Gradual edge enhancement in spiral phase contrast imaging with fractional vortex filters.

ABSTRACT: In the spiral phase contrast imaging, the integer spiral phase plate (SPP) are generally employed to perform the radial Hilbert transform on the object. Here we introduce fractional SPP filters, instead of the integer ones, to investigate the gradual formation of edge enhancement for pure phase objects. Two spatial light modulators are used in our experimental configuration. One is addressed to display the pure phase object of a five-pointed star, while the other serves as a dynamic filter of fractional topological charge Q. Of interest is the observation of the complete reversal of the edge and background brightness by gradually changing the fractional vortices from Q = 0 to 1. The experimental results were well interpreted based on the OAM spectra of fractional SPP, which indicates that the filtered output image can be considered as a coherent superposition of all possible images that are individually resulted from the integer OAM filtering. Besides, we show that the spiral phase contrast effect can still be observed in real time for a rotating three-leaf clover. Our results may find potential applications in the optical microscopic imaging.

Project description:AbstractMaximum aortic computed tomography value (CTV) is difficult to control because of variations in cardiac function and patient physique. Therefore, to improve early-phase aortic enhancement on dynamic computed tomography (CT), we developed an estimated cardiac index fractional dose (eciFD). The eciFD protocol is a novel and original protocol for administering fractional dose (FD), representing the amount of iodine per unit body weight per injection duration, based on cardiac index (cardiac output divided by body surface area) as estimated by age in early-phase dynamic CT. At the time of administration, by selecting FD based on the patient's age and selecting a parameter that can achieve this FD, an aortic CTV ≥300 HU (ACTV≥300) can be obtained. This study aimed to investigate aortic enhancement on CT angiography using the eciFD protocol.This retrospective study investigated 291 consecutive patients who underwent dynamic CT from neck to abdomen after recommendation of the eciFD protocol at our institution. We compared early-phase aortic CTV distributions by scan delay between an eciFD group (eciFD applied, n = 135) and a non-eciFD group (eciFD not applied, n = 80). The effect of eciFD on early-phase ACTV≥300 was evaluated using logistic regression analysis adjusted for several potentially meaningful clinical confounders related to aortic CTV, namely male sex, heart rate ≤80 beats/min, estimated glomerular filtration rate ≤40 mL/min, use of eciFD, bolus tracking (BT), history of myocardial infarction, and order from the emergency center.The eciFD protocol was a significant factor for early-phase ACTV≥300 after adjusting for several confounders (odds ratio 3.03; 95% confidence intervals 1.59-5.77; P = .001). No interaction was seen between BT and eciFD protocol (p for interaction = 0.76). In terms of CTV distribution, with both a fixed scan delay time and BT, the eciFD group showed a high aortic CTV. The combination of eciFD protocol with BT provided a particularly high percentage of patients with ACTV≥300 (86.4%).The eciFD protocol was useful for improving aortic contrast enhancement. These findings need to be validated in a randomized controlled study.

Project description:BackgroundCardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) phase contrast is used to quantify blood flow. We sought to develop a complex-difference reconstruction for inline super-resolution of phase-contrast flow (CRISPFlow) to accelerate phase-contrast imaging.MethodsCRISPFlow was built on the super-resolution generative adversarial network. The model was trained and tested (4:1 ratio) using retrospectively identified phase-contrast images from 2020 patients (56 ± 16 years; 1131 men) referred for clinical 3T CMR at a single center from 2018 to 2023. For testing, ascending aortic flow images collected with 2.5 × 1.9 mm2 resolution using generalized autocalibrating partially parallel acquisitions (GRAPPA) were used to synthesize images with 7.5 × 1.9 mm2 resolution. CRISPFlow subsequently restored spatial resolution. In a prospective validation study of 38 participants (57 ± 15 years; 14 men) and 16 healthy individuals (42 ± 16 years; 6 men), CRISPFlow was applied to phase-contrast images collected with 7.5 × 1.9 mm2 resolution with use of GRAPPA and was compared to GRAPPA-accelerated images collected with 2.3 × 1.9 mm2 resolution. A blur metric was used to quantify sharpness. Aortic flow measurements were obtained semi-automatically. Statistical evaluation included analysis of variance, Bland-Altman analysis, and Pearson correlation coefficient (r).ResultsCRISPFlow reconstruction was successful in all cases. CRISPFlow reduced blurring in retrospective (0.35 vs 0.47, P < 0.001) and prospective (0.34 vs 0.48, P < 0.001) images with 7.5 × 1.9 mm2 resolution. Blurring in CRISPFlow images was similar to blurring in images with 2.5 × 1.9 mm2 (0.35 vs 0.35, P = 0.4082) and 2.3 × 1.9 mm2 (0.34 vs 0.32, P < 0.001) resolution. Bland-Altman differences in forward volume (-2 mL [-8 to 3 mL]), regurgitant volume (0 mL [-3 to 2 mL]), and a fraction (0% [-5 to 4%]) showed good agreement between the two techniques in a retrospective cohort. Differences in forward volume (1 mL [-11 to 14 ml]) also showed good agreement in the prospective cohort. There was a strong correlation (all r > 0.90) between GRAPPA and CRISPFlow measurements of flow in both studies.ConclusionWe demonstrated the potential of CRISPFlow to accelerate phase contrast CMR.

Project description:To validate a prospectively triggered spiral phase-contrast magnetic resonance (MR) sequence accelerated with sensitivity encoding (SENSE) in a population of children and adults with congenital heart disease.The local research ethics committee approved this study, and written consent was obtained from all patients or guardians. Stroke volumes were quantified in 40 patients (mean age ± standard deviation: 21.4 years ± 13.8, age range: 3.0-61.3 years; 22 male patients aged 3.0-38.0 years [mean age, 17.2 years ± 10.5], 18 female patients aged 4.7-61.3 years [mean age, 26.6 years ± 15.9]) with congenital heart disease in the aorta (n = 40), main pulmonary artery (n = 38), right pulmonary artery (n = 22), and left pulmonary artery (n = 24). Stroke volumes were obtained with (a) breath-hold spiral phase-contrast MR imaging with SENSE, (b) conventional breath-hold cartesian phase-contrast MR imaging, and (c) reference free-breathing phase-contrast MR imaging. Stroke volumes were compared by using repeated-measures analysis of variance, Bland-Altman analysis, and correlation coefficients.Imaging time with the breath-hold spiral phase-contrast MR sequence was significantly lower than that with the conventional breath-hold phase-contrast MR sequence (~5 seconds vs ~16 seconds, respectively; P < .0001). There was excellent agreement in stroke volumes in all vessels between the reference free-breathing sequence (mean volume, 60.3 mL ± 27.3) and the two breath-hold sequences-spiral SENSE phase-contrast MR imaging (mean volume, 59.5 mL ± 27.1; P < .001) and conventional cartesian phase-contrast MR imaging (mean volume, 59.8 mL ± 27.6; P = .268). The limits of agreement were smaller with the spiral breath-hold sequence than with the conventional breath-hold sequence (-4.4 mL, 2.9 mL vs -10.3 mL, 9.3 mL, respectively); correlation was similar (r = 0.998 vs r = 0.984, respectively).Flow volumes can be accurately and reliably quantified by using a spiral SENSE phase-contrast MR sequence, with high spatiotemporal resolution obtained in a short breath hold.
