An illustrated key to Neotropical species of the genus Meteorus Haliday (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Euphorinae).

ABSTRACT: A comprehensive key for 75 species of Meteorus distributed across 15 Neotropical countries is presented. Eleven new species from Bolivia, Costa Rica and Ecuador are described: Meteorusalbistigma, Meteoruscarolae, Meteoruseurysaccavorus, Meteorusfallacavus, Meteorusflavistigma, Meteorushaimowitzi, Meteorusmagnoculus, Meteorusmartinezi, Meteorusmicrocavus, Meteorusnoctuivorus and Meteorusorion. Expanded range distributions are recorded for Meteorusandreae, Meteorusfarallonensis, Meteorusguineverae, Meteorusjerodi, Meteoruskraussi, Meteoruspapiliovorus and Meteorusquimbayensis. The host of Meteorusjerodi is reported for the first time: a noctuid larva feeding on Asteraceae. Meteoruspapiliovorus is recorded attacking Papilionidae larvae in Ecuador, therefore displaying a similar host family preference as formerly documented from Costa Rica and Colombia.

Project description:Six Japanese species belonging to the genus Aridelus Marshall, 1898 (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) were recorded and photographed. Three species, A.dubius Belokobylskij, A.egregius Schmiedeknecht and A.rufotestaceus Tobias (= Aridelusrufiventris Luo & Chen syn. nov.), are new to Japan, and a new species, A.rutilipoides sp. nov. is described. An identification key to the Japanese species of Aridelus is also provided. In addition, new host records are provided, i.e., A.flavicans Chao reared from Homoeocerusunipunctatus and Riptortuspedestris (Alydidae) and A.rufotestaceus reared from Glauciassubpunctatus (Pentatomidae). The Alydidae is a newly recorded host family of Aridelus.

The genus is represented by four new species from Shaanxi province (NW China), which are described and illustrated. An identification key to the species in China is presented, a key to the genera of the Trachionus group and notes on the relationships with other Palaearctic species are added.

Review of species of the genus Heterospilus Haliday, 1836 (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Doryctinae) from the Korean Peninsula.

Project description:This article reviews the species of the genus Heterospilus Haliday from South Korea. Nine species, Heterospiluschinjuensis sp. nov., H.gajwaensis sp. nov., H.heulriensis sp. nov., H.hyungkeunleei sp. nov., H.maseongus sp. nov., H.suriensis sp. nov., H taehoani sp. nov., H.weolchulsanus sp. nov., and H.yeogiensis sp. nov., are described as new to science. The species Heterospilusfujianensis Tang, Belokobylskij, He & Chen, 2013 is recorded for the fauna of Korea for the first time; H.ater Fischer, 1960 is synonymised under H.austriacus (Szépligeti, 1906). Heterospilusrubicola Fischer, 1960 and H.corsicus (Marshall, 1888) are excluded from the fauna of Korea. A key to all Heterospilus species known from the Korean Peninsula is compiled.

The genus Vipio Latreille (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) in the Neotropical Region.

Project description:The genus Vipio Latreille is revised for the Neotropical region (south of Nicaragua). All species are fully illustrated. Thirteen species are recognised of which five (V. boliviensis, V. carinatus, V. godoyi, V. hansoni, and V. lavignei) are described as new, all with descriptions attributable to Inayatullah, Shaw & Quicke. All previously described Neotropical species are redescribed. A key is included for the identification of the Vipio species known from the Americas south of Nicaragua, and all species are illustrated.

Comparative mitogenomes reveal diverse and novel gene rearrangements in the genus Meteorus (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

Project description:Meteorus Haliday, 1835 is a cosmopolitan genus within Braconidae (Hymenoptera). They are koinobiont endoparasitoids of Coleoptera or Lepidoptera larvae. Only one mitogenome of this genus was available. Here, we sequenced and annotated three mitogenomes of Meteorus species, and found that the tRNA gene rearrangements in these mitogenomes were rich and diverse. Compared with the ancestral organization, only seven tRNAs (trnW, trnY, trnL2, trnH, trnT, trnP and trnV) were conserved and trnG had its own unique location in the four mitogenomes. This dramatic tRNA rearrangement was not observed in mitogenomes of other insect groups before. In addition, the tRNA cluster (trnA-trnR-trnN-trnS1-trnE-trnF) between nad3 and nad5 was rearranged into two patterns, i.e., trnE-trnA-trnR-trnN-trnS1 and trnA-trnR-trnS1-trnE-trnF-trnN. The phylogenetic results showed that the Meteorus species formed a clade within the subfamily Euphorinae, and were close to Zele (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Euphorinae). In the Meteorus, two clades were reconstructed: M. sp. USNM and Meteorus pulchricornis forming one clade while the remaining two species forming another clade. This phylogenetic relationship also matched the tRNA rearrangement patterns. The diverse and phylogenetic signal of tRNA rearrangements within one genus provided insights into tRNA rearrangements of the mitochondrial genome at genus/species levels in insects.

Dickyyuellaargentinensis a tentative new genus and species of Cardiochilinae (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) from the Neotropical region.

Project description:Dickyyuella Kang & Sharkey, gen. nov. is a novel addition to the microgastroid complex of Braconidae. Taxonomic assignment within this complex posed challenges initially due to the presence of putatively plesiomorphic characters. However, closer examination revealed affiliations with the microgastroid complex, supported by morphological features such as the location of spiracles on the first metasomal tergum and the absence of spiracles on the seventh metasomal tergum. Based on the following two morphological characters, the presence of an inverted Y-shaped groove on the first metasomal tergum and pectinate tarsal claws, Dickyyuella Kang & Sharkey, gen. nov. is tentatively placed within Cardiochilinae Ashmead, 1900 despite uncertainties surrounding phylogenetic relationships. This article provides the diagnosis of Dickyyuella Kang & Sharkey, gen. nov., the description of Dickyyuellaargentinensis Kang & Sharkey, sp. nov., and a discussion of the taxonomic placement of the new genus within the microgastroid complex.

A chromosome-level genome assembly of Meteorus pulchricornis Wesmael (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

Project description:Meteorus pulchricornis Wesmael (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is an important parasitoid of lepidopteran insects. So far, only three scaffold-level genomes have been published for the genus Meteorus. In this study, we present a high-quality, chromosome-level genome assembly of M. pulchricornis, characterized by high accuracy and contiguity. This assembly was achieved using Oxford Nanopore Technologies long-read, MGI-SEQ short-read, and Hi-C sequencing methods. The final assembly was 158.5 Mb in genome size, with 153.8 Mb (97.03%) assigned to ten pseudochromosomes. The scaffold N50 length reached 17.51 Mb, and the complete Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs (BUSCO) score was 99.3%. The genome contains 28.29 Mb of repetitive elements, accounting for 18.39% of the total genome size. We identified 12,342 protein-coding genes, of which 12,308 genes were annotated functionally. Our investigation into gene family evolution in M. pulchricornis showed that 563 gene families expanded, 1,739 contracted, and 58 underwent rapid evolution. The high-quality genome assembly we report here is advantageous for further research on parasitoid wasps and provides a foundational data resource for natural enemy studies.

A key to new world distatrix mason (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), with descriptions of six new reared neotropical species.

Project description:Six new species of the genus Distatrix Mason from Central and South America, D. loretta, D. xanadon, D. vigilis, D. pitillaensis, D. pandora Grinter, n. sp., and D. antirrheae Whitfield & Grinter, n. sp., are described from large-scale caterpillar inventory endeavors, mostly from the larvae of geometrid moths. Biological information and diagnostic features that distinguish these species from other previously described Distatrix, especially those from the Neotropical region, are provided; and the first key to New World species is presented. The new discoveries expand our knowledge of the World's widespread Distatrix fauna by about a third, suggesting that similar survey efforts in other poorly sampled regions will reveal numerous additional undescribed species.
