Novel lithium-nitrogen compounds at ambient and high pressures.

ABSTRACT: Using ab initio evolutionary simulations, we predict the existence of five novel stable Li-N compounds at pressures from 0 to 100 GPa (Li13N, Li5N, Li3N2, LiN2, and LiN5). Structures of these compounds contain isolated N atoms, N2 dimers, polyacetylene-like N chains and N5 rings, respectively. The structure of Li13N consists of Li atoms and Li12N icosahedra (with N atom in the center of the Li12 icosahedron) - such icosahedra are not described by Wade-Jemmis electron counting rules and are unique. Electronic structure of Li-N compounds is found to dramatically depend on composition and pressure, making this system ideal for studying metal-insulator transitions. For example, the sequence of lowest-enthalpy structures of LiN3 shows peculiar electronic structure changes with increasing pressure: metal-insulator-metal-insulator. This work also resolves the previous controversies of theory and experiment on Li2N2.

Layered polymeric nitrogen in RbN3 at high pressures.

Project description:The structural evolutionary behaviors of nitrogen in RbN3 have been studied up to 300 GPa using a particle swarm optimization structure searching method combined with density functional calculations. Three stable new phases with P-1, P6/mmm and C2/m structure at pressure of 30, 50 and 200 GPa are identified for the first time. The analysis of the crystal structures of three new predicated phases reveals that the transition of N3- ions goes from linear molecules to polymeric chains, benzene-like rings and then to polymeric layers induced by pressure. The electronic structures of three predicted phases reveal that the structural changes are accompanied and driven by the change of orbital hybridization of N atoms from sp to sp(2) and finally to partial sp(3). Most interestingly, the Rb atoms show obvious transition metal-like properties through the occupation of 4d orbitals in high-pressure phases. Moreover, the Rb atoms are characterized by strong hybridization between 4d orbitals of Rb and 2p orbitals of N in C2/m structure. Our studies complete the structural evolution of RbN3 under pressure and reveal for the first time that the Rb atoms in rubidium nitride possess transition element-like properties under pressure.

Unconventional Stoichiometries of Na-O Compounds at High Pressures.

Project description:It has been realized that the stoichiometries of compounds may change under high pressure, which is crucial in the discovery of novel materials. This work uses systematic structure exploration and first-principles calculations to consider the stability of different stoichiometries of Na-O compounds with respect to pressure and, thus, construct a high-pressure stability field and convex hull diagram. Four previously unknown stoichiometries (NaO5, NaO4, Na4O, and Na3O) are predicted to be thermodynamically stable. Four new phases (P2/m and Cmc21 NaO2 and Immm and C2/m NaO3) of known stoichiometries are also found. The O-rich stoichiometries show the remarkable features of all the O atoms existing as quasimolecular O2 units and being metallic. Calculations of the O-O bond lengths and Bader charges are used to explore the electronic properties and chemical bonding of the O-rich compounds. The Na-rich compounds stabilized at extreme pressures (P > 200 GPa) are electrides with strong interstitial electron localization. The C2/c phase of Na3O is found to be a zero-dimensional electride with an insulating character. The Cmca phase of Na4O is a one-dimensional metallic electride. These findings of new compounds with unusual chemistry might stimulate future experimental and theoretical investigations.

Temperature-induced oligomerization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at ambient and high pressures.

Project description:Temperature-induced oligomerization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was found at 500-773 K and ambient and high (3.5 GPa) pressures. The most intensive oligomerization at 1 bar and 3.5 GPa occurs at 740-823 K. PAH carbonization at high pressure is the final stage of oligomerization and occurs as a result of sequential oligomerization and polymerization of the starting material, caused by overlapping of π-orbitals, a decrease of intermolecular distances, and finally the dehydrogenation and polycondensation of benzene rings. Being important for building blocks of life, PAHs and their oligomers can be formed in the interior of the terrestrial planets with radii less than 2270 km.

Stable Lithium Argon compounds under high pressure.

Project description:High pressure can fundamentally alter the bonding patterns of chemical elements. Its effects include stimulating elements thought to be "inactive" to form unexpectedly stable compounds with unusual chemical and physical properties. Here, using an unbiased structure search method based on CALYPSO methodology and density functional total energy calculations, the phase stabilities and crystal structures of Li-Ar compounds are systematically investigated at high pressure up to 300 GPa. Two unexpected LimArn compounds (LiAr and Li3Ar) are predicted to be stable above 112 GPa and 119 GPa, respectively. A detailed analysis of the electronic structure of LiAr and Li3Ar shows that Ar in these compounds attracts electrons and thus behaves as an oxidizing agent. This is markedly different from the hitherto established chemical reactivity of Ar. Moreover, we predict that the P4/mmm phase of Li3Ar has a superconducting transition temperature of 17.6 K at 120 GPa.

Efficient Lithium Growth Control from Ordered Nitrogen-Chelated Lithium-Ion for High Performance Lithium Metal Batteries.

Project description:Lithium (Li) metal has attracted significant attention as next-generation anode material owing to its high theoretical specific capacity and low potential. For enabling the practical application of Li-metal as an anode according to energy demands, suppressing dendrite growth by controlling the Li-ion (Li+) is crucial. In this study, metal-organic frameworks comprising bipyridinic nitrogen linker (M-bpyN) are proposed as 3-dimensional (3D) Li guiding matrix. The proposed approach creates ordered electronegative functional sites that enable the preoccupied Li+ in the ordered bipyridine sites to produce isotropic Li growth. The Li guiding matrix containing 3D ordered bipyridinic N sites introduces preoccupied Li+ sites that attract the Li growth direction, thereby suppressing the dendrite growth during the electrodeposition of Li. After applying the M-bpyN layers, stable lifespan of up to 900 cycles in the Li|M-bpyN|Cu cell and over 1500 h of operation in the Li|M-bpyN|Li symmetric cell is achieved. Moreover, the Li|M-bpyN|LiFePO4 configuration shows a long cycle retention of 350 cycles at 0.5 C. These results indicate that an M-bpyN Li guiding matrix, which enables a uniform Li+ flux by 3D ordered Li+-chelating sites, serve as a suitable host for Li+ and enhance the performance of Li-metal electrodes.

Formation of xenon-nitrogen compounds at high pressure.

Project description:Molecular nitrogen exhibits one of the strongest known interatomic bonds, while xenon possesses a closed-shell electronic structure: a direct consequence of which renders both chemically unreactive. Through a series of optical spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction experiments, we demonstrate the formation of a novel van der Waals compound formed from binary Xe-N2 mixtures at pressures as low as 5 GPa. At 300 K and 5 GPa Xe(N2)2-I is synthesised, and if further compressed, undergoes a transition to a tetragonal Xe(N2)2-II phase at 14 GPa; this phase appears to be unexpectedly stable at least up to 180 GPa even after heating to above 2000 K. Raman spectroscopy measurements indicate a distinct weakening of the intramolecular bond of the nitrogen molecule above 60 GPa, while transmission measurements in the visible and mid-infrared regime suggest the metallisation of the compound at ~100 GPa.

Prediction of novel stable compounds in the Mg-Si-O system under exoplanet pressures.

Project description:The Mg-Si-O system is the major Earth and rocky planet-forming system. Here, through quantum variable-composition evolutionary structure explorations, we have discovered several unexpected stable binary and ternary compounds in the Mg-Si-O system. Besides the well-known SiO2 phases, we have found two extraordinary silicon oxides, SiO3 and SiO, which become stable at pressures above 0.51 TPa and 1.89 TPa, respectively. In the Mg-O system, we have found one new compound, MgO3, which becomes stable at 0.89 TPa. We find that not only the (MgO)x · (SiO2)y compounds, but also two (MgO3)x · (SiO3)y compounds, MgSi3O12 and MgSiO6, have stability fields above 2.41 TPa and 2.95 TPa, respectively. The highly oxidized MgSi3O12 can form in deep mantles of mega-Earths with masses above 20 M⊕ (M⊕:Earth's mass). Furthermore, the dissociation pathways of pPv-MgSiO3 are also clarified, and found to be different at low and high temperatures. The low-temperature pathway is MgSiO3 ⇒ Mg2SiO4 + MgSi2O5 ⇒ SiO2 + Mg2SiO4 ⇒ MgO + SiO2, while the high-temperature pathway is MgSiO3 ⇒ Mg2SiO4 + MgSi2O5 ⇒ MgO + MgSi2O5 ⇒ MgO + SiO2. Present results are relevant for models of the internal structure of giant exoplanets, and for understanding the high-pressure behavior of materials.

All-solid-state lithium-oxygen battery with high safety in wide ambient temperature range.

Project description:There is need to develop high energy storage devices with high safety to satisfy the growing industrial demands. Here, we show the potential to realize such batteries by assembling a lithium-oxygen cell using an inorganic solid electrolyte without any flammable liquid or polymer materials. The lithium-oxygen battery using Li1.575Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 solid electrolyte was examined in the pure oxygen atmosphere from room temperature to 120 °C. The cell works at room temperature and first full discharge capacity of 1420 mAh g(-1) at 10 mA g(-1) (based on the mass of carbon material in the air electrode) was obtained. The charge curve started from 3.0 V, and that the majority of it lay below 4.2 V. The cell also safely works at high temperature over 80 °C with the improved battery performance. Furthermore, fundamental data of the electrochemical performance, such as cyclic voltammogram, cycle performance and rate performance was obtained and this work demonstrated the potential of the all-solid-state lithium-oxygen battery for wide temperature application as a first step.

Synthesis of rare-earth metal compounds through enhanced reactivity of alkali halides at high pressures.

Project description:Chemical stability of the alkali halides NaCl and KCl has allowed for their use as inert media in high-pressure high-temperature experiments. Here we demonstrate the unexpected reactivity of the halides with metals (Y, Dy, and Re) and iron oxide (FeO) in a laser-heated diamond anvil cell, thus providing a synthetic route for halogen-containing binary and ternary compounds. So far unknown chlorides, Y2Cl and DyCl, and chloride carbides, Y2ClC and Dy2ClC, were synthesized at ~40 GPa and 2000 K and their structures were solved and refined using in situ single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Also, FeCl2 with the HP-PdF2-type structure, previously reported at 108 GPa, was synthesized at ~160 GPa and 2100 K. The results of our ab initio calculations fully support experimental findings and reveal the electronic structure and chemical bonding in these compounds.

High-performance artificial nitrogen fixation at ambient conditions using a metal-free electrocatalyst.

Project description:Conversion of naturally abundant nitrogen to ammonia is a key (bio)chemical process to sustain life and represents a major challenge in chemistry and biology. Electrochemical reduction is emerging as a sustainable strategy for artificial nitrogen fixation at ambient conditions by tackling the hydrogen- and energy-intensive operations of the Haber-Bosch process. However, it is severely challenged by nitrogen activation and requires efficient catalysts for the nitrogen reduction reaction. Here we report that a boron carbide nanosheet acts as a metal-free catalyst for high-performance electrochemical nitrogen-to-ammonia fixation at ambient conditions. The catalyst can achieve a high ammonia yield of 26.57 μg h-1 mg-1cat. and a fairly high Faradaic efficiency of 15.95% at -0.75 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, placing it among the most active aqueous-based nitrogen reduction reaction electrocatalysts. Notably, it also shows high electrochemical stability and excellent selectivity. The catalytic mechanism is assessed using density functional theory calculations.
