Atomic cobalt on nitrogen-doped graphene for hydrogen generation.

ABSTRACT: Reduction of water to hydrogen through electrocatalysis holds great promise for clean energy, but its large-scale application relies on the development of inexpensive and efficient catalysts to replace precious platinum catalysts. Here we report an electrocatalyst for hydrogen generation based on very small amounts of cobalt dispersed as individual atoms on nitrogen-doped graphene. This catalyst is robust and highly active in aqueous media with very low overpotentials (30 mV). A variety of analytical techniques and electrochemical measurements suggest that the catalytically active sites are associated with the metal centres coordinated to nitrogen. This unusual atomic constitution of supported metals is suggestive of a new approach to preparing extremely efficient single-atom catalysts.

Project description:The scalable production of hydrogen could conveniently be realized by alkaline water electrolysis. Currently, the major challenge confronting hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is lacking inexpensive alternatives to platinum-based electrocatalysts. Here we report a high-efficient and stable electrocatalyst composed of ruthenium and cobalt bimetallic nanoalloy encapsulated in nitrogen-doped graphene layers. The catalysts display remarkable performance with low overpotentials of only 28 and 218 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, and excellent stability of 10,000 cycles. Ruthenium is the cheapest platinum-group metal and its amount in the catalyst is only 3.58 wt.%, showing the catalyst high activity at a very competitive price. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the introduction of ruthenium atoms into cobalt core can improve the efficiency of electron transfer from alloy core to graphene shell, beneficial for enhancing carbon-hydrogen bond, thereby lowing ΔGH* of HER.

Solid-state synthesis of few-layer cobalt-doped MoS<sub>2</sub> with CoMoS phase on nitrogen-doped graphene driven by microwave irradiation for hydrogen electrocatalysis.

Project description:The high catalytic activity of cobalt-doped MoS2 (Co-MoS2) observed in several chemical reactions such as hydrogen evolution and hydrodesulfurization, among others, is mainly attributed to the formation of the CoMoS phase, in which Co occupies the edge-sites of MoS2. Unfortunately, its production represents a challenge due to limited cobalt incorporation and considerable segregation into sulfides and sulfates. We, therefore, developed a fast and efficient solid-state microwave irradiation synthesis process suitable for producing thin Co-MoS2 flakes (∼3-8 layers) attached on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide. The CoMoS phase is predominant in samples with up to 15 at% of cobalt, and only a slight segregation into cobalt sulfides/sulfates is noticed at larger Co content. The Co-MoS2 flakes exhibit a large number of defects resulting in wavy sheets with significant variations in interlayer distance. The catalytic performance was investigated by evaluating the activity towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and a gradual improvement with increased amount of Co was observed, reaching a maximum at 15 at% with an overpotential of 197 mV at -10 mA cm-2, and a Tafel slope of 61 mV dec-1. The Co doping had little effect on the HER mechanism, but a reduced onset potential and charge transfer resistance contributed to the improved activity. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of using a rapid microwave irradiation process to produce highly doped Co-MoS2 with predominant CoMoS phase, excellent HER activity, and operational stability.

Approaching Theoretical Performances of Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Peroxide Generation by Cobalt-Nitrogen Moieties.

Project description:Electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has been intensively studied for environmentally benign applications. However, insufficient understanding of ORR 2 e- -pathway mechanism at the atomic level inhibits rational design of catalysts with both high activity and selectivity, causing concerns including catalyst degradation due to Fenton reaction or poor efficiency of H2 O2 electrosynthesis. Herein we show that the generally accepted ORR electrocatalyst design based on a Sabatier volcano plot argument optimises activity but is unable to account for the 2 e- -pathway selectivity. Through electrochemical and operando spectroscopic studies on a series of CoNx /carbon nanotube hybrids, a construction-driven approach based on an extended "dynamic active site saturation" model that aims to create the maximum number of 2 e- ORR sites by directing the secondary ORR electron transfer towards the 2 e- intermediate is proven to be attainable by manipulating O2 hydrogenation kinetics.

Cobalt-modified palladium nanocatalyst on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide for direct hydrazine fuel cell.

Project description:Nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide-supported palladium-cobalt nanoparticles (PdCo NPs/NrGO NSs) are synthesized and used as a high-performance and low-cost anodic catalyst for direct hydrazine-hydrogen peroxide fuel cells. The SEM and TEM images of PdCo NPs/NrGO NSs show the uniform metal nanoparticle distribution on the NrGO NSs. The reduction of the oxygen functional groups and the doping of the nitrogen atoms in the GO framework are confirmed by FT-IR and XRD spectroscopic studies. The Pd catalysts modified by Co exhibit a higher catalytic activity, lower onset potential, better durability, and lower impedance values than unmodified Pd catalysts for the electro-oxidation of hydrazine. The kinetic studies show a first-order reaction with an activation energy of 12.51 kJ mol-1. A direct hydrazine-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell with PdCo NPs/NrGO NSs as anode and Pt/C as cathode provides an open circuit voltage of 1.76 V and a maximum power density of 148.58 mW cm-2 at 60 °C, indicating that the PdCo NPs/NrGO NSs are an economical, high performance and reliable anode catalyst for the direct hydrazine-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell.

Single-atomic cobalt sites embedded in hierarchically ordered porous nitrogen-doped carbon as a superior bifunctional electrocatalyst.

Project description:Exploring efficient and cost-effective catalysts to replace precious metal catalysts, such as Pt, for electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) holds great promise for renewable energy technologies. Herein, we prepare a type of Co catalyst with single-atomic Co sites embedded in hierarchically ordered porous N-doped carbon (Co-SAS/HOPNC) through a facile dual-template cooperative pyrolysis approach. The desirable combination of highly dispersed isolated atomic Co-N4 active sites, large surface area, high porosity, and good conductivity gives rise to an excellent catalytic performance. The catalyst exhibits outstanding performance for ORR in alkaline medium with a half-wave potential (E 1/2) of 0.892 V, which is 53 mV more positive than that of Pt/C, as well as a high tolerance of methanol and great stability. The catalyst also shows a remarkable catalytic performance for HER with distinctly high turnover frequencies of 0.41 and 3.8 s-1 at an overpotential of 100 and 200 mV, respectively, together with a long-term durability in acidic condition. Experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the atomically isolated single Co sites and the structural advantages of the unique 3D hierarchical porous architecture synergistically contribute to the high catalytic activity.

Atomically confined calcium in nitrogen-doped graphene as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for hydrogen evolution.

Project description:Calcium is one of the most abundant and cheapest elements on earth. However, due to the lack of d-orbitals for chemical adsorption, it is generally considered as a stoichiometric reagent with no catalytic activities in heterogeneous catalysis. In this research, we have revealed that atomically confined Ca in nitrogen-doped graphene (Ca1-NG) can be an effective heterogeneous catalyst to boost both electrocatalytic and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). Ca single atoms anchored in NG can efficiently enhance the HER performance due to the improvement of the interfacial charge transfer rate and suppression of the photo-generated charge recombination. Density functional theory calculations show that the high catalytic activity of Ca1-NG results from the Ca single atoms in NG, which leads to multiple H adsorption configurations with favorable ΔGH∗ values for HER. This research can be valuable for the designing of environmentally friendly, economical and efficient catalysts for renewable hydrogen production.

Investigation of the Stability and Hydrogen Evolution Activity of Dual-Atom Catalysts on Nitrogen-Doped Graphene.

Project description:Single atom catalysts (SACs) have received a lot of attention in recent years for their high catalytic activity, selectivity, and atomic utilization rates. Two-dimensional N-doped graphene has been widely used to stabilize transition metal (TM) SACs in many reactions. However, the anchored SAC could lose its activity because of the too strong metal-N interaction. Alternatively, we studied the stability and activity of dual-atom catalysts (DACs) for 24 TMs on N-doped graphene, which kept the dispersion state but had different electronic structures from SACs. Our results show that seven DACs can be formed directly compared to the SACs. The others can form stably when the number of TMs is slightly larger than the number of vacancies. We further show that some of the DACs present better catalytic activities in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) than the corresponding SACs, which can be attributed to the optimal charge transfer that is tuned by the additional atom. After the screening, the DAC of Re is identified as the most promising catalyst for HER. This study provides useful information for designing atomically-dispersed catalysts on N-doped graphene beyond SACs.

A 3D nitrogen-doped graphene aerogel for enhanced visible-light photocatalytic pollutant degradation and hydrogen evolution.

Project description:Three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based aerogels have attracted widespread interest as promising photocatalysts for dye degradation and hydrogen production. Herein, we have developed a 3D nitrogen-doped graphene aerogel (3DNG) from graphitic carbon nitride combined with graphene oxide (GO). The nitrogen dopant in the 3D aerogel was achieved via a thermal treatment at 1000 °C, and the 3D aerogel catalyst could retain its 3D porous structure after the thermal treatment. The 3DNG was characterized via FTIR, Raman, TEM, UV-vis, XPS spectroscopies and BET analysis, and the results indicated that this 3DNG with a large surface area of 536 m2 g-1 and a band gap of 2.42 eV demonstrated a high adsorption capacity and enhanced methylene blue degradation and hydrogen production under visible light irradiation. Characterization also identified that the porous 3D structure with hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions and better charge transfer resulting from the nitrogen doping are the major reasons for the enhanced photocatalytic performance over this 3DNG catalyst.

A Green Synthesis Strategy for Cobalt Phosphide Deposited on N, P Co-Doped Graphene for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution.

Project description:The exploitation of electrocatalysts with high activity and durability for the hydrogen evolution reaction is significant but also challenging for future energy systems. Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have attracted a lot of attention due to their effective activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction, but the complicated preparation of metal phosphides remains a bottleneck. In this study, a green fabrication method is designed and proposed to construct N, P co-doped graphene (NPG)-supported cobalt phosphide (Co2P) nanoparticles by using DNA as both N and P sources. Thanks to the synergistic effect of NPG and Co2P, the Co2P/NPG shows effective activity with a small overpotential of 144 mV and a low Tafel slope of 72 mV dec-1 for the hydrogen evolution reaction. This study describes a successful green synthesis strategy for the preparation of high-performance TMPs.

Micelle-template synthesis of nitrogen-doped mesoporous graphene as an efficient metal-free electrocatalyst for hydrogen production.

Project description:Synthesis of mesoporous graphene materials by soft-template methods remains a great challenge, owing to the poor self-assembly capability of precursors and the severe agglomeration of graphene nanosheets. Herein, a micelle-template strategy to prepare porous graphene materials with controllable mesopores, high specific surface areas and large pore volumes is reported. By fine-tuning the synthesis parameters, the pore sizes of mesoporous graphene can be rationally controlled. Nitrogen heteroatom doping is found to remarkably render electrocatalytic properties towards hydrogen evolution reactions as a highly efficient metal-free catalyst. The synthesis strategy and the demonstration of highly efficient catalytic effect provide benchmarks for preparing well-defined mesoporous graphene materials for energy production applications.
