Lipid droplets (LDs) are storage organelles consisting of a neutral lipid core surrounded by a phospholipid monolayer and a set of LD-specific proteins. Most LD components are synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), an organelle that is often physically connected with LDs.
