Characterizing pressure-induced uranium C-H agostic bonds.

ABSTRACT: The diuranium(III) compound [UN''2]2(μ-η(6):η(6)-C6H6) (N''=N(SiMe3)2) has been studied using variable, high-pressure single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and density functional theory . In this compound, the low-coordinate metal cations are coupled through π- and δ-symmetric arene overlap and show close metal-CH contacts with the flexible methyl CH groups of the sterically encumbered amido ligands. The metal-metal separation decreases with increasing pressure, but the most significant structural changes are to the close contacts between ligand CH bonds and the U centers. Although the interatomic distances are suggestive of agostic-type interactions between the U and ligand peripheral CH groups, QTAIM (quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules) computational analysis suggests that there is no such interaction at ambient pressure. However, QTAIM and NBO analyses indicate that the interaction becomes agostic at 3.2 GPa.

Project description:The first structural examples of complexes with uranium-germanium bonds are presented, namely, bis-[3,5-bis-(tri-fluoro-meth-yl)phenyl-2κC 1](hydrido-2κH)(iodido-1κI)bis-[1,1(η5)-penta-methyl-cyclo-penta-dien-yl]germaniumuranium(Ge-U), [GeU(C10H15)2(C8H3F6)2HI], and bis-[3,5-bis-(tri-fluoro-meth-yl)phenyl-2κC 1](fluorido-1κI)(hydrido-2κH)bis-[1,1(η5)-penta-methyl-cyclo-penta-dien-yl]germaniumuranium(Ge-U), [GeU(C10H15)2(C8H3F6)2FH]. The two complexes both have a long U-Ge bond [distances of 3.0428 (7) and 3.0524 (7) Å].

Polar molecules catalyze CO insertion into metal-alkyl bonds through the displacement of an agostic C-H bond.

Project description:The insertion of CO into metal-alkyl bonds is the key C-C bond-forming step in many of the most important organic reactions catalyzed by transition metal complexes. Polar organic molecules (e.g., tetrahydrofuran) have long been known to promote CO insertion reactions, but the mechanism of their action has been the subject of unresolved speculation for over five decades. Comprehensive computational studies [density functional theory (DFT)] on the prototypical system Mn(CO)5(arylmethyl) reveal that the polar molecules do not promote the actual alkyl migration step. Instead, CO insertion (i.e. alkyl migration) occurs rapidly and reversibly to give an acyl complex with a sigma-bound (agostic) C-H bond that is not easily displaced by typical ligands (e.g. phosphines or CO). The agostic C-H bond is displaced much more readily, however, by the polar promoter molecules, even though such species bind only weakly to the metal center and are themselves then easily displaced; the facile kinetics of this process are attributable to a hydrogen bonding-like interaction between the agostic C-H bond and the polar promoter. The role of the promoter is to thereby catalyze isomerization of the agostic product of CO insertion to give an [Formula: see text]-C,O-bound acyl product that is more easily trapped than the agostic species. This ability of such promoters to displace a strongly sigma-bound C-H bond and to subsequently undergo facile displacement themselves is without reported precedent, and could have implications for catalytic reactions beyond carbonylation.

Highly unsaturated binuclear butadiene iron carbonyls: quintet spin states, perpendicular structures, agostic hydrogen atoms, and iron-iron multiple bonds.

Project description:The highly unsaturated binuclear butadiene iron carbonyls (C(4)H(6))(2)Fe(2)(CO)(n) (n = 2, 1) have been examined using density functional theory. For (C(4)H(6))(2)Fe(2)(CO)(n) (n = 2, 1), both coaxial and perpendicular structures are found. The global minima of (C(4)H(6))(2)Fe(2)(CO)(n) (n = 2, 1) are the perpendicular structures 2Q-1 and 1Q-1, respectively, with 17- and 15-electron configurations for the iron atoms leading to quintet spin states. The Fe=Fe distance of 2.361 Å (M06-L) in the (C(4)H(6))(2)Fe(2)(CO)(2) structure 2Q-1 suggests a formal double bond. The Fe≡Fe bond distance in the (C(4)H(6))(2)Fe(2)(CO) structure 1Q-1 is even shorter at 2.273 Å (M06-L), suggesting a triple bond. Higher energy (C(4)H(6))(2)Fe(2)(CO)(n) (n = 2, 1) structures include structures in which a bridging butadiene ligand is bonded to one of the iron atoms as a tetrahapto ligand and to the other iron atom through two agostic hydrogen atoms from the end CH(2) groups. Singlet (C(4)H(6))(2)Fe(2)(CO) structures with formal Fe-Fe quadruple bonds of lengths ∼2.05 Å were also found but at very high energies (∼47 kcal/mol) relative to the global minimum.

<i>Ortho</i>-aryl substituted DPEphos ligands: rhodium complexes featuring C-H anagostic interactions and B-H agostic bonds.

Project description:The synthesis of new Schrock-Osborn Rh(i) pre-catalysts with ortho-substituted DPEphos ligands, [Rh(DPEphos-R)(NBD)][BArF 4] [R = Me, OMe, iPr; ArF = 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3], is described. Along with the previously reported R = H variant, variable temperature 1H NMR spectroscopic and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies show that these all have axial (C-H)⋯Rh anagostic interactions relative to the d8 pseudo square planar metal centres, that also result in corresponding downfield chemical shifts. Analysis by NBO, QTAIM and NCI methods shows these to be only very weak C-H⋯Rh bonding interactions, the magnitudes of which do not correlate with the observed chemical shifts. Instead, as informed by Scherer's approach, it is the topological positioning of the C-H bond with regard to the metal centre that is important. For [Rh(DPEphos-iPr)(NBD)][BArF 4] addition of H2 results in a Rh(iii) iPr-C-H activated product, [Rh(κ3,σ-P,O,P-DPEphos-iPr')(H)][BArF 4]. This undergoes H/D exchange with D2 at the iPr groups, reacts with CO or NBD to return Rh(i) products, and reaction with H3B·NMe3/tert-butylethene results in a dehydrogenative borylation to form a complex that shows both a non-classical B-H⋯Rh 3c-2e agostic bond and a C-H⋯Rh anagostic interaction at the same metal centre.

Emergence of comparable covalency in isostructural cerium(iv)- and uranium(iv)-carbon multiple bonds.

Project description:We report comparable levels of covalency in cerium- and uranium-carbon multiple bonds in the iso-structural carbene complexes [M(BIPMTMS)(ODipp)2] [M = Ce (1), U (2), Th (3); BIPMTMS = C(PPh2NSiMe3)2; Dipp = C6H3-2,6-iPr2] whereas for M = Th the M[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond interaction is much more ionic. On the basis of single crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR, IR, EPR, and XANES spectroscopies, and SQUID magnetometry complexes 1-3 are confirmed formally as bona fide metal(iv) complexes. In order to avoid the deficiencies of orbital-based theoretical analysis approaches we probed the bonding of 1-3 via analysis of RASSCF- and CASSCF-derived densities that explicitly treats the orbital energy near-degeneracy and overlap contributions to covalency. For these complexes similar levels of covalency are found for cerium(iv) and uranium(iv), whereas thorium(iv) is found to be more ionic, and this trend is independently found in all computational methods employed. The computationally determined trends in covalency of these systems of Ce ∼ U > Th are also reproduced in experimental exchange reactions of 1-3 with MCl4 salts where 1 and 2 do not exchange with ThCl4, but 3 does exchange with MCl4 (M = Ce, U) and 1 and 2 react with UCl4 and CeCl4, respectively, to establish equilibria. This study therefore provides complementary theoretical and experimental evidence that contrasts to the accepted description that generally lanthanide-ligand bonding in non-zero oxidation state complexes is overwhelmingly ionic but that of uranium is more covalent.

Characterizing the Collagen Network Structure and Pressure-Induced Strains of the Human Lamina Cribrosa.

Project description:PurposeThe purpose of this study was to measure the 2D collagen network structure of the human lamina cribrosa (LC), analyze for the correlations with age, region, and LC size, as well as the correlations with pressure-induced strains.MethodsThe posterior scleral cups of 10 enucleated human eyes with no known ocular disease were subjected to ex vivo inflation testing from 5 to 45 mm Hg. The optic nerve head was imaged by using second harmonic generation imaging (SHG) to identify the LC collagen structure at both pressures. Displacements and strains were calculated by using digital volume correlation of the SHG volumes. Nine structural features were measured by using a custom Matlab image analysis program, including the pore area fraction, node density, and beam connectivity, tortuosity, and anisotropy.ResultsAll strain measures increased significantly with higher pore area fraction, and all but the radial-circumferential shear strain (Erθ) decreased with higher node density. The maximum principal strain (Emax) and maximum shear strain (Γmax) also increased with larger beam aspect ratio and tortuosity, respectively, and decreased with higher connectivity. The peripheral regions had lower node density and connectivity, and higher pore area fraction, tortuosity, and strains (except for Erθ) than the central regions. The peripheral nasal region had the lowest Emax, Γmax, radial strain, and pore area fraction.ConclusionsFeatures of LC beam network microstructure that are indicative of greater collagen density and connectivity are associated with lower pressure-induced LC strain, potentially contributing to resistance to glaucomatous damage.

Experimental evidence characterizing pressure fluctuations at the seafloor-water interface induced by an earthquake.

Project description:An unusual combination of a laboratory experiment and in situ measurement of pressure fluctuations during an earthquake allows us to resolve some uncertainties in bottom pressure recorders (BPRs). In situ BPRs are usually contaminated by seismic waves during earthquakes; thus uncertainty still remains in the data obtained from BPRs. We examine in situ BPR data together with pressure variations produced by a dead weight (a pressure standard) in a laboratory experiment during an earthquake. The features recorded by the in situ BPRs are analysed as part of the overall experiment. We demonstrated that a 10-kg dead weight on a piston-cylinder across an area of 10 mm2 is capable of reproducing pressure fluctuations at a depth of 1000 m in the water column. The experiment also indicates that the internal mechanics of BPRs are isolated from incident seismic waves, suggesting that BPRs measure true in situ pressures without instrumentally induced disturbances. This constitutes the first instance in which pressure fluctuations recorded by in situ BPRs during an earthquake were reproduced using a pressure standard in the laboratory.

Construction of heterometallic clusters with multiple uranium-metal bonds by using dianionic nitrogen-phosphorus ligands.

Project description:Compared with the prevalent metal-metal bond in transition metals, examples of the actinide-metal bond in heterometallic clusters are rare. Herein, a series of heterometallic clusters with multiple uranium-metal bonds has been prepared based on two newly synthesized nitrogen-phosphorus ligands L1 {O[(CH2)2NHP(iPr)2]2} and L2 {[CH2O(CH2)2NHP(iPr)2]2}. Different P-P distances, 6.069 and 4.464 Å, are observed in the corresponding uranium complexes 1 {O[(CH2)2NP(iPr)2]2UCl2} and 2 {[CH2O(CH2)2NP(iPr)2]2UCl2}, respectively, and lead to the different coordination modes with transition metals. The reactions of zero-valent group 10 metal compounds with complex 1 generate heterometallic clusters (3-U2Ni2 and 4-U2Pd2) featuring four uranium-metal bonds; whereas reactions with 2 afford one-dimensional metal-chain 5-(UNi)n, bimetallic species 6-UPd, and a tri-platinum bridged diuranium molecular cluster 7-U2Pt3. Complex 5-(UNi)n represents the first infinite chain containing the U-M bond and 7-U2Pt3 is the first species with multiple U-Pt bonds. This study further highlights the important role of ligands in the construction of multiple uranium-metal bonds and may allow the synthesis of novel d-f heterometallic clusters and the investigation of their applications in catalysis and small-molecule activation.

Cooperative dihydrogen activation with unsupported uranium-metal bonds and characterization of a terminal U(iv) hydride.

Project description:Cooperative chemistry between two or more metal centres can show enhanced reactivity compared to the monometallic fragments. Given the paucity of actinide-metal bonds, especially those with group 13, we targeted uranium(iii)-aluminum(i) and -gallium(i) complexes as we envisioned the low-valent oxidation state of both metals would lead to novel, cooperative reactivity. Herein, we report the molecular structure of [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U-E(C5Me5)], E = Al, Ga, Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, and their reactivity with dihydrogen. The reaction of H2 with the U(iii)-Al(i) complex affords a trihydroaluminate complex, [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(μ2-(H)3)-Al(C5Me5)] through a formal three-electron metal-based reduction, with concomitant formation of a terminal U(iv) hydride, [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(H)]. Noteworthy is that neither U(iii) complexes nor [(C5Me5)Al]4 are capable of reducing dihydrogen on their own. To make the terminal hydride in higher yields, the reaction of [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(THF)] with half an equivalent of diethylzinc generates [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(CH2CH3)] or treatment of [(C5Me5)2U(i)(Me)] with KOMes forms [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(CH3)], which followed by hydrogenation with either complex cleanly affords [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(H)]. All complexes have been characterized by spectroscopic and structural methods and are rare examples of cooperative chemistry in f element chemistry, dihydrogen activation, and stable, terminal ethyl and hydride compounds with an f element.

Contrasting behaviour under pressure reveals the reasons for pyramidalization in tris(amido)uranium(III) and tris(arylthiolate) uranium(III) molecules.

Project description:A range of reasons has been suggested for why many low-coordinate complexes across the periodic table exhibit a geometry that is bent, rather a higher symmetry that would best separate the ligands. The dominating reason or reasons are still debated. Here we show that two pyramidal UX3 molecules, in which X is a bulky anionic ligand, show opposite behaviour upon pressurisation in the solid state. UN″3 (UN3, N″ = N(SiMe3)2) increases in pyramidalization between ambient pressure and 4.08 GPa, while U(SAr)3 (US3, SAr = S-C6H2-tBu3-2,4,6) undergoes pressure-induced planarization. This capacity for planarization enables the use of X-ray structural and computational analyses to explore the four hypotheses normally put forward for this pyramidalization. The pyramidality of UN3, which increases with pressure, is favoured by increased dipole and reduction in molecular volume, the two factors outweighing the slight increase in metal-ligand agostic interactions that would be formed if it was planar. The ambient pressure pyramidal geometry of US3 is favoured by the induced dipole moment and agostic bond formation but these are weaker drivers than in UN3; the pressure-induced planarization of US3 is promoted by the lower molecular volume of US3 when it is planar compared to when it is pyramidal.
