The phase diagram of high-pressure superionic ice.

ABSTRACT: Superionic ice is a special group of ice phases at high temperature and pressure, which may exist in ice-rich planets and exoplanets. In superionic ice liquid hydrogen coexists with a crystalline oxygen sublattice. At high pressures, the properties of superionic ice are largely unknown. Here we report evidence that from 280 GPa to 1.3 TPa, there are several competing phases within the close-packed oxygen sublattice. At even higher pressure, the close-packed structure of the oxygen sublattice becomes unstable to a new unusual superionic phase in which the oxygen sublattice takes the P2(1)/c symmetry. We also discover that higher pressure phases have lower transition temperatures. The diffusive hydrogen in the P2(1)/c superionic phase shows strong anisotropic behaviour and forms a quasi-two-dimensional liquid. The ionic conductivity changes abruptly in the solid to close-packed superionic phase transition, but continuously in the solid to P2(1)/c superionic phase transition.

High-pressure superconducting phase diagram of 6Li: isotope effects in dense lithium.

Project description:We measured the superconducting transition temperature of (6)Li between 16 and 26 GPa, and report the lightest system to exhibit superconductivity to date. The superconducting phase diagram of (6)Li is compared with that of (7)Li through simultaneous measurement in a diamond anvil cell (DAC). Below 21 GPa, Li exhibits a direct (the superconducting coefficient, α, T(c) proportional M(-α), is positive), but unusually large isotope effect, whereas between 21 and 26 GPa, lithium shows an inverse superconducting isotope effect. The unusual dependence of the superconducting phase diagram of lithium on its atomic mass opens up the question of whether the lattice quantum dynamic effects dominate the low-temperature properties of dense lithium.

Temperature-pressure phase diagram of confined monolayer water/ice at first-principles accuracy with a machine-learning force field.

Project description:Understanding the phase behaviour of nanoconfined water films is of fundamental importance in broad fields of science and engineering. However, the phase behaviour of the thinnest water film - monolayer water - is still incompletely known. Here, we developed a machine-learning force field (MLFF) at first-principles accuracy to determine the phase diagram of monolayer water/ice in nanoconfinement with hydrophobic walls. We observed the spontaneous formation of two previously unreported high-density ices, namely, zigzag quasi-bilayer ice (ZZ-qBI) and branched-zigzag quasi-bilayer ice (bZZ-qBI). Unlike conventional bilayer ices, few inter-layer hydrogen bonds were observed in both quasi-bilayer ices. Notably, the bZZ-qBI entails a unique hydrogen-bonding network that consists of two distinctive types of hydrogen bonds. Moreover, we identified, for the first time, the stable region for the lowest-density [Formula: see text] monolayer ice (LD-48MI) at negative pressures (<-0.3 GPa). Overall, the MLFF enables large-scale first-principle-level molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the spontaneous transition from the liquid water to a plethora of monolayer ices, including hexagonal, pentagonal, square, zigzag (ZZMI), and hexatic monolayer ices. These findings will enrich our understanding of the phase behaviour of the nanoconfined water/ices and provide a guide for future experimental realization of the 2D ices.

Room temperature electrofreezing of water yields a missing dense ice phase in the phase diagram.

Project description:Water can freeze into diverse ice polymorphs depending on the external conditions such as temperature (T) and pressure (P). Herein, molecular dynamics simulations show evidence of a high-density orthorhombic phase, termed ice χ, forming spontaneously from liquid water at room temperature under high-pressure and high external electric field. Using free-energy computations based on the Einstein molecule approach, we show that ice χ is an additional phase introduced to the state-of-the-art T-P phase diagram. The χ phase is the most stable structure in the high-pressure/low-temperature region, located between ice II and ice VI, and next to ice V exhibiting two triple points at 6.06 kbar/131.23 K and 9.45 kbar/144.24 K, respectively. A possible explanation for the missing ice phase in the T-P phase diagram is that ice χ is a rare polarized ferroelectric phase, whose nucleation/growth occurs only under very high electric fields.

Stability of Proton Superoxide and its Superionic Transition Under High Pressure.

Project description:Under extreme conditions, condensed matters are subject to undergo a phase transition and there have been many attempts to find another form of hydroxide stabilized over H2O. Here, using Density Functional Theory (DFT)-based crystal structure prediction including zero-point energy, it is that proton superoxide (HO2), the lightest superoxide, can be stabilized energetically at high pressure and temperature conditions. HO2 is metallic at high pressure, which originates from the 𝜋* orbitals overlap between adjacent superoxide anions (O2 -). By lowering pressure, it undergoes a metal-to-insulator transition similar to LiO2. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations reveal that HO2 becomes superionic with high electrical conductivity. The possibility of creating hydrogen-mixed superoxide at lower pressure using a (Lix,H1-x)O2 hypothetical structure is also proposed. This discovery bridges gaps in superoxide and superionicity, guiding the design of various H-O compounds under high pressure.

The pressure-temperature phase diagram of hen lysozyme at low pH.

Project description:The equilibrium unfolding of hen lysozyme at pH 2 was studied as a function of pressure (0.1~700MPa) and temperature (-10°C~50°C) using Trp fluorescence as monitor supplemented by variable pressure 1H NMR spectroscopy (0.1~400MPa). The unfolding profiles monitored by the two methods allowed the two-state equilibrium analysis between the folded (N) and unfolded (U) conformers. The free energy differences ΔG (=GU-GN) were evaluated from changes in the wavelength of maximum fluorescence intensity (λmax) as a function of pressure and temperature. The dependence of ΔG on temperature exhibits concave curvatures against temperature, showing positive heat capacity changes (ΔCp =CpU-CpN= 1.8-1.9 kJ mol-1 deg-1) at all pressures studied (250~400 MPa), while the temperature TS for maximal ΔG increased from about 10°C at 250MPa to about 40°C at 550MPa. The dependence of ΔG on pressure gave negative volume changes (ΔV=VU-VN) upon unfolding at all temperatures studied (-86~-17 mlmol-1 for -10°C~50°C), which increase significantly with increasing temperature, giving a positive expansivity change (Δα~1.07mlmol-1 deg-1). A phase-diagram between N and U (for ΔG=0) is drawn of hen lysozyme at pH 2 on the pressure-temperature plane. Finally, a three-dimensional free energy landscape (ΔG) is presented on the p-T plane.

Electronic phase diagram of high-temperature copper oxide superconductors.

Project description:In order to understand the origin of high-temperature superconductivity in copper oxides, we must understand the normal state from which it emerges. Here, we examine the evolution of the normal state electronic excitations with temperature and carrier concentration in Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+?) using angle-resolved photoemission. In contrast to conventional superconductors, where there is a single temperature scale T(c) separating the normal from the superconducting state, the high-temperature superconductors exhibit two additional temperature scales. One is the pseudogap scale T(?), below which electronic excitations exhibit an energy gap. The second is the coherence scale T(coh), below which sharp spectral features appear due to increased lifetime of the excitations. We find that T(?) and T(coh) are strongly doping dependent and cross each other near optimal doping. Thus the highest superconducting T(c) emerges from an unusual normal state that is characterized by coherent excitations with an energy gap.

Critical phenomena in the temperature-pressure-crowding phase diagram of a protein.

Project description:In the cell, proteins fold and perform complex functions through global structural rearrangements. Function requires a protein to be at the brink of stability to be susceptible to small environmental fluctuations, yet stable enough to maintain structural integrity. These apparently conflicting behaviors are exhibited by systems near a critical point, where distinct phases merge-a concept beyond previous studies indicating proteins have a well-defined folded/unfolded phase boundary in the pressure-temperature plane. Here, by modeling the protein phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK) on the temperature (T), pressure (P), and crowding volume-fraction (ϕ) phase diagram, we demonstrate a critical transition where phases merge, and PGK exhibits large structural fluctuations. Above the critical point, the difference between the intermediate and unfolded phases disappears. When ϕ increases, the critical point moves to lower Tc. We verify the calculations with experiments mapping the T-P-ϕ space, which likewise reveal a critical point at 305 K and 170 MPa that moves to lower Tc as ϕ increases. Crowding places PGK near a critical line in its natural parameter space, where large conformational changes can occur without costly free energy barriers. Specific structures are proposed for each phase based on simulation.

An ultralow-density porous ice with the largest internal cavity identified in the water phase diagram.

Project description:The recent back-to-back findings of low-density porous ice XVI and XVII have rekindled the century-old field of the solid-state physics and chemistry of water. Experimentally, both ice XVI and XVII crystals can be produced by extracting guest atoms or molecules enclosed in the cavities of preformed ice clathrate hydrates. Herein, we examine more than 200 hypothetical low-density porous ices whose structures were generated according to a database of zeolite structures. Hitherto unreported porous EMT ice, named according to zeolite nomenclature, is identified to have an extremely low density of 0.5 g/cm3 and the largest internal cavity (7.88 Å in average radius). The EMT ice can be viewed as dumbbell-shaped motifs in a hexagonal close-packed structure. Our first-principles computations and molecular dynamics simulations confirm that the EMT ice is stable under negative pressures and exhibits higher thermal stability than other ultralow-density ices. If all cavities are fully occupied by hydrogen molecules, the EMT ice hydrate can easily outperform the record hydrogen storage capacity of 5.3 wt % achieved with sII hydrogen hydrate. Most importantly, in the reconstructed temperature-pressure (T-P) phase diagram of water, the EMT ice is located at deeply negative pressure regions below ice XVI and at higher temperature regions next to FAU. Last, the phonon spectra of empty-sII, FAU, EMT, and other zeolite-like ice structures are computed by using the dispersion corrected vdW-DF2 functional. Compared with those of ice XI (0.93 g/cm3), both the bending and stretching vibrational modes of the EMT ice are blue-shifted due to their weaker hydrogen bonds.

Perspective on the phase diagram of cuprate high-temperature superconductors.

Project description:Universal scaling laws can guide the understanding of new phenomena, and for cuprate high-temperature superconductivity the influential Uemura relation showed, early on, that the maximum critical temperature of superconductivity correlates with the density of the superfluid measured at low temperatures. Here we show that the charge content of the bonding orbitals of copper and oxygen in the ubiquitous CuO2 plane, measured with nuclear magnetic resonance, reproduces this scaling. The charge transfer of the nominal copper hole to planar oxygen sets the maximum critical temperature. A three-dimensional phase diagram in terms of the charge content at copper as well as oxygen is introduced, which has the different cuprate families sorted with respect to their maximum critical temperature. We suggest that the critical temperature could be raised substantially if one were able to synthesize materials that lead to an increased planar oxygen hole content at the expense of that of planar copper.

Phase Diagram and High-Temperature Superconductivity of Compressed Selenium Hydrides.

Project description:Recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity (Tc = 190 K) in sulfur hydrides at megabar pressures breaks the traditional belief on the Tc limit of 40 K for conventional superconductors, and opens up the doors in searching new high-temperature superconductors in compounds made up of light elements. Selenium is a sister and isoelectronic element of sulfur, with a larger atomic core and a weaker electronegativity. Whether selenium hydrides share similar high-temperature superconductivity remains elusive, but it is a subject of considerable interest. First-principles swarm structure predictions are performed in an effort to seek for energetically stable and metallic selenium hydrides at high pressures. We find the phase diagram of selenium hydrides is rather different from its sulfur analogy, which is indicated by the emergence of new phases and the change of relative stabilities. Three stable and metallic species with stoichiometries of HSe2, HSe and H3Se are identified above ~120 GPa and they all exhibit superconductive behaviors, of which the hydrogen-rich HSe and H3Se phases show high Tc in the range of 40-110 K. Our simulations established the high-temperature superconductive nature of selenium hydrides and provided useful route for experimental verification.
