General synthesis of inorganic single-walled nanotubes.

ABSTRACT: The single-walled nanotube (SWNT) is an interesting nanostructure for fundamental research and potential applications. However, very few inorganic SWNTs are available to date due to the lack of efficient fabrication methods. Here we synthesize four types of SWNT: sulfide; hydroxide; phosphate; and polyoxometalate. Each type of SWNT possesses essentially uniform diameters. Detailed studies illustrate that the formation of SWNTs is initiated by the self-coiling of the corresponding ultrathin nanostructure embryo/building blocks on the base of weak interactions between them, which is not limited to specific compounds or crystal structures. The interactions between building blocks can be modulated by varying the solvents used, thus multi-walled tubes can also be obtained. Our results reveal that the generalized synthesis of inorganic SWNTs can be achieved by the self-coiling of ultrathin building blocks under the proper weak interactions.

Synthesis Route to Single-Walled Zeolite Nanotubes Enabled by Tetrabutylammonium Hydroxide.

Project description:Single-walled zeolite nanotubes (ZNT) were recently synthesized in a narrow compositional window. ZNT structural features-thin zeolitic walls and large mesopores-can allow for easy access of small molecules to zeolite micropores, but they also impart processing limitations for these materials, such as challenges with conventional aqueous ion-exchange conditions. Conventional solid- and liquid-phase ion exchange of calcined NaOH-derived ZNT (NaH-ZNT) results in structural degradation to either 2D sheet-like phases, 3D nanocrystals, or amorphous phases, motivating different direct synthesis routes and unconventional ion-exchange procedures of uncalcined ZNT precursors. Here, a modified synthesis route for ZNT synthesis is introduced that facilitates facile ion exchange as well as incorporation of additional non-Al heteroatoms in the zeolite framework. Tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAOH) is used as a hydroxide source and co-OSDA, enabling synthesis of new compositions of ZNT, otherwise unachievable by post-modification of previously reported NaH-ZNT. By varying the gel composition, synthesis temperature, crystallization time, hydroxide source, silicon source, and aluminum source, productive conditions for the new TBAOH synthesis are developed, leading to increased strong acid site density in the ZNT. The collected results demonstrate the sensitivity of the ZNT synthesis to many key parameters and show that the ZNT forms only when Si/(Al + T) ∼ 30 in these synthesis gels and with specific Si and Al sources, and always in the presence of trace Na+. Catalytic testing, via the tandem CO2 hydrogenation to methanol and methanol to aromatics reaction, shows that ZNTs provide adequate catalytic activity (acidity), relative to their conventional 3D counterparts in converting methanol to aromatic compounds.

Role of Hydrogen in Ethylene-Based Synthesis of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes.

Project description:We examined the effect of hydrogen on the growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes in the aerosol (a specific case of the floating catalyst) chemical vapor deposition process using ethylene as a carbon source and ferrocene as a precursor for a Fe-based catalyst. With a comprehensive set of physical methods (UV-vis-NIR and Raman spectroscopies, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, differential mobility analysis, and four-probe sheet resistance measurements), we showed hydrogen to inhibit ethylene pyrolysis extending the window of synthesis parameters. Moreover, the detailed study at different temperatures allowed us to distinguish three different regimes for the hydrogen effect: pyrolysis suppression at low concentrations (I) followed by surface cleaning/activation promotion (II), and surface blockage/nanotube etching (III) at the highest concentrations. We believe that such a detailed study will help to reveal the complex role of hydrogen and contribute toward the synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes with detailed characteristics.

Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Encapsulated within Metallacycles.

Project description:Mechanically interlocked derivatives of carbon nanotubes (MINTs) are interesting nanotube products since they show high stability without altering the carbon nanotube structure. So far, MINTs have been synthesized using ring-closing metathesis, disulfide exchange reaction, H-bonding or direct threading with macrocycles. Here, we describe the encapsulation of single-walled carbon nanotubes within a palladium-based metallosquare. The formation of MINTs was confirmed by a variety of techniques, including high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. We find the making of these MINTs is remarkably sensitive to structural variations of the metallo-assemblies. When a metallosquare with a cavity of appropriate shape and size is used, the formation of the MINT proceeds successfully by both templated clipping and direct threading. Our studies also show indications on how supramolecular coordination complexes can help expand the potential applications of MINTs.

Sorting centimetre-long single-walled carbon nanotubes.

Project description:While several approaches have been developed for sorting metallic (m) or semiconducting (s) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), the length of SWCNTs is limited within a micrometer, which restricts excellent electrical performances of SWCNTs for macro-scale applications. Here, we demonstrate a simple sorting method of centimetre-long aligned m- and s-SWCNTs. Ni particles were selectively and uniformly coated along the 1-cm-long m-SWCNTs by applying positive gate bias during electrochemical deposition with continuous electrolyte injection. To sort s-SWCNTs, the Ni coating was oxidized to form insulator outer for blocking of current flow through inner m-SWCNTs. Sorting of m-SWCNTs were demonstrated by selective etching of s-SWCNTs via oxygen plasma, while the protected m-SWCNTs by Ni coating remained intact. The series of source-drain pairs were patterned along the 1-cm-long sorted SWCNTs, which confirmed high on/off ratio of 10(4)-10(8) for s-SWCNTs and nearly 1 for m-SWCNTs.

Combinatorial design of molecular seeds for chirality-controlled synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes.

Project description:The chirality-controlled synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is a major challenge facing current nanomaterials science. The surface-assisted bottom-up fabrication from unimolecular CNT seeds (precursors), which unambiguously predefine the chirality of the tube during the growth, appears to be the most promising approach. This strategy opens a venue towards controlled synthesis of CNTs of virtually any possible chirality by applying properly designed precursor molecules. However, synthetic access to the required precursor molecules remains practically unexplored because of their complex structure. Here, we report a general strategy for the synthesis of molecular seeds for the controlled growth of SWCNTs possessing virtually any desired chirality by combinatorial multi-segmental assembly. The suggested combinatorial approach allows facile assembly of complex CNT precursors (with up to 100 carbon atoms immobilized at strictly predefined positions) just in one single step from complementary segments. The feasibility of the approach is demonstrated on the synthesis of the precursor molecules for 21 different SWCNT chiralities utilizing just three relatively simple building blocks.

Single- and double-walled boron nitride nanotubes: Controlled synthesis and application for water purification.

Project description:Research interest in boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) has increased after the recent success of large-scale BNNT syntheses using high-temperature-pressure laser ablation or high-temperature plasma methods. Nonetheless, there are limits to the application and commercialization of these materials because of the difficulties associated with their fine structural control. Herein, the growth kinetics of BNNTs were systemically studied for this purpose. The growth pressure of the nitrogen feed gas was varied while the growth temperature remained constant, which was confirmed by black body radiation measurements and calculations based on a heat loss model. Changing from the diffusion-limited regime to the supply-limited regime of growth kinetics based on the optimized BNNT synthesis condition afforded the control of the number of BNNT walls. The total amount of BNNTs possessing single and double walls was over 70%, and the BNNT surface area increased to 278.2 m2/g corresponding to small wall numbers and diameters. Taking advantage of the large surface area and high-temperature durability of the material, BNNTs utilized as a recyclable adsorbent for water purification. The efficiency of the BNNTs for capturing methylene blue particles in water was approximately 94%, even after three repetition cycles, showing the potential of the material for application in the filter industry.

Single Walled BiI<sub>3</sub> Nanotubes Encapsulated within Carbon Nanotubes.

Project description:Inorganic nanotubes are morphological counterparts of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Yet, only graphene-like BN layer has been readily organized into single walled nanotubes so far. In this study, we present a simple route to obtain inorganic single walled nanotubes - a novel ultrathin morphology for bismuth iodide (BiI3), embedded within CNTs. The synthesis involves the capillary filling of BiI3 into CNT, which acts as a nanotemplate, by annealing the BiI3-CNT mixture above the melting point of BiI3. Aberration corrected scanning/transmission electron microscopy is used in characterizing the novel morphology of BiI3. A critical diameter which enables the formation of BiI3 nanotubes, against BiI3 nanorods is identified. The relative stability of these phases is investigated with the density functional theory calculations. Remarkably, the calculations reveal that the single walled BiI3 nanotubes are semiconductors with a direct band gap, which remain stable even without the host CNTs.

Pillar[5]arene-Decorated Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes.

Project description:Control of single-walled carbon nanotube dispersion properties is of substantial interest to the scientific community. In this work, we sought to investigate the effect of a macrocycle, pillar[5]arene, on the dispersion properties of a polymer-nanotube complex. Pillar[5]arenes are a class of electron-rich macrocyclic hosts capable of forming inclusion complexes with electron-poor guests, such as alkyl nitriles. A hydroxyl-functionalized pillar[5]arene derivative was coupled to the alkyl bromide side chains of a polyfluorene, which was then used to coat the surface of single-walled carbon nanotubes. Noncovalent functionalization of carbon nanotubes with the macrocycle-containing conjugated polymer significantly enhanced nanotube solubility, resulting in dark and concentrated nanotube dispersions (600 μg mL-1), as evidenced by UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Differentiation of semiconducting and metallic single-walled carbon nanotube species was analyzed by a combination of UV-vis-NIR, Raman, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy confirmed that the concentrated nanotube dispersion produced by the macrocycle-containing polymer was due to well-exfoliated nanotubes, rather than bundle formation. The polymer-nanotube dispersion was investigated using 1H NMR spectroscopy, and it was found that host-guest chemistry between pillar[5]arene and 1,6-dicyanohexane occurred in the presence of the polymer-nanotube complex. Utilizing the host-guest capability of pillar[5]arene, the polymer-nanotube complex was incorporated into a supramolecular organogel.

Translocation of single-stranded DNA through single-walled carbon nanotubes.

Project description:We report the fabrication of devices in which one single-walled carbon nanotube spans a barrier between two fluid reservoirs, enabling direct electrical measurement of ion transport through the tube. A fraction of the tubes pass anomalously high ionic currents. Electrophoretic transport of small single-stranded DNA oligomers through these tubes is marked by large transient increases in ion current and was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction analysis. Each current pulse contains about 10(7) charges, an enormous amplification of the translocated charge. Carbon nanotubes simplify the construction of nanopores, permit new types of electrical measurements, and may open avenues for control of DNA translocation.
