ABSTRACT: Cytosines in genomic DNA come in different flavors. A recent paper published in Nature reveals that an oxidized variety, 5-carboxylcytosine, is recognized by the elongating RNA polymerase, shedding light on the role of DNA oxidation in transcription regulation.
