Ru complexes of Hoveyda-Grubbs type immobilized on lamellar zeolites: activity in olefin metathesis reactions.

ABSTRACT: Hoveyda-Grubbs type catalysts with cationic tags on NHC ligands were linker-free immobilized on the surface of lamellar zeolitic supports (MCM-22, MCM-56, MCM-36) and on mesoporous molecular sieves SBA-15. The activity of prepared hybrid catalysts was tested in olefin metathesis reactions: the activity in ring-closing metathesis of citronellene and N,N-diallyltrifluoroacetamide decreased in the order of support MCM-22 ≈ MCM-56 > SBA-15 > MCM-36; the hybrid catalyst based on SBA-15 was found the most active in self-metathesis of methyl oleate. All catalysts were reusable and exhibited low Ru leaching (<1% of Ru content). XPS analysis revealed that during immobilization ion exchange between Hoveyda-Grubbs type catalyst and zeolitic support occurred in the case of Cl(-) counter anion; in contrast, PF6 (-) counter anion underwent partial decomposition.

Highly efficient Ru(ii)-alkylidene based Hoveyda-Grubbs catalysts for ring-closing metathesis reactions.

Project description:Three novel phosphine-free Ru-alkylidenes (7a-7c) have been synthesized and utilized as efficient catalysts for ring closing metathesis (RCM) reaction. Spectroscopic data, i.e. NMR and HRMS, along with single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, were used to confirm their chemical structures. The tosylated carbenoid 7b showed the highest efficiency in cyclizing different acyclic diene substrates. RCM of various (un)substituted N,N-diallylaniline derivatives and stereoselective RCM of different macromolecular dienes were well tolerated using only a catalytic amount (0.5-2.0 mol%) of the additive catalyst (7b) as compared to the well-known Grubbs (II) and Hoveyda-Grubbs (II) catalysts.

Project description:The novel dicationic metathesis catalyst [(RuCl2(H2ITapMe2)(=CH-2-(2-PrO)-C6H4))(2+) (OTf(-))2] (Ru-2, H2ITapMe2 = 1,3-bis(2',6'-dimethyl-4'-trimethylammoniumphenyl)-4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene, OTf(-) = CF3SO3 (-)) based on a dicationic N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand was prepared. The reactivity was tested in ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) under biphasic conditions using a nonpolar organic solvent (toluene) and the ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [BDMIM(+)][BF4 (-)]. The structure of Ru-2 was confirmed by single crystal X-ray analysis.

Project description:Seven novel Hoveyda-Grubbs precatalysts bearing an aminosulfonyl function are reported. Kinetic studies indicate an activity enhancement compared to Hoveyda's precatalyst. A selection of these catalysts was investigated with various substrates in ring-closing metathesis of dienes or enynes and cross metathesis. The results demonstrate that these catalysts show a good tolerance to various chemical functions.

Olefin Metathesis Catalyzed by a Hoveyda-Grubbs-like Complex Chelated to Bis(2-mercaptoimidazolyl) Methane: A Predictive DFT Study.

Project description:Although highly selective complexes for the cross-metathesis of olefins, particularly oriented toward the productive metathesis of Z-olefins, have been reported in recent years, there is a constant need to design and prepare new and improved catalysts for this challenging reaction. In this work, guided by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the performance of a Ru-based catalyst chelated to a sulfurated pincer in the olefin metathesis was computationally assessed. The catalyst was designed based on the Hoveyda-Grubbs catalyst (SIMes)Cl2Ru(═CH-o-OiPrC6H4) through the substitution of chlorides with the chelator bis(2-mercaptoimidazolyl)methane. The obtained thermodynamic and kinetic data of the initiation phase through side- and bottom-bound mechanisms suggest that this system is a versatile catalyst for olefin metathesis, as DFT predicts the highest energy barrier of the catalytic cycle of ca. 20 kcal/mol, which is comparable to those corresponding to the Hoveyda-Grubbs-type catalysts. Moreover, in terms of the stereoselectivity evaluated through the propagation phase in the metathesis of propene-propene to 2-butene, our study reveals that the Z isomer can be formed under a kinetic control. We believe that this is an interesting outcome in the context of future exploration of Ru-based catalysts with sulfurated chelates in the search for high stereoselectivity in selected reactions.

Z-Selective olefin metathesis reactions promoted by tungsten oxo alkylidene complexes.

Project description:Addition of LiOHMT (OHMT = O-2,6-dimesitylphenoxide) to W(O)(CH-t-Bu)(PMe(2)Ph)(2)Cl(2) led to WO(CH-t-Bu)Cl(OHMT)(PMe(2)Ph) (4). Subsequent addition of Li(2,5-Me(2)C(4)H(2)N) to 4 yielded yellow W(O)(CH-t-Bu)(OHMT)(Me(2)Pyr)(PMe(2)Ph) (5). Compound 5 is a highly effective catalyst for the Z-selective coupling of selected terminal olefins (at 0.2% loading) to give product in >75% yield with >99% Z configuration. Addition of 2 equiv of B(C(6)F(5))(3) to 5 afforded a catalyst activated at the oxo ligand by B(C(6)F(5))(3). 5·B(C(6)F(5))(3) is a highly active catalyst that produces thermodynamic products (~20% Z).

Grubbs and Hoveyda-Type Ruthenium Complexes Bearing a Cyclic Bent-Allene.

Project description:Stable cyclic bent-allene 1 displaces the chelating ether linkage of the Hoveyda-Grubbs-type ruthenium complex 2 bearing triphenylphosphine. The resulting complex 3 features an unusual cis-arrangement of the phosphine and the cyclic bent-allene, while retaining a distorted square pyramidal geometry around the ruthenium center. Monitoring by (31)P NMR spectroscopy the reaction of cyclic bent-allene 1 with the indenylidene bis(triphenylphosphine)ruthenium dichloride complex 4 allowed for the observation of dissociated triphenylphosphine, and the formation of a ruthenium complex featuring 1 and triphenylphosphine in the desired trans-configuration. However, continued reaction times saw the disappearance of this complex, and after workup complex 5 featuring a cis-arrangement was isolated.

Enantioselective olefin metathesis with cyclometalated ruthenium complexes.

Project description:The success of enantioselective olefin metathesis relies on the design of enantioenriched alkylidene complexes capable of transferring stereochemical information from the catalyst structure to the reactants. Cyclometalation of the NHC ligand has proven to be a successful strategy to incorporate stereogenic atoms into the catalyst structure. Enantioenriched complexes incorporating this design element catalyze highly Z- and enantioselective asymmetric ring opening/cross metathesis (AROCM) of norbornenes and cyclobutenes, and the difference in ring strain between these two substrates leads to different propagating species in the catalytic cycle. Asymmetric ring closing metathesis (ARCM) of a challenging class of prochiral trienes has also been achieved. The extent of reversibility and effect of reaction setup was also explored. Finally, promising levels of enantioselectivity in an unprecedented Z-selective asymmetric cross metathesis (ACM) of a prochiral 1,4-diene was demonstrated.

Impact of the Carbene Derivative Charge on the Decomposition Rates of Hoveyda-Grubbs-like Metathesis Catalysts.

Project description:Hoveyda-Grubbs metathesis catalysts undergo a relatively fast decomposition in the presence of olefins. Using a computational density functional theory approach, we show that positively charged derivatives of N-heterocyclic carbenes have little impact on the degradation/deactivation rates of such catalysts with respect to neutral carbenes. On the other hand, the hypothetical anionic Hoveyda-Grubbs-like catalysts are predicted to less likely undergo degradation in the presence of the olefin, while being as active as standard, neutral Hoveyda-Grubbs catalysts.

Catalytic, transannular carbonyl-olefin metathesis reactions.

Project description:Transannular carbonyl-olefin metathesis reactions complement existing procedures for related ring-closing, ring-opening, and intermolecular carbonyl-olefin metathesis. We herein report the development and mechanistic investigation of FeCl3-catalyzed transannular carbonyl-olefin metathesis reactions that proceed via a distinct reaction path compared to previously reported ring-closing and ring-opening protocols. Specifically, carbonyl-ene and carbonyl-olefin metathesis reaction pathways are competing under FeCl3-catalysis to ultimately favor metathesis as the thermodynamic product. Importantly, we show that distinct Lewis acid catalysts are able to distinguish between these pathways to enable the selective formation of either transannular carbonyl-ene or carbonyl-olefin metathesis products. These insights are expected to enable further advances in catalyst design to efficiently differentiate between these two competing reaction paths of carbonyl and olefin functionalities to further expand the synthetic generality of carbonyl-olefin metathesis.
