Two new species of Edmockfordia Garcia Aldrete (Psocodea, 'Psocoptera', Epipsocidae), from Valle del Cauca, Colombia, and description of the female E.chiquibulensis Garcia Aldrete.

ABSTRACT: Two new species of Edmockfordia García Aldrete, from Valle del Cauca, Colombia, and the female of Edmockfordiachiquibulensis García Aldrete, are described and illustrated. A key to the species of Edmockfordia is included; the genus was previously known only from Belize. The genus is re-diagnosed to include female characters. The distribution of the genus is considerably widened, from Belize to northeastern South America.

Project description:Two sister species of Loneura, from Valle del Cauca, Colombia, are here described and illustrated. They constitute a new species group that modifies the scheme of classification, proposed earlier for the genus by García Aldrete et al. (2011b). The new group is characterized by having the central sclerite of the male hypandrium with four posterior projections. A key to the males of Group II is included. The types are deposited in the Entomological Museum of the Universidad del Valle. Colombia may prove to be the most species rich area for Loneura.

The conditions for women's autonomy: Statistical data for Valle del Cauca.

Project description:In this article, we describe the data set on theconditions for women's autonomy in the municipalities of Cali, Buenaventura, Yumbo, and Jamundí (Colombia). The database was developed by the Observatoriopara la Equidad de las Mujeres (OEM), an entity resulting from an alliancebetween Universidad Icesi and Fundación WWB Colombia. The OEM's purpose is toconstruct measurements that make it possible to account for women's autonomy,based on three main dimensions: physical autonomy (associated with aspects ofpersonal and family life), economic and financial autonomy (the type of work,income, decision-making with respect to these aspects, entrepreneurship orbusiness units, among others), and leadership and public participation(electoral practices, type of participation, relation to institutions, etc.),while fundamentally, considering women's capacity to make decisions onthese aspects, based on both theirperception and their actions. As well as helping to overcome the limitations ofexisting information, this primary data collection is aimed at generatingvalid, reliable and high-quality inputs to formulate local and national publicpolicies to improve the living conditions of women in Colombia's Pacificregion. The survey, designed and applied by the OEM, was first implemented inOctober and November 2018 through multi-stage probability sampling. The samplesize was 1,507 women in the four mentioned municipalities.

Effects of climate variability on the spatio-temporal distribution of Dengue in Valle del Cauca, Colombia, from 2001 to 2019.

Project description:Dengue is a vector-borne disease that has increased over the past two decades, becoming a global public health emergency. The transmission of dengue is contingent upon various factors, among which climate variability plays a significant role. However, there remains substantial uncertainty regarding the underlying mechanisms. This study aims to investigate the spatial and temporal patterns of dengue risk and to quantify the associated risk factors in Valle del Cauca, Colombia, from 2001 to 2019. To achieve this, a spatio-temporal Bayesian hierarchical model was developed, integrating delayed and non-linear effects of climate variables, socio-economic factors, along with spatio-temporal random effects to account for unexplained variability. The results indicate that average temperature is positively associated with dengue risk 0-2 months later, showing a 35% increase in the risk. Similarly, high precipitation levels lead to increased risk approximately 2-3 months later, while relative humidity showed a constant risk within a 6 months-lag. These findings could be valuable for local health authorities interested in developing early warning systems to predict future risks in advance.

Project description:Five new species of Euplocania from Colombia belonging in four species groups are here described and illustrated. They increase to 22 the number of species described in the genus, thirteen of which are endemic to Colombia, with one species shared with Brazil and Peru. Three new species groups of Euplocania are here diagnosed. A key to the identification of males of Colombian Euplocania is included.

Project description:Four species of Triplocania, three with M3 simple, based on male specimens and one with forewing M3 forked, based on male and female specimens, are here described and illustrated, namely: Triplocaniabravoi sp. n. (Napo: Ecuador), Triplocaniaerwini sp. n. (Napo: Ecuador), Triplocaniatrifida sp. n. (Mato Grosso and Rondônia: Brazil) and Triplocanialamasoides sp. n. (Rondônia: Brazil). They differ from all the other species in the genus, in which the males are known, by the hypandrium and phallosome structures. The female is first described for the M3 forked group. The identification key for males of the M3 forked group is updated.

Leptus alberti n. sp. (Trombidiformes: Erythraeidae) parasitizing free-living colonies of Apis mellifera, Partamona peckolti, Paratrigona eutaeniata and Tetragonisca angustula in Totoro and Valle del Cauca, Colombia.

Project description:This study examined the ectoparasites in free-living wild bee colonies in Totoró, Cauca Department, and Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Researchers collected 2116 bee specimens: 620 from Cauca (200 Apis mellifera, 320 Partamona peckolti, and 100 Paratrigona eutaeniata) and 1496 from Valle del Cauca (Dagua, Tocota, Buga, Cali, Pradera), including 1498 A. mellifera and 48 Tetragonisca angustula. Using microscopic and stereoscopic techniques and a special taxonomic key, the study identified the first recorded presence of Leptus (Leptus) alberti n. sp. (Acari: Erythraeidae) in colonies of free-living Africanized A. mellifera and stingless bees, including P. peckolti, P. eutaeniata, and T. angustula in Cauca and Valle del Cauca. This finding updates the reported species for South America. The presence of L. (L.) alberti n. sp. was identified in four sample points in the Totoró-Cauca area, with a 75% parasitic prevalence in free-living bee colonies at three of the four localities, specifically in hives located in the wild forest of Totoró. Two Meliponini species were also identified: one in P. peckolti and another in P. eutaeniata. In Cauca, the prevalence was 5% for A. mellifera and 0.3% for Meliponini. In Valle del Cauca, L. alberti n. sp. was observed in five out of 22 localities, resulting in a 23% prevalence in wild A. mellifera. Additionally, a 4.16% prevalence (2/48) of L. alberti n. sp. was found in T. angustula. Six A. mellifera specimens tested positive for L. (L.) alberti n. sp., as did one P. peckolti and one P. eutaeniata specimen. No other external mites were detected in the collected samples.

Project description:A review of species of the genus Neopsocopsis Badonnel, 1936 is presented. Four species are redescribed, viz. Neopsocopsis hirticornis (Reuter, 1893), Neopsocopsis quinquedentata (Li & Yang, 1988), Neopsocopsis profunda (Li, 1995), and Neopsocopsis flavida (Li, 1989), as well as the description of one new species, Neopsocopsis convexasp. n. Seven new synonymies are proposed as follows: Pentablaste obconica Li syn. n. and Pentablaste clavata Li syn. n. of Neopsocopsis hirticornis, Pentablaste tetraedrica Li syn. n. of Neopsocopsis longiptera, Neoblaste schizopetala Li syn. n. and Neoblaste flavae Li syn. n. of Neopsocopsis profunda, Blastopsocidus pini Li syn. n. and Pentablaste lanceolata Li syn. n. of Neopsocopsis flavida. Neopsocopsis hirticornis (Reuter, 1893) is recorded from Japan and China for the first time, and Neopsocopsis longiptera Vishnyakova, 1986 is newly recorded from China. Illustrated keys to adult males and females are presented.

A new genus of Ptiloneuridae, its position within the family, and descriptions of five species (Psocodea, 'Psocoptera').

Project description:Upon examination of ptiloneurid specimens recently collected in forests of natural areas and Natural National Parks in Colombia, ten males and seven females were found that represent five species of an undescribed ptiloneurid genus. It differs from the other genera in the family by characters of the wings, hypandrium, phallosome, epiproct, female gonapophyses, and sternum IX. An identification key to the males of the genera of Ptiloneuridae, and a key to the species of the new genus are presented. A test on the validity and monophyly of the new genus, and its position within the family was also conducted.

A remarkable new species of Pamianthe (Amaryllidaceae) from the Department of Cauca, Colombia.

Project description:A new saxicolous species of Amaryllidaceae tentatively assigned to the tribe Clinantheae, Pamiantheecollis Silverst., Meerow & Sánchez-Taborda, is described from the western slope of the Cordillera Occidental in the department of Cauca, Colombia. The new species differs from the two hitherto known species of Pamianthe in its yellow flowers and in its nearly obsolete perianth tube. The near loss of the perianth tube may be correlated with a change in pollinator. The new species lacks a bulb; it produces a large number of winged seeds that are wind-dispersed. A key to the species of Pamianthe is provided. This is the first record of the genus Pamianthe for Colombia. The phylogenetic position of the genus Pamianthe is discussed.

Into the unknown: the first barcode-assisted checklist of Psocoptera (Insecta, Psocodea) of Georgia with a census on country species richness.

Project description:This checklist reports 47 species of Psocoptera from 15 families and three suborders from Georgia, of which 31 species are recorded for the first time, increasing the known fauna of the country by more than 65%. Of these, 37 species have been barcoded, representing 210 Barcode Identification Numbers (BINs). An additional 14 species are expected to occur in Georgia but remain undiscovered, meaning that only ≈ 77% of the fauna is currently documented. Barcodes, comments on distributions, and images of voucher specimens are given followed by a map of the sampling sites.
