Flexible color perception depending on the shape and positioning of achromatic contours.

ABSTRACT: In this study, we present several demonstrations of color averaging between luminance boundaries. In each of the demonstrations, different black outlines are superimposed on one and the same colored surface. Whereas perception without these outlines comprises a blurry colored gradient, superimposing the outlines leads to a much clearer binary color percept, with different colors perceived on each side of the boundary. These demonstrations show that the color of the perceived surfaces is flexible, depending on the exact shape of the outlines that define the surface, and that different positioning of the outlines can lead to different, distinct color percepts. We argue that the principle of color averaging described here is crucial for the brain in building a useful model of the distal world, in which differences within object surfaces are perceptually minimized, while differences between surfaces are perceptually enhanced.

A tactile perception method with flexible grating structural color.

Project description:Affordable high-resolution cameras and state-of-the-art computer vision techniques have led to the emergence of various vision-based tactile sensors. However, current vision-based tactile sensors mainly depend on geometric optics or marker tracking for tactile assessments, resulting in limited performance. To solve this dilemma, we introduce optical interference patterns as the visual representation of tactile information for flexible tactile sensors. We propose a novel tactile perception method and its corresponding sensor, combining structural colors from flexible blazed gratings with deep learning. The richer structural colors and finer data processing foster the tactile estimation performance. The proposed sensor has an overall normal force magnitude accuracy of 6 mN, a planar resolution of 79 μm and a contact-depth resolution of 25 μm. This work presents a promising tactile method that combines wave optics, soft materials and machine learning. It performs well in tactile measurement, and can be expanded into multiple sensing fields.

Chromatic adaptation from achromatic stimuli with implied color.

Project description:Previous research has shown that the typical or memory color of an object is perceived in images of that object, even when the image is achromatic. We performed an experiment to investigate whether the implied color in greyscale images could influence the perceived color of subsequent, simple stimuli. We used a standard top-up adaptation technique along with a roving-pedestal, two-alternative spatial forced-choice method for measuring perceptual bias without contamination from any response or decision biases. Adaptors were achromatic images of natural objects that are normally seen with diagnostic color. We found that, in some circumstances, greyscale adapting images had a biasing effect, shifting the achromatic point toward the implied color, in comparison with phase-scrambled images. We interpret this effect as evidence of adaptation in chromatic signaling mechanisms that receive top-down input from knowledge of object color. This implied color adaptation effect was particularly strong from images of bananas, which are popular stimuli in memory color experiments. We also consider the effect in a color constancy context, in which the implied color is used by the visual system to estimate an illuminant, but find our results inconsistent with this explanation.

The role of color in the perception of three-dimensional shape.

Project description:The human visual system can derive information about three-dimensional (3D) shape from the structure of light reflected by surfaces. Most research on single static images has focused on the 3D shape information contained in variations of brightness caused by interactions between the illumination and local surface orientation ("shading").1-6 Although color can enhance the recovery of surface shading when color and brightness vary independently,7-9 there is no evidence that color alone provides any information about 3D shape. Here, we show that the wavelength-dependent reflectance of chromatic materials provides information about the 3D shape of translucent materials. We show that different wavelengths of light undergo varying degrees of subsurface light transport, which generates multiple forms of spatial structure: wavelengths that are weakly reflected generate shading-like image structure, linked to 3D surface orientation, whereas wavelengths that penetrate more deeply into the material are primarily constrained by the direction of surface curvature (convexities and concavities).10 Psychophysical experiments demonstrate that the enhanced perception of 3D shape in chromatic translucent surfaces arises from the shading structure generated by weakly reflected wavelengths, which, in turn, generates correlated spatial variations in saturation. These results demonstrate a new functional role for color in the perception of the 3D shape of translucent materials.

Large enhancement of simultaneous color contrast by white flanking contours.

Project description:Simultaneous color contrast and assimilation are mutually opposing effects on color appearance, and their magnitude depends on spatial context. The Monnier-Shevell illusion induces a large color shift by a synergy of simultaneous assimilation and contrast using the alternating color of proximal and distant surrounds. The illusion induces a prominent effect along the blue-yellow color axis, but a subtle effect along the orthogonal color axis. In this study, we report an illusion generated by an extremely thin gray line on a cyan background that appears reddish when the line is flanked by thin white contours. We quantified the color appearance of the gray line in a color matching experiment and found that the color shift of the gray line with white contours induced large color shifts. It is also known that luminance contrast between a center and its surrounds affects the magnitude of simultaneous color contrast. However, our color contrast effects were larger for a dark line rather than for a pale line. In contrast, the perceived color shift of the line without the contours increased as the luminance of the gray line increased, supporting the known effect of Kirschmann's third law. These results indicate that Kirschmann's third law fails to explain the perceived color shift of our illusion, even after accounting for optical factors like aberrations. Observed color shifts could be explained by an augmented synergy theory based on intensity space, rather than chromaticity.

Complex Shapes Are Bluish, Darker, and More Saturated; Shape-Color Correspondence in 3D Object Perception.

Project description:It has been shown that there is a non-random association between shape and color. However, the results of previous studies on the shape-color correspondence did not converge. To address the issue, we focused on shape complexity among a number of shape properties, particularly in terms of 3D shape, and parametrically manipulated the shape complexity and all three components of color. With two experiments, the current study aimed to closely examine the correspondence between shape complexity of 3D shape and color in terms of hue (Experiment 1), luminance, and saturation (Experiment 2). Participants were presented with the 3D shapes in either visual or visuo-haptic modes of exploration. Subsequently, they had to pick from a color palette the color best matching each shape of the object. In Experiment 1, we found that as shapes became more complex, the best associated hue changed from those with long wavelengths to ones with short wavelengths. Results of Experiment 2 demonstrated that as the shapes grew more complex, the associated luminance decreased, and saturation increased. Additionally, adding haptic exploration to visual exploration strengthened the association - for saturation in particular - with the pattern of shape-color correspondence maintained. Taken together, we demonstrated that complex shapes are associated with bluish, darker and more saturated colors, suggesting that shape complexity has a systematic relationship with color including hue, luminance, and saturation.

Chromaticity of color perception and object color knowledge.

Project description:Sensorimotor theories of semantic memory require overlap between conceptual and perceptual representations. One source of evidence for such overlap comes from neuroimaging reports of co-activation during memory retrieval and perception; for example, regions involved in color perception (i.e., regions that respond more to colored than grayscale stimuli) are activated by retrieval of object color. One unanswered question from these studies is whether distinctions that are observed during perception are likewise observed during memory retrieval. That is, are regions defined by a chromaticity effect in perception similarly modulated by the chromaticity of remembered objects (e.g., lemons more than coal)? Subjects performed color perception and color retrieval tasks while undergoing fMRI. We observed increased activation during both perception and memory retrieval of chromatic compared to achromatic stimuli in overlapping areas of the left lingual gyrus, but not in dorsal or anterior regions activated during color perception. These results support sensorimotor theories but suggest important distinctions within the conceptual system.

A Neuroelectrical Brain Imaging Study on the Perception of Figurative Paintings against Only their Color or Shape Contents.

Project description:In this study, the cortical activity correlated with the perception and appreciation of different set of pictures was estimated by using neuroelectric brain activity and graph theory methodologies in a group of artistic educated persons. The pictures shown to the subjects consisted of original pictures of Titian's and a contemporary artist's paintings (Orig dataset) plus two sets of additional pictures. These additional datasets were obtained from the previous paintings by removing all but the colors or the shapes employed (Color and Style dataset, respectively). Results suggest that the verbal appreciation of Orig dataset when compared to Color and Style ones was mainly correlated to the neuroelectric indexes estimated during the first 10 s of observation of the pictures. Always in the first 10 s of observation: (1) Orig dataset induced more emotion and is perceived with more appreciation than the other two Color and Style datasets; (2) Style dataset is perceived with more attentional effort than the other investigated datasets. During the whole period of observation of 30 s: (1) emotion induced by Color and Style datasets increased across the time while that induced of the Orig dataset remain stable; (2) Color and Style dataset were perceived with more attentional effort than the Orig dataset. During the entire experience, there is evidence of a cortical flow of activity from the parietal and central areas toward the prefrontal and frontal areas during the observation of the images of all the datasets. This is coherent from the notion that active perception of the images with sustained cognitive attention in parietal and central areas caused the generation of the judgment about their aesthetic appreciation in frontal areas.

Shape-color associations in an unrestricted color choice paradigm.

Project description:Since Kandinsky's claim for fundamental shape-color associations, several studies have revealed that those tendencies were not generalizable to the entire population and that different associations were more prevalent. Past studies, however, lacked a methodology that allowed participants to freely report their shape-color preferences. Here, we report data from 7,517 Danish individuals, using a free choice full color wheel for five different geometrical shapes. We find significant shape-hue associations for circle-red/yellow, triangle-green/yellow, square-blue, and pentagon/hexagon-magenta. The significant shape-hue associations are also more saturated than non-significant ones for the circle, triangle, and square. At the conceptual level, basic shapes, which show stronger associations, are linked to primary colors, and non-basic shapes to secondary colors. Shape-color associations seem indeed to follow the Berlin-Kay stages of entry into languages. This pattern had previously been described for graphemes and weekday-color associations. The methodology employed in our study can be repeated in different cultural contexts in the future. We also provide another instance of color associations for ordinal concepts that follow the stages of entry into languages.

Impaired perception of illusory contours and cortical hypometabolism in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Project description:Neuroimaging evidence suggests that areas of the higher-order visual cortex, including the lateral occipital complex (LOC), are engaged in the perception of illusory contours; however, these findings remain unsubstantiated by human lesion data. Therefore, we assessed the presentation time necessary to perceive two types of illusory contours formed by Kanizsa figures or aligned line ends in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Additionally, we used 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) to measure regional cerebral glucose metabolism in PD patients. Although there were no significant differences in the stimulus durations required for perception of illusory contours formed by aligned line ends between PD patients and controls, PD patients required significantly longer stimulus durations for the perception of Kanizsa illusory figures. Difficulty in perceiving Kanizsa illusory figures was correlated with hypometabolism in the higher-order visual cortical areas, including the posterior inferior temporal gyrus. These findings indicate an association between dysfunction in the posterior inferior temporal gyrus, a region corresponding to a portion of the LOC, and impaired perception of Kanizsa illusory figures in PD patients.

Non-rigid illusory contours and global shape transformations defined by spatiotemporal boundary formation.

Project description:Spatiotemporal boundary formation (SBF) is the perception of form, global motion, and continuous boundaries from relations of discrete changes in local texture elements (Shipley and Kellman, 1994). In two experiments, small, circular elements underwent small displacements whenever an edge of an invisible (virtual) object passed over them. Unlike previous studies that examined only rigidly translating objects, we tested virtual objects whose properties changed continuously. Experiment 1 tested rigid objects that changed in orientation, scale, and velocity. Experiment 2 tested objects that transformed non-rigidly taking on a series of shapes. Robust SBF occurred for all of the rigid transformations tested, as well as for non-rigid virtual objects, producing the perception of continuously bounded, smoothly deforming shapes. These novel illusions involve perhaps the most extreme cases of visual perception of continuous boundaries and shape from minimal information. They show that SBF encompasses a wider range of illusory phenomena than previously understood, and they present substantial challenges for existing models of SBF.
