Biological invasion and biological control select for different life histories.

ABSTRACT: Biological invaders have long been hypothesized to exhibit the fast end of the life-history spectrum, with early reproduction and a short lifespan. Here, we examine the rapid evolution of life history within the harlequin ladybird Harmonia axyridis. The species, once used as a biological control agent, is now a worldwide invader. We show that biocontrol populations have evolved a classic fast life history during their maintenance in laboratories. Invasive populations also reproduce earlier than native populations, but later than biocontrol ones. Invaders allocate more resources to reproduction than native and biocontrol individuals, and their reproduction is spread over a longer lifespan. This life history is best described as a bet-hedging strategy. We assert that invasiveness cannot be explained only by invoking faster life histories. Instead, the evolution of life history within invasive populations can progress rapidly and converge to a fine-tuned evolutionary match between the invaded environment and the invader.

Project description:AimLumbricid earthworms are invasive across northern North America, causing notable changes in forest ecosystems. During their range expansion they encountered harsher climatic conditions compared to their native ranges in evolutionary short time. This study investigated if (1) dispersal barriers, (2) climatic selection, or (3) anthropogenic activities, such as fishing bait disposal, structure the dispersal of free-living earthworm populations.LocationNorth America, forest habitats along former Wisconsinan glaciation line.TaxonLumbricus terrestris, L. rubellus.MethodsLumbricus terrestris and L. rubellus co-occur in the same habitats but differ in ecology and use Conservation approach for goblin species were sampled in five transects ranging from the east to the west coast of northern North America, including major dispersal barriers, three different climate zones, and bait shops near sampling locations. Genetic diversity and structure were compared between the two species, and the presence of free-living bait shop genotypes was assessed using four markers (COI, 16S rDNA, 12S rDNA, H3).ResultsPopulations of both species were genetically diverse with some geographic structure, which was more pronounced in L. terrestris than in L. rubellus. Common haplotypes were present in all regions, but locally restricted haplotypes also occurred. Further, two distinct genetic clades of L. terrestris co-occurred only in the two most distant transects (Alberta and Minnesota). Genotypes identical to bait individuals were omnipresent in field populations of L. terrestris.Main conclusionsGenetic diversity was high in both species, and invasive populations represented a genetic subset of European earthworms. Geographic and climatic dispersal barriers affected the less mobile species, L. rubellus, resulting in differences in genetic structure between the two species. Our results indicate common long-distance dispersal vectors and specific vectors affecting only L. terrestris. The roles of climate and anthropogenic activities are discussed, providing additional explanations of dispersal and new insights into establishment of invasive earthworms.

Project description:Recurrence is a major complication of some meningiomas. Although there were many studies on biomarkers associated with higher grades or increased aggressiveness, few studies specifically examined longitudinal samples of primary meningiomas and recurrences from the same patients for molecular life history. We studied 99 primary and recurrent meningiomas from 42 patients by FISH for 22q, 1q, 1p, 3p, 5q, 6q, 10p, 10q, 14q, 18q, CDKN2A/B homozygous deletion, ALT (Alternative Lengthening of Telomere), TERT re-arrangement, targeted sequencing and TERTp sequencing. Although NF2 mutation and 22q were well known to be aetiological events in meningiomas, we found that in these paired meningiomas, combining the two events resulted in an NF2/22q group (57 tumors from 25 patients) which were almost mutually exclusive with those cases without these two changes (42 tumors from 17 patients) for NF2/22q. No other molecular changes were totally unique to NF2/22q or non-NF2/22q tumors. For molecular evolution, NF2/22q meningiomas had higher cytogenetic abnormalities than non-NF2/22q meningiomas (p = 0.003). Most of the cytogenetic changes in NF2/22q meningiomas were present from the outset whereas for non-NF2/22q meningiomas, cytogenetic events were uncommon in the primary tumors and most were acquired in recurrences. For non-NF2/22q tumors, CDKN2A/B homozygous deletion, 1q gain, 18p loss, 3p loss, and ALT were preferentially found in recurrences. Mutations were largely conserved between primary and recurrent tumors. Phylogenetic trees showed 11/11 patients with multiple recurrent tumors had a conserved evolutionary pattern. We conclude that for molecular life history, NF2 and 22q should be regarded as a group. NF2/22q recurring meningiomas showed more cytogenetic abnormalities in the primary tumors, whereas non-NF2/22q meningiomas showed CDKN2A/B deletion and other cytogenetic abnormalities and ALT at recurrences. Although chromosome 1p loss is a known poor prognostic marker in meningiomas, it was also associated with a shorter TBR (time between resection) in this cohort (p = 0.002).
