Light-induced crawling of crystals on a glass surface.

ABSTRACT: Motion is an essential process for many living organisms and for artificial robots and machines. To date, creating self-propelled motion in nano-to-macroscopic-sized objects has been a challenging issue for scientists. Herein, we report the directional and continuous motion of crystals on a glass surface when irradiated simultaneously with two different wavelengths, using simple azobenzenes as a photoresponsive organic compound. The direction of the motion can be controlled by the position of the light sources, and the crystals can even climb vertical surfaces. The motion is driven by crystallization and melting at the front and rear edges of the crystal, respectively, via photochemical conversion between the crystal and liquid phases induced by the trans-cis isomerization of azobenzenes. This finding could lead to remote-controlled micrometre-sized vehicles and valves on solid substrates.

Effect of Surface Properties on the Photo-Induced Crawling Motion of Azobenzene Crystals on Glass Surfaces.

Project description:Photo-induced crawling motion of a crystal of 3,3'-dimethylazobenzene (DMAB) on a glass substrate having different surface properties was studied. When exposed to UV and visible lights simultaneously from different directions, crystals crawl continuously on a glass surface. On a hydrophilic surface, the crystals crawled faster than those on other surfaces but crystals showed spreading while they moved. On hydrophobic surfaces, on the other hand, the crystals showed little shape change and slower crawling motion. The contact angles of the liquid phase of DMAB on surface-modified glass substrates showed positive correlation with the water contact angles. The interaction of melted azobenzene with glass surfaces plays an important role for the crawling motion. We proposed models to explain the asymmetric condition that leads to the directional motion. Specifically by considering the penetration length of UV and visible light sources, it was successfully shown that the depth of light penetration is different at the position of a crystal. This creates a nonequilibrium condition where melting and crystallization are predominant in the same crystal.

A Durable and Self-Cleaning Superhydrophobic Surface Prepared by Precipitating Flower-Like Crystals on a Glass-Ceramic Surface.

Project description:Herein, a superhydrophobic surface with superior durability was fabricated on a glass-ceramic surface by crystallization, hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching, and surface grafting. The as-prepared glass-ceramic surface was composed of three-dimensional flower-like micro-clusters, which were self-assembled from numerous nanosheets. Such a dual-scale rough surface exhibited superhydrophobicity, with a water contact angle (WCA) of 170.3° ± 0.1° and a sliding angle (SA) of ~2° after grafting with 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (FAS-17). This can be attributed to the synergistic effect between the dual-scale structure and surface chemistry. Furthermore, this surface exhibited excellent self-cleaning properties, stability against strong acid and strong alkali corrosion, and anti-stripping properties.

Light-induced shift current vortex crystals in moire heterobilayers.

Project description:Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) moiré superlattices provide an emerging platform to explore various light-induced phenomena. Recently, the discoveries of novel moiré excitons have attracted great interest. The nonlinear optical responses of these systems are however still underexplored. Here, we report investigation of light-induced shift currents (a second-order response generating DC current from optical illumination) in the WSe2/WS2 moiré superlattice. We identify a striking phenomenon of the formation of shift current vortex crystals-i.e., two-dimensional periodic arrays of moiré-scale current vortices and associated magnetic fields with remarkable intensity under laboratory laser setup. Furthermore, we demonstrate high optical tunability of these current vortices-their location, shape, chirality, and magnitude can be tuned by the frequency, polarization, and intensity of the incident light. Electron-hole interactions (excitonic effects) are found to play a crucial role in the generation and nature of the shift current intensity and distribution. Our findings provide a promising all-optical control route to manipulate nanoscale shift current density distributions and magnetic field patterns, as well as shed light on nonlinear optical responses in moiré quantum matter and their possible applications.

Efficient Light-Induced Phase Transitions in Halogen-Bonded Liquid Crystals.

Project description:Here, we present a new family of light-responsive, fluorinated supramolecular liquid crystals (LCs) showing efficient and reversible light-induced LC-to-isotropic phase transitions. Our materials design is based on fluorinated azobenzenes, where the fluorination serves to strengthen the noncovalent interaction with bond-accepting stilbazole molecules, and increase the lifetime of the cis-form of the azobenzene units. The halogen-bonded LCs were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, hot-stage polarized optical microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. Simultaneous analysis of light-induced changes in birefringence, absorption, and optical scattering allowed us to estimate that <4% of the mesogenic units in the cis-form suffices to trigger the full LC-to-isotropic phase transition. We also report a light-induced and reversible crystal-to-isotropic phase transition, which has not been previously observed in supramolecular complexes. In addition to fundamental understanding of light-responsive supramolecular complexes, we foresee this study to be important in the development of bistable photonic devices and supramolecular actuators.

Light-induced surface patterning of alumina.

Project description:Micro/nano-patterned alumina surfaces are important in a variety fields such as chemical/biotechnology, surface science, and microelectro-mechanical systems. However, for patterning alumina surfaces, it still remains a challenge to have a lithographic tool that has large flexibility in design layouts, structural reconfigurability, and a simple fabrication process. In this work, a new alumina-patterning platform that uses a photo-reconfigurable azobenzene-alumina composite as an imprinting material is presented. Under far-field irradiation, the azobenzene-alumina anisotropically flows in the direction parallel to the light polarization. Accordingly, an arbitrarily designed azobenzene-alumina composite by imprinting can be deterministically reconfigured by light polarization and irradiation time. The photo-reconfigured azobenzene-alumina is then converted to pure alumina through calcination in an air atmosphere, which provides thin crack-free alumina patterns with a high structural fidelity. The novel combination of photo-reconfigurable azobenzene moieties and an alumina precursor for imprinting the material provides large flexibility in designing and controlling geometric parameters of the alumina pattern, which potentially offers significant value in various micro/nanotechnology fields.

Cooperative light-induced breathing of soft porous crystals via azobenzene buckling.

Project description:Although light is a prominent stimulus for smart materials, the application of photoswitches as light-responsive triggers for phase transitions of porous materials remains poorly explored. Here we incorporate an azobenzene photoswitch in the backbone of a metal-organic framework producing light-induced structural contraction of the porous network in parallel to gas adsorption. Light-stimulation enables non-invasive spatiotemporal control over the mechanical properties of the framework, which ultimately leads to pore contraction and subsequent guest release via negative gas adsorption. The complex mechanism of light-gated breathing is established by a series of in situ diffraction and spectroscopic experiments, supported by quantum mechanical and molecular dynamic simulations. Unexpectedly, this study identifies a novel light-induced deformation mechanism of constrained azobenzene photoswitches relevant to the future design of light-responsive materials.

Thermal- vs Light-Induced On-Surface Polymerization.

Project description:On-surface polymerization is a powerful bottom-up approach that allows for the growth of covalent architectures with defined properties using the two-dimensional confinement of a highly defined single-crystal surface. Thermal heating is the preferred approach to initiate the reaction, often via cleavage of halogen substituents from the molecular building blocks. Light represents an alternative stimulus but has, thus far, only rarely been used. Here, we present a direct comparison of on-surface polymerization of dibromo-anthracene molecules, induced either thermally or by light, and study the differences between the two approaches. Insight is obtained by a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy, locally studying the polymer shape and size, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which identifies bond formation by averaging over large surface areas. While the polymer length increases slowly with the sample heating temperature, illumination promotes only the formation of short covalent structures, independent of the duration of light exposure. Moreover, irradiation with UV light at different sample temperatures highlights the important role of molecular diffusion across the surface.

Photonic crystals built by time in ancient Roman glass.

Project description:Ancient glass objects typically show distinctive effects of deterioration as a result of environmentally induced physicochemical transformations of their surface over time. Iridescence is one of the distinctive signatures of aging that is most commonly found on excavated glass. In this work, we present an ancient glass fragment that exhibits structural color through surface weathering resulting in iridescent patinas caused by silica reprecipitation in nanoscale lamellae. This archaeological artifact reveals an unusual hierarchically assembled photonic crystal with extremely ordered nanoscale domains, high spectral selectivity, and reflectivity (~90%), that collectively behaves like a gold mirror. Optical characterization paired with nanoscale elemental analysis further underscores the high quality of this structure providing a window into this sophisticated natural photonic crystal assembled by time.

Fatigue-Induced Surface Modification of Zr-Based Metallic Glass under Environmental Conditions.

Project description:Metallic glass (MG), an intrinsic heterogeneous structure at the atomic scale, is one of the promising engineering materials with intriguing physical properties. MG often suffers from the fatigue issue caused by the repetitive mechanical loading, but it is still elusive how the local heterogeneity evolves and affects the macroscale fatigue and deformation against bulky external stress. In this study, we investigate the fatigue effect in Zr-Cu-Al ribbon using a bending fatigue method. We used scanning probe microscopy (SPM) in parallel with X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to figure out the loading effect on the local heterogeneities. The spatially resolved SPM images show that there is a local fluctuation of mechanical and electrical properties on the fatigued side along with morphological deformation compared to the unloaded side. Approaching the broken edge where the fatigue failure occurs, the decaying tendency is not only more dominant but also accelerated by surface oxidation of the fatigued regions. Our study provides a useful guideline on how to monitor structural changes of MGs under fatigue conditions in service and will open a door toward commercialization of high-performance structural engineering materials.

Atomistic processes of surface-diffusion-induced abnormal softening in nanoscale metallic crystals.

Project description:Ultrahigh surface-to-volume ratio in nanoscale materials, could dramatically facilitate mass transport, leading to surface-mediated diffusion similar to Coble-type creep in polycrystalline materials. Unfortunately, the Coble creep is just a conceptual model, and the associated physical mechanisms of mass transport have never been revealed at atomic scale. Akin to the ambiguities in Coble creep, atomic surface diffusion in nanoscale crystals remains largely unclear, especially when mediating yielding and plastic flow. Here, by using in situ nanomechanical testing under high-resolution transmission electron microscope, we find that the diffusion-assisted dislocation nucleation induces the transition from a normal to an inverse Hall-Petch-like relation of the strength-size dependence and the surface-creep leads to the abnormal softening in flow stress with the reduction in size of nanoscale silver, contrary to the classical "alternating dislocation starvation" behavior in nanoscale platinum. This work provides insights into the atomic-scale mechanisms of diffusion-mediated deformation in nanoscale materials, and impact on the design for ultrasmall-sized nanomechanical devices.
