes its generic placement problematic. According to the results of phylogenetic analysis, we transfer Macrargus alpinus to another genus as Nippononeta alpina (Li & Zhu, 1993), comb. n., and provide a redescription of its genital characters and somatic features. Comparisons with other "micronetine" species with a desmitracheate system are provided. Putative synapomorphies for Nippononeta, the clade Nippononeta + Agyneta, and for the "desmitracheate micronetines" clade, as well as their relationship with Helophora, are provided and discussed.
