Domain wall of a ferromagnet on a three-dimensional topological insulator.

ABSTRACT: Topological insulators (TIs) show rich phenomena and functions which can never be realized in ordinary insulators. Most of them come from the peculiar surface or edge states. Especially, the quantized anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) without an external magnetic field is realized in the two-dimensional ferromagnet on a three-dimensional TI which supports the dissipationless edge current. Here we demonstrate theoretically that the domain wall of this ferromagnet, which carries edge current, is charged and can be controlled by the external electric field. The chirality and relative stability of the Neel wall and Bloch wall depend on the position of the Fermi energy as well as the form of the coupling between the magnetic moments and orbital of the host TI. These findings will pave a path to utilize the magnets on TI for the spintronics applications.

Spin pumping in ferromagnet-topological insulator-ferromagnet heterostructures.

Project description:Topological insulators (TIs) are enticing prospects for the future of spintronics due to their large spin-orbit coupling and dissipationless, counter-propagating conduction channels in the surface state. However, a means to interact with and exploit the topological surface state remains elusive. Here, we report a study of spin pumping at the TI-ferromagnet interface, investigating spin transfer dynamics in a spin-valve like structure using element specific time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, and ferromagnetic resonance. Gilbert damping increases approximately linearly with increasing TI thickness, indicating efficient behaviour as a spin sink. However, layer-resolved measurements suggest that a dynamic coupling is limited. These results shed new light on the spin dynamics of this novel material class, and suggest great potential for TIs in spintronic devices, through their novel magnetodynamics that persist even up to room temperature.

Quantum Capacitance of a Topological Insulator-Ferromagnet Interface.

Project description:We study the quantum capacitance in a topological insulator thin film system magnetized in the in-plane direction in the presence of an out-of-plane magnetic field and hexagonal warping. To first order, the modification in quantum capacitance due to hexagonal warping compared to the clean case, where both the in-plane magnetization and hexagonal warping are absent, is always negative, and increases in magnitude monotonically with the energy difference from the charge neutrality point. In contrast, the change in the quantum capacitance due to in-plane magnetization oscillates with the energy in general, except when a certain relation between the inter-surface coupling, out of plane Zeeman energy splitting and magnetic field strength is satisfied. In this special case, the quantum capacitance remains unchanged by the in-plane magnetization for all energies.

Three-dimensional photonic topological insulator without spin-orbit coupling.

Project description:Spin-orbit coupling, a fundamental mechanism underlying topological insulators, has been introduced to construct the latter's photonic analogs, or photonic topological insulators (PTIs). However, the intrinsic lack of electronic spin in photonic systems leads to various imperfections in emulating the behaviors of topological insulators. For example, in the recently demonstrated three-dimensional (3D) PTI, the topological surface states emerge, not on the surface of a single crystal as in a 3D topological insulator, but along an internal domain wall between two PTIs. Here, by fully abolishing spin-orbit coupling, we design and demonstrate a 3D PTI whose topological surface states are self-guided on its surface, without extra confinement by another PTI or any other cladding. The topological phase follows the original Fu's model for the topological crystalline insulator without spin-orbit coupling. Unlike conventional linear Dirac cones, a unique quadratic dispersion of topological surface states is directly observed with microwave measurement. Our work opens routes to the topological manipulation of photons at the outer surface of photonic bandgap materials.

Heterostructured ferromagnet-topological insulator with dual-phase magnetic properties.

Project description:The introduction of ferromagnetism at the surface of a topological insulator (TI) produces fascinating spin-charge phenomena. It has been assumed that these fascinating effects are associated with a homogeneous ferromagnetic (FM) layer possessing a single type of magnetic phase. However, we obtained phase separation within the FM layer of a Ni80Fe20/Bi2Se3 heterostructure. This phase separation was caused by the diffusion of Ni into Bi2Se3, forming a ternary magnetic phase of Ni:Bi2Se3. The inward diffusion of Ni led to the formation of an FeSe phase outward, transforming the original Ni80Fe20/Bi2Se3 into a sandwich structure comprising FeSe/Ni:Bi2Se3/Bi2Se3 with dual-phase magnetic characteristics similar to that driven by the proximity effect. Such a phenomenon might have been overlooked in previous studies with a strong focus on the proximity effect. X-ray magnetic spectroscopy revealed that FeSe and Ni:Bi2Se3 possess horizontal and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, respectively. The overall magnetic order of the heterostructure can be easily tuned by adjusting the thickness of the Bi2Se3 as it compromises the magnetic orders of the two magnetic phases. This discovery is essential to the quantification of spin-charge phenomena in similar material combinations where the FM layer is composed of multiple elements.

Coexistence of All-Order Topological States in a Three-Dimensional Phononic Topological Crystalline Insulator.

Project description:Classical-wave topological materials lacking intrinsic half-integer spins are less robust while more tunable. Here, we explore a single 3-dimensional phononic topological crystalline insulator that simultaneously exhibits a whole family of first-order quadratic surface, second-order hinge, and third-order corner states within the same bandgap. Such a topological crystalline insulator hosting all-order phases originates from the different topological nature when hierarchically projected onto different facets and lower dimensions, thus free from trivial cladding crystals. Our work offers an ideal platform for either robust wave propagation or localization in on-demand dimensions and may facilitate dimension division multiplexing technology.

Emergent helical edge states in a hybridized three-dimensional topological insulator.

Project description:As the thickness of a three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) becomes comparable to the penetration depth of surface states, quantum tunneling between surfaces turns their gapless Dirac electronic structure into a gapped spectrum. Whether the surface hybridization gap can host topological edge states is still an open question. Herein, we provide transport evidence of 2D topological states in the quantum tunneling regime of a bulk insulating 3D TI BiSbTeSe2. Different from its trivial insulating phase, this 2D topological state exhibits a finite longitudinal conductance at ~2e2/h when the Fermi level is aligned within the surface gap, indicating an emergent quantum spin Hall (QSH) state. The transition from the QSH to quantum Hall (QH) state in a transverse magnetic field further supports the existence of this distinguished 2D topological phase. In addition, we demonstrate a second route to realize the 2D topological state via surface gap-closing and topological phase transition mechanism mediated by a transverse electric field. The experimental realization of the 2D topological phase in a 3D TI enriches its phase diagram and marks an important step toward functionalized topological quantum devices.

Finite momentum Cooper pairing in three-dimensional topological insulator Josephson junctions.

Project description:Unconventional superconductivity arising from the interplay between strong spin-orbit coupling and magnetism is an intensive area of research. One form of unconventional superconductivity arises when Cooper pairs subjected to a magnetic exchange coupling acquire a finite momentum. Here, we report on a signature of finite momentum Cooper pairing in the three-dimensional topological insulator Bi2Se3. We apply in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields to proximity-coupled Bi2Se3 and find that the in-plane field creates a spatially oscillating superconducting order parameter in the junction as evidenced by the emergence of an anomalous Fraunhofer pattern. We describe how the anomalous Fraunhofer patterns evolve for different device parameters, and we use this to understand the microscopic origin of the oscillating order parameter. The agreement between the experimental data and simulations shows that the finite momentum pairing originates from the coexistence of the Zeeman effect and Aharonov-Bohm flux.

Low Power In-Memory Computation with Reciprocal Ferromagnet/Topological Insulator Heterostructures.

Project description:The surface state of a 3D topological insulator (3DTI) is a spin-momentum locked conductive state, whose large spin hall angle can be used for the energy-efficient spin-orbit torque based switching of an overlying ferromagnet (FM). Conversely, the gated switching of the magnetization of a separate FM in or out of the TI surface plane can turn on and off the TI surface current. By exploiting this reciprocal behavior, we can use two FM/3DTI heterostructures to design an integrated 1-transistor 1-magnetic tunnel junction random access memory unit (1T1MTJ RAM) for an ultra low power Processing-in-Memory (PiM) architecture. Our calculation involves combining the Fokker-Planck equation with the Nonequilibrium Green Function (NEGF) based flow of conduction electrons and Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) based dynamics of magnetization. Our combined approach allows us to connect device performance metrics with underlying material parameters, which can guide proposed experimental and fabrication efforts.

Converse Flexoelectricity in van der Waals (vdW) Three-Dimensional Topological Insulator Nanoflakes.

Project description:Low-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs) have been overlooked, regarding their electromechanical properties. In this study, we experimentally investigate the electromechanical coupling of low-dimensional 3D TIs with a centrosymmetric crystal structure, where a binary compound, bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3), is taken as an example. Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) results of Bi2Se3 nanoflakes show that the material exhibits both out-of-plane and in-plane electromechanical responses. With careful analyses, the electromechanical responses are verified to arise from the converse flexoelectricity. The Bi2Se3 nanoflakes have a decreasing effective out-of-plane piezoelectric coefficient d 33 eff with the thickness increasing, with the d 33 eff value of ∼0.65 pm V-1 for the 37 nm-thick sample. The measured effective out-of-plane piezoelectric coefficient is mainly contributed by the flexoelectric coefficient, μ39, which is estimated to be approximately 0.13 nC m-1. The results can help to understand the flexoelectricity of low-dimensional vdW TIs with centrosymmetric crystal structures, which is crucial for the design of nanoelectromechanical devices and spintronics built by vdW TIs.

Spin Hall photoconductance in a three-dimensional topological insulator at room temperature.

Project description:Three-dimensional topological insulators are a class of Dirac materials, wherein strong spin-orbit coupling leads to two-dimensional surface states. The latter feature spin-momentum locking, i.e., each momentum vector is associated with a spin locked perpendicularly to it in the surface plane. While the principal spin generation capability of topological insulators is well established, comparatively little is known about the interaction of the spins with external stimuli like polarized light. We observe a helical, bias-dependent photoconductance at the lateral edges of topological Bi2Te2Se platelets for perpendicular incidence of light. The same edges exhibit also a finite bias-dependent Kerr angle, indicative of spin accumulation induced by a transversal spin Hall effect in the bulk states of the Bi2Te2Se platelets. A symmetry analysis shows that the helical photoconductance is distinct to common longitudinal photoconductance and photocurrent phenomena, but consistent with optically injected spins being transported in the side facets of the platelets.
